The clip on the BBC website is probably one of the most horrifying I've ever seen, of anything, ever. My co-worker described it as a storm of civilisation soup...
Man, this is terrible, I was just watching it on TV. One disaster after another. Here in Australia, we've had our disasters: Victoria bushfires, Queensland floods and next to us we have New Zealand getting earthquakes.
I hope the Japanese stays safe, and the tsunami/earthquakes will end soon.
Hell fire - ten metre high wall of mud, vehicles and houses wiping out everything in it's path. I hope they can keep the four affected nuclear reactors cool.
Anyone heard from Hawken King? Is he still out there?
The Japanese definitely do plan for these things being that they are an island, and they know that, but this Earthquake was fucking ENORMOUS. Not much they could of done to prepare for it other than what they already have done....
My heart goes out to Japan, hope all are safe...
My heart is gonna sink tomorrow if I hear a high death count...
I had my first earthquake experience here in LA and it was a 4.4 or something. Felt my apartment building sway back and forth and I was only on the 3rd floor. It must've been horrifying in a 30+ story building in Tokyo.
Currently staying in Tokyo, was woken up this afternoon by the quake. There have been many aftershocks in the past few hours, kind of hard to relax, but I think they have finally stopped.
Tokyo is very congested at the moment, many thousands of people trapped in the city unable to get home, phones are jammed, trains unable to run etc.
I was in in Brisbane for the Queensland floods in Australia earlier this year (my suburb was affected) and I have to say, this tsunami seems much, much worse. The scale of this, and the loss of life is shocking.
Apparently Tokyo wasnt badly hit, but the North is badly damaged, though this is just what Ive heard friends in tokyo say, I've seen no news on this at all, almost afraid to look
*runs off to email Lamont* Come on guys, let's save him with emails! :P
This is awful. My girlfriend text me this morning to say what had happened so I sat in bed watching the news... You really don't think of this sorta stuff happening to such civilised cities/towns (I know similar earthquakes happened in Oz and New Zealand, but when you think of Japan you think of super-techland).
I wish the best for everyone over there, and hope the mortality count doesn't rise any more.

Well, it could of been a lot worse if it wasn't in Japan. Look at Hatti, its widely thought that if they had even a 5th of Japans building codes and construction methods more people would be alive today. I'm sure Japan will be back up on its feet and teaching us all amazing things about how to minimize earthquake damage. Until then stay safe guys.

Just the way they handle it at all blows my mind. I mean, I know they get a lot of earthquakes over there, but I couldn't believe the videos I've seen where they just calmly walk out of their building and evacuate to a park.
Makes me even more ashamed that my country crumbles under a couple inches of snow.
Friends of mine told me their house is still up and no one of them is hurt but most of the furniture is broken. They live a 150km away from tokyo, power supply and water is down for them though.
What I found amazing was in the middle of an earthquake the supermarket staff were more concerned about the bottles of wine falling off the shelf than their own safety

smaller earthquakes seem to happen quite often in japan.
Lamont is the only person I know that lives in Japan, he automatically popped in my head when I heard what happened. Hopefully he's alright, crossing my fingers for him.

I'm going to be watching out for tsunamis, hopefully nothing hits here.
Hope most people got the early warning and could get out, though I already heard a village was wiped out by the tsunami already.
Edit: apparently the tsunami was 10m is some areas... The aftermath of this is going to be huge:poly122:
Just watch: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598
It's even worse when you realise people are likely in some of those vehicles/buildings.
I hope the Japanese stays safe, and the tsunami/earthquakes will end soon.
And yeah, come on Japan PC'ers, let us know you're ok!
but, when you see a whole communities vehicles, building, etc floating down the street like leaves in a pond. It kinda puts things in perspective.
Hope PC'ers out in that part of the world are ok.
Hope the toll isn't as bad as it looks like it will be, very scary.
Edit: Good lord, 8.9 that is MASSIVE. Hopes and prayers go to japan right now.

Lamont's based in Japan too, he's outside of Tokyo I believe, lets hope he's ok also.

Earthquake after earthquake.
Should we start a pole to see which country will be next?
jeeeez. Hope both Hawking, Lamont and any other polycounters in the effected region are alright =\
He has one on his portfolio if you can give it a try: http://cgbylg.com/?page_id=60
Hope everyone is OK
Everyone located in Japan should tune in so we know that they're okay..
The Lamont case makes me worried.
