I love those production videos! so much i learn about the movie vision, production, and how badass all the art and prosthetic and sets and everything is. Super hyped to watch this movie.
Any time they make these sorts of changes in the middle/end of shooting, it turns to shit. If the director had such a poor plan/idea of the storyflow of his movie that he can just split it into 3 films on a whim, then it's gonna suck. I mean, generally if you have a story idea, you should know where the different acts are, where the climax is, etc. These sorts of things aren't changeable. You don't play it by ear.
In all the vidoes they've posted, they always talk about filming part two. So much question is... were the 2 movies just going to be too long, so they snipped it up even more, so they are making three 2 hour movies as opposed to two 3 hour movies? Or are they writing more into it to expand on the story?
I mean, arent these sort of things generally story boarded out pretty heavily
They cut so much footage from the first 3 movies, I'm sure you could edit it into 4 working movies. I'm sure they had a list of scenes they wanted, but there is too much they want to keep, they decided to make 3 movies work. I'm all for it.

Just because they had enough footage to make a 4th movie, doesn't mean it would have been a good film. Your standard movie has three acts. I doubt they cut three entire acts.
That's fine. When all is said and done I'd rather have those than not. It would suck waiting 3 years to see it all. But after that... man... I'll never be short on LOTR stuff to watch.

assuming you actually WANT to watch it.
I mean, obviously I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know how good they'll be, but come on. He's working with what like... 80 pages per movie?
Previous 3 were great. Why wouldn't these ones be?
And if I don't want to watch it then the whole thing is moot. If it's 2 or 3, doesn't matter if they suck. I'll just move on with my life.
The previous 3 were based on 3 great books. Would the previous three have still been great if PJ decided to make it 9 movies long? I sincerely doubt it.

Lotr was a single book cut into 3 parts because of publisher... Also he is including the tie-in material between Lotr and Hobbit in the Hobbit trilogy.
I think the 3 movie approach is fine. I mean last time around they cut sooo much from the books it was sort of depressing. Like tom bombadil was an amazing character only to be cut. So perhaps this time around they are sitting on a lot of gold footage that needs the 3 movie treatment.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out though. LOTR was a fantastic trilogy, I think. Minus the 12 endings at the end of the 3rd. But, I loved the whole thing.
Now, I've never been one to compare the books to movies, since, well, I never read the books. But, It makes me very curious to see how people will react to this one. Since everyone always bitches they cut stuff from the book, turning 1 book into 3 movies can potentially cut very little from the book
Well, Jackson doesn't have to rely on single novel only, don't forget Tolkien has written a lot about his world and characters populating it, and the Hobbit references them quite often.
Personaly I'd be glad if Jackson spices up classic "hero's journey" formula a little bit and explores middle earth and it's characters thoroughly, including sub-stories of other heroes besides Bilbo Baggins.
It's been a while since I read the hobbit but there did seem to be a bunch of epic stuff going on in the background that got sort of mentioned off hand - correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Necromancer getting defeated only sort of get mentioned in passing?
just saw the movie, wow just wow
seriously this is why i want to be a 3d character artist, the life and personality they managed to get into those cgi creatures is just astounding.

just on all levels a great movie
Does it feel drawn out? There's an awful lot of time to fill stretching 1 book across three presumbly quite long movies.
Also, how's the 48 frames per second malarkey look?

curious too. I hope that's not keeping it from coming into the cinemas here though. I'd hate (no actually I wouldn't really mind. HK rocks) to fly to Hong Kong just to watch this in the cinema.

I havnt read the book so i cant compare the movie to it, but my friend said the entire vibe was spot on comparing it to the book.
I had to look up the playtime to figure out how long the movie was just now, it didnt feel stretched at all.
Also the 48 seemed to work for me, in the beginning i had the feeling things where sped up but after a minute that feeling was gone. Also the 3d was the best ive seen so far , but i only saw avatar and tin tin in 3d so not much to compare to

Calling it now, this trilogy will be shit.

I'll bet the third movie is all epilogue.

I'm pretty fine either way as PJ has yet to let me down.

Agreed. To be honest this doesn't look like a good movie plot wise. There's not even a dragon in it.
I think the trailer was awesome. More Middle Earth always equals awesome. Deal with it.
The Hobbit was a good story. 1/3 of the Hobbit is just 1/3 of a good story

Looking forward to It.
just give us Tom Bombadil!

I think it might be faster to read the entire book than watching all 3 movies

They're adding a lot of parts in from the appendices of LOTR too.

Heard some people saying it felt drawn out and took too long to get going but I didn't feel that was the case. Can definitely recommend it
