I'm doing an anatomy study for a module at university and I've chosen to do an exaggerated male character

That's him so far, I was hoping to get a bit of criticism on my sculpt so far and also some advice on adding more detail to the muscles.

I dunno how much stylization you're going for, but the deltoid and shape of the calves need some love, also more latissimus dorsi.

Thanks, yeah it is meant to be quite stylized but as it is a study of anatomy I've got to show off some knowledge of muscles groupings so I'll try and work on those muscles in particular.

Forgot to mention that this is my first sculpt so if anyone has any tips on particular brushes to use or any materials which are good to work with it'd be much appreciated.

I use gray materials from undoz when sculpting. For brushes, a mix of clay tubes / flatten / pinch / smooth & a custom one for cutting some details. I would probably use a bunch of new ones if i was using Zb4 tho. Find what works best for you.

I've been working on some detailing on the face, adding pores and the like.

I've also made some changes to the rest of him and played with a bit of poly paint

You shouldn't be adding such fine details like pores yet, you don't have any medium details yet.

I ended up straying quite a lot from my 2D concept, the main reason for this was because, as this is for a university module and i had a specific deadline, i was keen to race ahead, my concept ended up not really being up to standard however i was so far down the line that i couldn't afford to start again. I'll have a look for it and post it after this.

Yeah i see your point, sadly, as i said before, this is for a uni project and even though i can look back over this and point out mistakes i've made the hand in is in a week and i don't really have time to change it :P

The concept behind my character is that he is sort of 'owned' by an underground fight club, for that reason the owners have branded him with their mark, i've tired to add that here and also some other scars

Your characters calves are bulging out in the wrong place.
They should buldge in the opposite direction, though the curve you made on the outside of the leg does look okay. A little less radical would contribute to its believability.

Normally the inside split (meaning the one on the inside of the leg) of the Gastrocnemius muscle grows bigger than the other split.

Example.

As for the lower arm, it seems to be twisted downwards. The bulge on top is too exaggerated.

Either decrease the size of the Brachoradialis or increase the size of the muscles on the other side of the arm. And maybe bend it back a little.

Example.

Apart from that, your sculpt is looking great, though try to keep a low level on the detail. You can add that later. Just focus on getting the proportions right, assuming that is what your grade will be based upon.

I'm not sure if I'm too late with this (in your progress), but the calve is wrong. The Gastrocnemius muscle splits into two muscles just below the center of the lower leg. Yours doesn't seem to split at all.

The inside muscle always grows a little bit bigger than the outer one.

It comes down to that your lower leg bulges too far outwards to the sides and doesn't bulge inwards enough.

If you're still up to editing some general parts, I'd change the angle of the lower arm.
It looks a bit exaggerated from the rest. Like as it's at an angle compared to the rest.

I think you over amplified the Brachioradialis muscle and didn't bulge the extensors of the fore-arm enough. If you are going to sculpt a model, sculpt all of their muscles into the style you want them to be, anything too prominent will probably be ignored.

Apart from that. I enjoyed your model.

Thanks again, yeah i'm not too keen to do much more to the sculpt as i've got to retop and texture it in a week and i've got three other modules to think about to include modelling the interior of a church, doing a matte painting and doing a 2d rendering of a plane but if you think little things like that will help i'll gie them a go.

The area around the crotch is really messy and i'll be changing that but i'm doing my retop in 3d coat and then the normal mapping in 3ds max so i didn't want to change it inside max

your quads are still wrong anatomically mate, the rectus femoris (middle muscle) ends a fair bit before the vastus medialis (right side in pic) and is normally much more defined and bulked then the rectus also the same with vastus lateralis.

The deltoid (shoulder) is off as well but you're better of looking up some anatomical pictures and checking out the muscle connections and superficial details of a lot of the muscles. Same with the lats, with a guy that muscled you should generally see the lats since they make the V shape of the torso from the shoulders.

I dunno if you were going for high accuracy anatomy but that's what the title implied to me (i know you've exaggerated features), anyway hoped that helps some.

I'm not 100% sure what you're saying toxic? that my model looks similar to the heavy's head or that i should aim to make it more similar? in any case that isn't the most updated picture of the face but thanks for the feedback anyway

Nice model Liam, but if you are going to continue it over the summer I would focus on improving the muscle definition in the forearms, and maby add some finer details such as veins

I've started the diffuse in poly paint, at the moment I'm just blocking in the shading and tones and when i feel like I've done that to the best of my ability I'll use zapp link to add detail. What do people think of this workflow? If it seems wrong to you let me know as this'll be the first character texture i do!

but I think i see your point, all the crits I've got since finalising the model will be noted and taken into account on the next project (or would people advise redoing this one at least from the sculpt? to be honest i'm pretty excited about starting a new project so might just keep these errors in and make sure i remember them)

I'm trying to project my polypaint information from my high poly sculpt to my retopologised model and when i hit project all this happens

Can anyone help me with this? would be great to get a quick reply if possible as i'd like to have it done tonight

you shuldnt try projecting the polypaint through zbrush, give the high poly some guv tiles while its on its lowest subdiv, select texture from polypaint, export the polypaint and the highpoly, then in xnormal import the high poly and "base texture to bake" then select base texture in the baking options. And done

Theyre automated UV tiles that zbrush gives you're model, they should be under the UV toolbar if i recall correctly, you should only use them for the high poly model though. Be sure you flip the polypainted texture vertically as well

Really digging this model come a long way from the start. One thing i was going to ask on the DA; whats the reasoning behind not modelling in the toes (unless youve changed it recently)? They dont need that many tris and im sure it would look better.

it was mainly a bad choice that i didn't decide to rectify untill it was too late but is something i will discuss in my report and consider next time i do a character.

having some problems following that tutorial, when i generate this comes out

what i'm expecting is something that follows this uv map (example from my normal map using 3dsmax and the same high and low poly models)

I think i've figured it out, didn't realise xnormal had a 3d viewer, when i went into that the two models were in completly different positions! haha well now i know what the problem is and as i don't believe you can move the models inside of xnormal (correct me if i'm wrong) i'm going to try and re align the pivots in 3ds max
