I'm seriously considering to stop visiting polycount for a while because of this don't wont to risk getting a virus that mess up the comp. Cant something be done to stop this?
Yeah this is getting a bit crazy now. Not only is almost every new topic spam, but also many of the replies. Sooner or later my comp will catch a nasty virus from some link in here.
I switched things over lastnight to needing moderation per first-post here on Polycount. This should eventually bring spamming to 0. In the mean time, if it happens, it will be from spam accounts that hadn't posted yet and made it in before this was implemented.

not that likely, the spambots are just trying to bump up the page rank of whatever sites they link in their posts, for example: a spambot makes a thousand posts all over the internet talking about handbags that all link back to the same website, the next time someone searches for handbags, that site has a better chance of showing up on the first page of the search.

Thanks sir Adam. Hopefully it'll resolve spamming issues on PC, reduce the amount of hassle for you and for other mods / editors / etc of PC and it'll save most of us from getting keylogged.
A little suggestion though, had a look at the members list, and there is a LOT of account which has 0 posts, how about a little clean up and delete all those accounts? Especially if they are older then a week, why make an account and not post anything? This way we got (if the approve system works) a clear slate to work with.
There might be legit accounts for private messages. Maybe make sure they aren't sending or receiving PMs. It would suck for someone to be PMing about a job and have their account deleted.

If not done, do this. but based on actually logging in for first time versus 0 posts. It will clean up sooooo much. I have done it on forum I admin. Helps tremendously as I can then see from whats left the new users for the day who actually did something.
EDIT:
Added where you do it and how in Admin panel. Second screen shows all those bots caught for JUST that day using this.

Great work guys. Really excellent jo-Jesus christ Fullsync's avatar just blinked and i shat myself.
Could you not filter out key spam phrases? Or the sites there coming from the most? So the cleaning casstte site ect, just ban the use of the www.cleaning*whatever* .com from posts.

Dumping this here because it seems to be the most recent spam-oriented thread.
I came upon something that felt like spam in the Pixel Art thread, looked at the profile and saw it made a bunch more generic comments, and it linked to what I presume is a porn site.

Thanks! if anyone sees anything fishy, please report it, Polycount spam control is all handled by humans right now and sometimes things fall between the cracks.
update: I banned all of the accounts, thanks for the link
I'm leaning toward the latter. He asked for a copy of Creator (presumably to crack it since it's not publicly available) and, in exchange, promised to "teach you how to use Creator". Which is all the more amusing considering I work with it on a daily basis.

First post approval is looking more appealing every day
We could probably use a few more moderators in other time zones so that the forum doesn't get dogpiled when the Yanks go to bed.
You seriously click every link in every thread?
No.
Also. Great news Adam
That's good news. Nice one, man.
Another spammy thread. ~_~

report it instead of posting it here, If I wasn't reading this thread I wouldn't have been alerted to it.

probably a bunch of spam accounts are registered and dormant, to be used later. much like the tripods in war of the worlds.
Not very likely, as this one tonight:

Account was created today.
EDIT: And another one just after I posted this:

New users are placed in to a usergroup (Registered Users) by default of vBulletin.
I have set this Usergroup to say that all posts by users in this group have to be moderated before being public. It seems that isn't happening...
Still not sure how it's happening.
