1 is just a hollowed out tiki head stuck to a wooden grip and stuff maybe with a little umbrella sticking out instead of a fuse
2 is a jerry-rigged flare gun. the barrel is a piece of bamboo and the handle and trigger/firing mechanism are jammed inside a coconut and there is a drift wood grip wrapped on but I may think of changing it, I just wanted to keep the Pyros hand placement the same
3 is just a completely wooden flare gun, with a somewhat rectangular cylinder barrel with a nice carving of it of the sea or something
I love 1. Maybe a fuse with a little umbrella around it rather than one or the other. Like the umbrella top has a hole in the middle and is halfway down the twine fuse.
Maybe have the mouth of the tiki flaregun be a tiki face's mouth, as well.
@Khthon, do you mean the fuse wraps around the stick of the umbrella and then pokes through the top of it?
As suggested, tiki mouths at the end of the barrel:
Just flat colors for the axe. What do you prefer, team colored grip or the off-white/light brown grip? It will be bump mapped to look like twine. And I may change the color of the string holding the teeth to off-white as well like it is in my reference
I'm kinda stuck on how to do the stock of the gun, right now it looks kinda boring. I was thinking of putting a half a coconut right behind the tiki so the little umbrella could stick out of it
@Rogue Trooper - I realized that but I would think its not going to be an actual physical barrier per se and the flare would just kinda clip through it which wouldn't matter because you the player won't see it and people around you wouldn't be able to tell either
So any thoughts on incorporating the coconut into the stock somehow?
I think the designs will be a nice touch. I think I'll just bump them into it and give it a nice wood texture and I think the little umbrella will be team colored. And thanks for all the feedback Khthon, you seem to be the only one looking at my thread :P
I'm here as well. If you want I can send you an obj of the valve flaregun model. Looking at that really helped me to figure out the basic features and mechanisms of the flaregun.
Quick update. Flare gun is almost done, just have to figure out how it will all fit together since the coconut is just there and not actually incorporated into it, but all the parts are there. I'm just wondering if I should include a hammer on the gun or if I should move the umbrella/fuse back (since it kinda is supposed to be the hammer) so it will line up with the original flare gun's hammer
Grah! I'm trying to bake the AO for the axe but every time I get some black areas and the laces holding the teeth are dotted with black, so that means some of the normals are flipped or whatever, but when I conform all of the normals it goes black, then I reverse and it goes back to the weirdness. Or am I not doing something with the normals right?
Is it possible to just get the AO as good as I can and just fix the problems in photoshop? I don't know much about AO baking since I just learned how to do it
I love how un-smooth the tiki is actually, it makes it look like it was carved out of wood, but I think the umbrella is a bit too silly, but that's just me.
Yep, but you can get a better result by choosing a normal angle so it selectively smooths any edges that have a smaller angle. Because if you make everything smooth then it'll look ok for the barrel and such but not parts that should have hard edges like the teeth.
The problen though, is if you're going to be submitting this as an obj like valve suggests then normal smoothing info isn't saved in that format. So basically you'd just be doing this to get an idea of how it'd look smoothed in the end.
Hmm, well thanks for bringing up that OBJs don't save normal smoothing
I did actually think it created interest in the design since it was the one thing that looked 'carved' like Khthon pointed out soo maybe I'll just leave it

The hat's nearly finished, I'm just gonna add a few details to the fronds on top unless there are other suggestions
@Viceroy, could you draw on the hat since I'm having trouble conceptualizing what you mean

I'm liking 1
I like all the mouths except 2. Prefer 1 or 4, I like seeing the full set of top and bottom teeth. you could add a couple sharp teeth in there.
I also started modeling the flare gun, I think it will look awesome. Already thought of a name for it: The Tiki Torcher
Too bad there's not time enough for you to make a volcano/tiki themed flamethrower. (Lots of volcanic activity on the Hawaiian islands)
DO WANT!

Same here, those are really nice colors.
If someone would go out of their way and offer to do it themselves I would be much obliged but no biggie if you don't want
I'm probably still gonna bump map it to look like twine
And

Though I don't like how unsmooth the tiki is so I may have to go in and add some more geometry or something. Suggestions are welcome
What's the tri count at right now?
