Tried to organize ALL the jobs posted in this thread to make it easier for those hit by these lay-offs. The response has been amazing and shouldn't be lost in the six pages of love. I hope nobody minds me tightening up their quotes.
Wow, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone posting in here, this is amazing... it's really great to see the community reaching out like this. It is greatly appreciated from people like me
Chris nice job on the list. We really should keep a list like this rotating. It would be a bit of work but could be done. It would be a fantastic asset for our community members. To have a know of all the jobs currently open and what not...
POLYCOUNT ROOLS. Almost brought a tear to my eye all the massive support from various artists spread over the world.
Seriously, good work guys. And to the Vigil folk I wish you the best of luck and I know you guys will land something awesome and get to work with more amazing people (HOPEFULLY ME ONE DAY SOMEWHERE ((i know im not an amazing artist but I am a good friend)) )
Dang, I'm a long time fan of Relic games and I really liked Darksiders, sorry to hear this. Not much in the way of art jobs here but hiring programmer types. http://bigpoint.net/careers/
Question: Was it primarily the artists/production staff that were laid off? No management losses? IF that's the case, how come they get to keep their jobs? (Sincerely want to hear what makes a manager of failed project valuable enough to keep as opposed to the actual content creators. No sarcasm.)
If a whole bunch of studios are under the umbrella of a single publisher, can't that publisher repurpose the actual content creators by simply making them produce art/design for one of its other, non-shuttered projects instead?

That does happen a lot of times. If a studio is closed, often times recruiters from other studios within that publisher will show up and they'll try to move them. THQ isn't doing so well, though, so I don't know if that's an option.
To add another job to the listing, the school I've been teaching at for the past 2 years(IADT Online) is probably looking to hire some more instructors(maya, udk, etc) soon. It's something that can be done from home, so it may work well for some people.
Man, I'm so sad to hear about this. Vigil had such an incredible density of talent. Best of luck on the hunt to everyone, though based on this turnout on PC, seems you may not need it
Good luck everyone with landing on your feet. I know there are a lot of good artists at those studios who should be able to get something new soon. Be positive!

Sleep in! Stay up late!

I still don't get why laying off significant stock raises stock prices.
Don't shareholders know the product will suffer? And a suffering product leads to lagging sales?
This hasn't affected THQ's stock price at all significantly, although last I checked it was 59c the day of the layoffs and it's 54c at the moment.
It has been bouncing around between 50-60c for about 2 months and has been below since the uDraw announcement in December or whenever that was and has not moved much since:
It is sad when people are let go but I wanted to let everyone know about opportunities at Kin Valley, kinvalley.com. We are hiring designer and Flash developers. Send resumes to careers(at)kinvalley.com or contact me.
So I hear the contractors that lost their jobs at Vigil aren't allowed to be at the job fair?
what's up with that?
Hey how can it be a jobs fair if it isn't being fair?
That does seem odd. I would think their contributions are just as valid to the game and team as us full time employee's were.

How about hosting a virtual one here and make some noise about it to bring people over who might not have seen what's going on here?
Between Relic, Vigil, Zipper and all the others makes a ton of qualified people. Judging by the number of we're hiring posts in this thread it sounds like they should all be able to find work.
Maybe one of the mods can make a sticky, have people post a representative piece & some info and links. The community will make sure it gets to the right people where there's hiring going on.

Kind of like the Job census thread but the other way around.

While this is a nice sentiment there is a "paid jobs" section in polycount. I don't know if you need a new sticky to fill the same function.
As a follow up, what was the result of the career fair on the 5th? Did anyone get a contract?
They had a career fair for the Relic people on the 10th. I was contacted by one company but nothing has come of it so far. The woman from Piranha Games was very nice but they can afford to be choosy. In fact all of them can afford to be that way in an employer's market, that is on top of the tendency of video game companies to slowly weigh things out. The only problem is that animation houses and such will snap you up for a song while the video game companies are making up their mind, even if they are seriously thinking about hiring you. I personally can't wait for them considering the cost of living in the Vancouver area and the fear of being unemployed...
I guess just because they had a job fair for us doesn't mean it's only the people who were laid off that are applying for these open positions.. there's a lot of competition out there, even amongst ourselves now. I mean, it's cool that they did that, and I'm sure it helped out some people, but definitely not all. I'm glad to hear they had one for Relic as well as Vigil at least.
I'm not sure how long it typically takes people to get back to you, gotta admit though, it's not really fun to find that out when you're facing unemployment- like theconceptartist said.

Also agree with Jesse there needs to be like a Sticky or something, for available jobs.
There's an entire section for current paid and unpaid jobs...it's pretty current.

THQ is in biiig trouble. Me thinks they can't pay for the stock. Some podcasters (Giant Bomb) speculate they may not even exist (THQ) next year.

Possibly legal reasons around keeping contractors separate from employees?
Independent contractors are hired for a project and if they have a quasi-permanent relationship they could be considered employees.
