I really think the darts should be visible in the first person view. Maybe you could create some sort of device to hold them and strap it to the scope. It would add some interest to an otherwise fairly plain looking scope.
Keep up the good work. I'm loving all of your items. Crocodile skin boots as a misc item?
Oh man that would be cool. By the way if you nail that rifle then this pack is going to be a definite winner. Personally I preferred it when you had the bottle thing under the barrel and the darts stuck to the side of the butt. Anyway, Loving your work sir.
Thanks everybody!! Its nice to see so many people concerned about the sniper's well being when he has to place his face so close to these poisonous darts. As a result I outfitted the darts with a super high tech safety solution.
So I think I am just about done with the diffuse on this guy. It was a lot of fun paining this one and I think it turned out pretty well. Just need to pump out a spec map and then take it into the engine. Let me know if you think there is anything that I should change.
Also, the croc skin boots don't sound like a bad idea :poly121:. I might have to run with that just for the heck of it.
That is some beautiful brush work. I like the little TF2 logo on the gage too. Lots of nice details, can't see Valve turning this kind of quality down.
Late and repeated as it might be, I'm a bit...against the choice of putting the airTank and darts there and I would suggest maybe doing something along the lines of the Metro 2033, Tihar gun.
Other then that I cant even begin to tell you how much I love the Hat/Razorback thingy. Really. It's the most awesome thing ever to've come up so far, as I already tend to "hide" in water, sniper from the depths. Even renaming myself to Michalligator for the sake of it this is clearly a gift from above.
As for gameplay mechanic I'd love to "ruin" it with allowin the sniperScope to be "normalish" when snipin from the dephths but that just me and everyone'll hate it.
(Added underwater capacity might be silly 'n op but it's still on my wishlist )
Anti-death Safety Corks are aces!
the whole thing is really well put together and I don't think you really need to change the brush strokes but, uh, how does he load the darts? the chamber under the scop doesn''t look nearly big enough.
All I can say is wow! Your whole set looks brilliant. If you do go with the Croc Boots be sure to make the leather on the toe awesome like it is in this pair of boots:
As a result I outfitted the darts with a super high tech safety solution.
Awesome! Great solution that totally fits with the look.
I agree the texture doesn't exactly match the TF2 look yet. I'd suggest losing a few details and adding in some harsher more obvious square brush strokes. At least to see how that looks. It does look really nice though.
Texture comments:
Your scratches could do with being a little sharper, they look quite fuzzy
The glass of the scope should be much more of a flat-colour. Let the phong, specularity and lightwarp make it look like glass.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I went back and fiddled with the texture bit more. I added more color to the wood, smoothed out some of the grain, added a layer of texture strokes to the metal, and flattened the lens. So here is the updated gun with a side by side of the TF2 sniper. Im going to move onto getting it in game now, this time im serious :poly124:.
Oh and as far as loading the darts... He just angles them ever so slightly and then jams them in there, like a man. Or at least thats what im going to say so I don't have to change the size of the chamber.
Oh and Sparkwire, I did model this to work with the default animations but I will definitely let you know if I make a more interesting weapon that demands some animations.
Thx man, I did do a fair amount of uv stacking. All the darts, feathers, strings, and half the body of the gun are all stacked. And some misc things here and there are also stacked.
This is excellent but still too painterly. I think you should tone down the brush strokes, if you look at valves textures for tf2 they are pretty basic and the painterly brush marks are very subtle.
I think we need an actual in-game image to see whether the brush strokes are out of place or not. Sometimes what looks like it may be out of place can fit in surprisingly well in-game.
Haha thanks guys, I will have to remember to delete portions of everything I compare my models to I guess :poly124:.
A blowgun was definitely something I thought about originally but then I wanted to refrain from using custom animations. But as it turns out Sparkwire has now volunteered to step in and do some custom animations for the rifle, so thats pretty exciting. In the meantime I messed around and made a pair of crocskin boots and a pocket full of darts for the sniper's misc item. Neither of these are textured and as a result they are not very interesting but here they are. Not sure if I will even bother finishing these.
I like those darts, they would make a pretty neat misc item when used along with the rifle!
Everything's awesome so far mate! You have a great chance of winning this!
Everything looks great, but I still believe that you should consider adding a laser sight to the dart rifle to avoid gameplay balance issues. The fact that Snipers are the only class with a sight is countered by its visible laser dot. To distinguish your dart rifle from the regular Sniper Rifle, maybe try a different laser dot design (example: an "x" instead of a dot). Better yet, your dart rifle should function like the Medic's Syringe Gun/Blutsauger. If the darts shoot similar to the needles (with a much longer range however), then maybe a laser sight would not be needed for gameplay balance.
OH you know what I just realized? Doesn't the sniper rifle have a laser on it? Maybe you could put a little laser somewhere on your new rifle somehow. On the original rifle they had it right underneath the scope.
Who knows? Maybe on this model of rifle... - No laser scope.

Looking great otherwise

This rifle actually looks like it would work beautifully with the standard animations.

And I immediately hate the blowgun idea because it steps on your gorgeous tranq rifle.
Also, I just wanna see it in full shaded glory.

It's an effect from the scope itself.
That looks absolutely amazing.
Great work!
