yah i may or may not fire this up on the official pcount server... i was thinking of not replacing the current one, but turning it off and firing this up.. see what its like for a few days and see how it goes. then nuking it and the old one is turned back on...
then, assuming you're on windows, press winkey+r type %appdata% (with the % around it) navigate to .minecraft/bin and rename your old minecraft.jar and replace it with the new one.
Server was having issues earlier this evening. R13 rebooted it, but it was still misbehaving. Looks like he set it back to the 1.7 version, cause I just reverted my minecraft install to that and I was able to log in.
I was having that problem on my server as well(though it was just 1.7) I'm thinking that it was something on mojang's end that was causing server login problems.
I've been able to go on to the polycount server using the ip address- I'm still on 1.7 and not had any issues- might be something to do with people having 1.8 then reverting back?
Yeah 1.8 seems very unstable (obviously since it's a pre-release). I look forward to the changes though, some real cool stuff coming up and the new biomes are suhweeet.
I've got my own lil island not far from spawn. I notice there appears to be rift in the ground a short hike away with some prebuilt pathways down in it. Shall have to go exploring!
awesome update. does each update erase your spawn and inventory? I was logged on before ya just updated and lost both. luckily I wasn't too far away from my chest and bed, hoping its not a bug or something.

if doesnt, just choose play offline after download. ( until they fix the login server ...)
They have a closed beta with external people going on to test the most for the most harsh bugs.
Still, he doesn't seem so upset about it, so it might be, or have turned into a PR spin

Can't play offline either.
also this is vanilla mcraft again, no mods. white list is in effect.

I've noticed that the maps i've generated in 1.8 have been mostly been "waterworlds". Took a few goes to get a spawn on a big land mass.
Either islands, shallow spots, or possible under water cave entrances.
By the way, are the NPC communities only showing up in desert environments?
It keeps stopping the update @ 29%
Creative mode has spoiled me xD
a mod or op can give you creative powers, maybe there can be an approval process for people making community structures.

re-downloaded it now its fine
Had that same issue. Yeah, redownloading seems to fix it.
Would be nice to have a default server to go to when I think about multiplayer
