I was SOOOO excited when I saw this. Then I saw that it's coming in December, and for a second thought "Oh fuck! It's December now! Maybe it's out next week and I missed it?" Then I realized it's Dec. 2012 and got sad...
Looks pretty nice! I thought this was going to be in 2 parts. It is right? There were no hints of the dragon there and most of it looked like it could have been from the first half of the book...
woooooooots! i am soooo glad to see the dwarves sing i love the poem songs in the book. The Hobbit rules them all. Way better than pansy frodo and his "adventures" with the ring. Bilbo is the hobbit!
I'm expecting this to either be absolutely amazing or god awful. I have faith in Peter Jackson as hes playing on home turf so no reason to screw it up. I think anyone expecting this to be the same as LOTR will be let down as the hobbit was never on the same level of EPIC as LOTR. This will be an altogether different kind of story, though it will be awesome. I wanna see how they do Smaug!
I gotta read this right now!
after watching the lotr movies over and over I think fellowship is my favorite, its more of an adventure/quest/trek across epic landscapes. the huge battles of the other 2 are cool but the more intimate, smaller scope of the fellowship is really charming. It looks like the hobbit will have some of that flavor and im so stoked.
Pior, I believe you'll only see 48fps when its in 3D. So trailers will only be 24. Same with the released 2d version, assuming they release it in 2d as well, which they probably will, if the trailers are.

Depends what they set the refresh rate of the projector to.
Woah! That would suck if that's the case. I actually think that high fps is the true movie revolution that 3d never was ... I sure hope to be able to see the movie in 2D@48fps! Wait and see ...
It's just that 2D movies for the most part still come on film, and film projectors go at 24fps as far as I know. Unless they come up with a special projector that can revolve at 48fps, which would mean special film too that wouldn't break at those speeds I would imagine, then it's probably not going to happen.
Unless everything switches to digital projectors. Which I suspect it probably will at some point. But for right now, it's all at 24fps because of the film projectors.
So for Hobbit, maybe when it comes out on blu-ray it'll be at 48fps. Which I also kinda doubt, because even when you buy the Blu-Ray (extended) for LOTR, each movies comes on 2 blu-ray discs because of the file sizes. So... HD at 48fps would probably be more than what can fit on a blu-ray. Especially for extended editions and whatnot (Return of the King is 4.5 hours running time, not including extra content).
Edit:
Oh, I guess it's also possible for some theatres that have the movie in 3D@48fps with a digital projector, to run the movie and just disable 3D. Never heard of a theatre doing this, but I'm sure it's possible. I know some guys around here that run a theatre, so maybe I can get a special screening going at some point.
Really ? I thought they had that weird sharper look because of a faster aperture than regular film cameras (meaning less motion blur)...
As for 48fps file sizes being too large, I don't think that's the case - even 3D blurays don't take much more space than regular blurays, because of the huge similarities between the left and right images ...
The whole thing about motion blur and what not. Even if they get rid of motion blur, its in 3d, and alot of 3d tends to have alot of blur. usually when things get close to the camera. I hope they dont have obvious "we did this shot purely for the 3d aspect". I haaaate that. When you are watching a 2d movie and can fully tell what was suppose to be 3d.

The Odeon in Brighton in the UK is 100% digital projectors, they have a advert before the film saying so, so I wouldn't be surprised if most larger cinemas are switching over to 100% digital. Makes you wonder how they can charge 2quid extra for 3d films, if everything is shown digitally it can't make it more expensive to show a 3d film?

no, but it costs more to FILM the 3d movies, as they require special cameras. Double the frames to edit and add special effects to, as 3d cameras film 2 pictures at one time. In the Hobbits case, they are filming at 48 frames a second. Thats already double the frames to edit in most movies. 3d, they need to edit 72 more frames a second, than the typical 2d movie. Not to mention the 3d glasses you get at the theater. Yes, most people recycle them, but some people break them or steal them. Then they still have to clean and repackage them.

They charge a quid for the glasses ontop of the 2quid extra for the 3d! Im not sure I buy editing them adds to the cost, its not as if special effects are hand painted frame by frame! I wonder if the 3d print costs more for the cinema to hire than the 2d? Probably does. Any way this is well off topic and the trailer looked ace!
What do you mean? I thought it comes out at the end of 2013?
Edit:
Oh wtf... I just realized there will be two parts.. And the first one comes out this year! Awesome... and on the day I got tickets to Iron Maiden. This is turning out to be a great day so far.

I gotta read this right now!
The Hobbit was always my favorite of the Tolkien books when I was a kid.
Do you have the source to that statement ?
