I just sort of textured him as Caucasian I guess. It is an interesting thought given the source material for him. I can run back in and tweak his diffuse. And thanks for the advice on the painting, I'm really going to try to work on my skills there aswell
These are a tad old but I stumbled upon them and felt they were sketchbook worthy. I had a project management class where I worked with some talented individuals to produce a game idea and a mock trailer.
I came up with an Idea that was essentially pokemon meets silent hill, where you play as an inmate in an internment camp setting.
The monsters you fought with were based off rorshach ink blots and represented some psychological condition. The other artists in the group really did some awesome work but these are two initial concepts I did.
I'll have some cool, new stuff posted after finals are done
I keep seeing so much awesome on this site, I got to fight my laziness and aspire. Here's a very merry art dump a little late for Christmas.
a little life painting took 20 min
some progress on Olgren! the undead warrior brought back to like by the mage skrealing (backstory lol)
just a 30 min sculpt doodle
and lastly, I am working up the courage to post in the WAYWO and the pimping and previews thread. I am going to try and tackle my warrior again. Just a Zbrush block out so far with my base mesh and everything. Progress soon hopefully!
As always crits are very much appreciated! God bless you guys and happy holidays : )
Gil i didn't notice till now how much work you have done and how persistent you are and i'm honestly impressed. The improvement is allot and if everybody had a good attitude like you there would be many more good 3D artists around so keep at it !
thanks Oranghe! That means a lot, and is definitely a great motivator. I owe any improvement I've made to this site! I'll be posting more again soon I just have to finish some textures and stuff. But thanks lol
Man, the design on this guy is boss, but I can't help feeling that he still looks plastic. All of your forms are there on the surface but it feels like the muscle structure doesn't go deep enough. A lot of your noise looks a bit disorganized as well. I think you'd do better having cleaner details than just adding noise to everything. That helmet is tight though. Keep it up man, I'd really like to see you push some really nice anatomy sculpts in the future.
Yeah I really got to focus on anatomy, and I am really bad at doing that. You are right I have to settle the noise down a bit and refine the textures, Thanks max!
Yeah, you better finish it. Haha!
It's inspiring to look at the earlier stuff, then the recent stuff... Pretty cool progress.
Keep on looking and practicing that anatomy! It's paying off. I think for some of the 3D models, the amount of noise is kind of distracting (the skull and the lizard man). Look at some designs of the good monster designs (Alien was the first to jump to my mind). Even though there's crazy awesome noise and detail, there are areas of rest that help us take the character in and they complement the design.
I'm looking forward to new 2D stuff, especially with that illustration class coming up! Keep going buddy!
for your paintings try to shift your hues when you go darker with colors. what i usually do is also saturate my shadows some more. also stay away from black when you shade, it gives a muddy feel to colors.
for the 3d part, i like the latest character you're working on designwise and the clothparts so far but i would try to get more reference on the anatomy parts. The muscles feel like masses that are slapped on the base. You should dig in your model and not be afraid to push some things around. Also for the face try to define a skull and don't think in straight lines but in curves that flow into eachother. each element has a certain volume that should be evaluated form all angles. The best way to do this is have a lot of reference .
I hope you don't mind the harder crits but from personal experience it helps the most
gj and keep it up
I really appreciate it man, the advice is is much needed, especially the harder crits. But did you confuse me with gilesRuscoe lol? But Really though I appreciate the critique, I'll define the muscles and the forms in the model, and I have an illustration class this semester so I will be practicing my 2d more!
Hey man! You have some pretty sweet stuff going on, I'd love to see how much further you've got with the warrior. His armour has nice variety. How far you planning to take him? Let's see some more
definitely planning on finishing the warrior guy. I have been tweaking his sculpt, working on the wrinkles and stuff. I think I need to retopo parts of him just to keep things clean and orderly. But yeah I will definitely post more on him and other stuff.
till then a bunch of stuff.
I got to do some lower poly stuff on the alien guy, getting him down to 350 and 250 polys.
I'll be posting more soon
I've been really overly critical of my stuff lately resulting in a lack of posts, but here's a pic and a video of a sculpt I did in 3 days time. only took a few hours though.
Hey man, love your stuff. Especially the 3d model of the warrior on the 3rd page.
I still have a lot to learn in both 2d and 3d but id like to give you some feedback on the 2d stuff.
Ive noticed that a lot of your concepts seem to go from X color to almost straight black/very dark or stay all around the same color. Try to get a little more variance in there and i think that will help a lot in making your concepts more readable and less blurry. Definitely try to do some short blending practice lessons using just a brush tool (in photoshop) or equivilent. No smudge tools.
First I did a quick sculpt of Yakumo Fujii from Yuzo Takada's manga/anime 3x3 eyes.
here's my reference..... I made some changes to the face and what not, but I think he's coming out well. I might pursue him a bit more. If anything I would tone down the muscle definition and try to incorporate more of Yuzo Takada's style akin to what they did with the herge's style in tin tin.
and as always stuff from my p and p thread. (I promise he is almost done)
I'm going to be working on a couple characters in the next 3 months for my portfolio. The detective guy up above is included and I'm going to clean him up but I got way into doing this character. If you guys can give me really really really heavy critiques it will be greatly appreciated. I need to get better and I can always count on you guys to help.
the first batch are card designs I did for my friend and former professor Brian Hagan for a card game he designed for the Pittsburgh Tekko show con about a month ago.
This was a piece I drew up for the last Global game jam. My team made a game called helionauts where you had to prevent a sun from going super nova.
Just a doodle.
The most recent doodle I did a character generator thing. I got a shallow, embarrassed, destroyer (attila the hun...) who may or may not be a dwarf. And this is what I doodled.
I made a lot of progress on the low poly and textures for the Far east archer/soldier and should post something for him soon
The Tenzin sculpt looks strong, I think if you give both the detective and the samurai (?) the same love and care you gave to Tenzin, it will help a lot.
Yeah man. I have long neglected learning the proper way to paint and giving myself the time to finish things. Thanks for the link, I will definitely check it out! : )
Progress on the far east character! Actually artstream you brought up a good point. I haven't really nailed down any features that tie that guy to any one eastern culture. I took armor ideas from chinese, japanese, and korean armor and sort of threw it together. I also got a lot of inspiration from Ki yong sim's Blade master. Its an awesome model. But enough with the banter here is art.
I'm feeling good about this character. I think I'll go with sort of an exiled prince idea with him. As always crits and critiques are welcome! I will be doing his paudrons and side pads next along with texture clean up and polish: )

Should have more finished textures by the end of the week
Your improvement from start to finish is awesome!

Check this out, its awesome. http://andantonius.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d1obt6h
just some rough doodles and a wip character. I'll post more soon.
cross post from p and p. Messing around with color scheme. Everythings a rough pass so I should have cleaner textures and other stuff up soon.

more stuff coming soon
and a speed sculpt I did in half an hour or so
I'll have more stuff soon, schools almost out for a little bit. I'm looking forward to getting a lot done over our one week break.
first is a character I've been modeling on the side based off sort of a phantasy star/jetset radio guy. Really basic and rough textures at the moment.
TEnzin sculpt. I posted it a couple days ago on p and p
and a detective character I'm starting up.
more crap as I do it.
But yeah here's my new character.
