This is my suggestion for sticky thread. In a nutshell it's a thread were you can ask questions that boggles your mind without having to start new thread just for it. And of course if you can't find results with search. Examples:
Case 1
Polycount-Joe69 wants to know the optimal texel density for his ogre character, he doesn't find anything with search and starting new thread for such a simple question would be silly. What does he do? He askes it here!
Case 2
ShaderSusan666 wants to know suggestions for awesome websites for ordering texturing dvd's and books. Here's the place to ask!
What do you think? Is the title good?
Replies
Yeah but you can't find ready answers to all questions here. Or even from the almighty google.
Also, what's wrong with making new threads? It's not like it's a hardship or something.
In a long run it would save the forum from a tons of needless threads. It wouldn't be hardship either.
I was only trying to help.
edit:
And if someone lazy/beginner doesn't use search, i would consider it a better thing that he would post his "how to make normal map" question here than in a new thread..
But i guess this isn't really needed here so this thread can be deleted. I had to try thou!
same here, was in a forum that had this kinda thread. it was a good thing, kept some order in a way. i mean, its really annoying having a whole thread just to ask "what's the button to do (insert stupid command here)?"
i vote for yes.
if you're asking for help on polycount about what a certain button does without actually trying to figure it out for yourself, you're going to get cat image replies for asking a dumb question.
anyways, I vote no. what forums are you talking about where this actually works well?
Technical Talk is pretty much just that,
how do I do...
whats the best way to...
This isn't working...
Is there a better way to do...
General Discussion is more about general chatter about the industry and interesting bits of whatever.
For something so broad as what polycount covers it might be pretty hard to wrangle. Also people might just ignore the thread and not check it. How many people are going to build into their routine to "check the misc thread" when the title never changes? Most of the time I'll only click on a thread if I know from the title I can contribute in some way. If it never changes... I'll likely ignore it.
I mean, I started a thread the other day, went to the trouble of doing a few searches first, found nothing and then the first poster says "this has been done several times" *rolls eyes* all those other threads were totally out of date from like 2010 where polling information would have changed. That kind of thing just annoys me, its like just live with the new thread lol
I saw them doing that on a cooking show, I totally want a meat grinder with sausage attachment on it now!
I make my own beer and I plan on trying to make my own soap, cheese & pickles soon.
How to make demo reel? I have seen on demo reels, that i have no idea how to do.
Let's say i have three models, how that models to put in one video? Like, showing a first model, rendering the wireframe, and after that to come the second and third. Should i do this in Nuke? And how?
if you aren't an animator you have no real need for a demo reel.
Finland's biggest non-commercial music forum/site: muusikoiden.net
You could. Just pop in every now and then and see if there's something in the latest posts that you could help with. That's how it worked.
It wouldn't even need to be like nobody shouldn't start new threads for questions, but this could serve as a optional place for those who woudn't want to start a new thread but would like to ask some small/dumb question..
Edit: Your right Mark, this could work better in the Technical Talk area..
You'll smell wonderful I'm sure!
Already tried a Technical Talk Q&A Thread, it didn't stick. Search for threads started by me if interested in it.
That is a -really- weird scent for soap. Why not go with fresh cut grass, baked bread, or fresh-baked grass?
Good examples of this is are the Unreal Engine 3 - MASTER THREAD and the Unreal Developer Kit - MASTER THREAD. Try searching those behemoths for something specific... it takes forever.
Individual threads are better for finding info in the future.
ps, can someone tell me why in america streaky bacon is popular but in the uk (and canada I think?) back bacon is more prevalent? I think back bacon is much nicer
i talk to canadians on the regular and most of them were puzzled as to what "canadian bacon" was when i told them. most of them think back bacon is nasty so i have no idea how the "canadian bacon" thing got started in america
When served plain and fried back bacon is just plain better - more better quality meat. I use streaky bacon for wrapping things, candying, or suchlike.
I know we can buy streaky bacon but if I got it in a fry up I'd be pretty unhappy
AND some communities inside orkut (a really big social network, at least in a couple countries).
Streaky bacon is pancetta, yeah? That's usually considerably more expensive than your common or garden variety middle bacon that you'd get on a big breakfast plate.
mmmm ham
"ASK BACON QUESTIONS HERE - not in a new thread"?
carmine, gears of war 3.
nope, pancetta is a cured bacon, which you could eat without cooking if you like that sort of thing.
the americans like streaky cos you can basically crisp the hell out of it so it no longer resembles meat of any sort. I like it cos you can fry it half crispy half soft, which is what you want for sandwiches.
Oh, and if you lattice it over a chicken or turkey or something, you can make a perfect streaky bacon helmet, as i created, wore and then ate at christmas.
no. Stop getting pork wrong.
Ham for the record, is a cut from the thigh of the hind leg
It should be noted then that 'Canadian bacon' is *not what I was initially talking about. I had heard back bacon was more popular in Canada, but I have no idea about that smoked pork loin
I am wondering if it possible to create an ingame effect seen arround this creature (smokey fx).
I have my monster designed in 3d but now I want it to have this kind off realtime "particle FX/animation". What are my options and is it even possible ? I am using the CryEngine 3 which has it's own particle editor but im not even sure if a particle editor is what I need =P
Anyone have good references of women eating bacon based food creations while laughing? It's for a portfolio piece I'm trying to do.
Something like this:
You could look at combination of animated textures/decals and particles..?
http://freesdk.crydev.net/display/SDKDOC3/Naming+Animated+Textures
MisterSande - I think you'd be best off with a heavily animated mesh like walreu said, with heavy alpha use on the main 'skin' and then some extra 'bone' meshes on the inside to make it more volumetric/layered. And for the trails, model something like scarves and put some animated alpha-splats on there.

Pangahas - Yes bake the parts separately, and then supplement the 'joints' with a handpainted, guesstimated average shadow color. Kind of how traditional quake 3 models have their shadows painted in, in between the legs and in the armpit etc. It's probably also a good idea to dial back the AO strength a bit for other parts so it's less obvious if the AO is incorrect in some poses.

What's green and smells of pork?
Kermit the frog's finger.
^ The end result is this.... A pork tenderloin wrapped in a bacon weave...
All regular bacon in the US is infused with hickory smoked goodness. Here, thick sliced ham is a dinner food, so having it for breakfast is as alien as fish or beans.
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
