Ravenslayer : i think that he's following the imaginary roundness of the shape with is pencil line. which give depth to the shape. Think about the roudness of a sphere and apply that to muscle or body composition and it will give you depth.
sorry if its not clear... my primary language is not english!
Ravenslayer - I just follow my gut, it's part like Darkstar say's, and I could tell you all about how I do it in my head.. BUT! I think the best way to go about it is to just try for yourself.. I don't think i can put it into proper words that would really help you.. just KEEP trying.. you will find way's to create the illusion eventually..
The idea is to study from life or other art you like, and learn how to imitate it. This will give you a vocabulary of visual words so to speak...
Think of studying the visual world as another way to listen to the visual words.. It can be very hard at first.. just like someone talking to you in a new language can sound like totally random mumbling garbage..
but no fear.. after some time, sometimes a long long time you will start to see patterns emerge..
I sweet in your sketchbook you are doing quite well already.. just keep going.. mastering any language takes time..
also.. When I look at your work, I'm like.. that's awesome! How does he/she do that? That is like soooooo much better then what I can do.. I should study this..
i kind of get what you mean, lots of things i do i don't always try to analyze myself i just know it should be this or that way by practicing. I just need to practice pencil drawing a lot more i guess ^^
what i notice about your paints is that you stay in the same hue range a lot with each tone , maybe you could try and experiment with some contrasting colors in shadowareas for example

great work
love your shading technique, what pencil do you use and how do you determine the direction of your lines to bring out the forms so well?
