i'm not sure if i'm qualified enough for giving an advice, but try using grey background for your shaded sketches.
this will create some point of comparison between objects and space.
and may be bringing up contrast a bit would not hurt too.
marlfox8 : I don't rly think about it, the technique I use grows with time and is an automatic result of trying to make the pencil marks look like the subject.
I love all of your gesture sketching, but I think it really lacks something having only one line weight. Giving those curves an extra boldness can help pop out the motion. Keep it up!

Quick little crit-- you're not making your heads deep enough on the side profiles. A good proportion to remember is that the head is as tall as it is deep, typically speaking that is. But yeah, otherwise cool stuff.
