I always say "whack-com" and everyone mocks me then corrects me with "way-com." I've tried to switch to saying it that way but, for whatever reason, the former pronunciation sticks in my head :-/
I just got my daughter the bamboo for xmas, and it comes with a tutorial video. The lady in the tutorial kept referring to it as way-com. She had a British accent, so maybe it's a cultural thing, but I would think the company would have her stating their name correctly in the video included with their product
I think we should come up with the most abstract and ridiculous pronunciation possible, and start correcting everyone we know using it, while being very insistent about it
:edit:
"Wank-cum" sounds PERFECT. Let's all make a pact right now to go with that
I'm pretty sure it's Wa - as in 'Whack' and Com - as in 'Competition'.
As is said above, it's a Japanese country and I don't think they have any 'ay' sound (at least not in any of the Anime I watch )
also I am from England but still pronounce it ZeeBrush, ZedBrush sounds so dumb even tho it is probably linguistically correct.
And it's surely 'My Ah' for Maya right?
As for Softimage, I don't think I've ever said it in conersation but I would probably pronounce it Ex Ess Eye.
+1 to zed brush and I'm assuming most people from the UK will also pronounce it that way.
zbrush = zed - brush
wacom = wa - kom
modo = moe - doe
softimage = soft - e - marge
maya = may - ar (like "mayor", with a higher pitched ending)
edit; actually when I think about it more, wa - kom is more correct than wak - om I blame the lack of variety on the poll and rick's reply saying "wak - om" making me think that would be my choice as well
Why do you add "r"s into the mix for maya and softimage?
Why do you add "r"s into the mix for maya and softimage?
It was mainly to emphasise the pronunciation so people don't misread it.
I think people have different ways of reading "ah", one way is like the "a" in "math" and the other is like the "a" in "mars".
Its easier to just put an r there instead of a h to get the idea across. Its not a very heavy "r" sound, its just there to show how the sound ends.
I'm pretty sure its Maya as in Aztec, Mayan civilization. "My Ah" instead of "May-uh"
Yea you're probably right, I've just always called it "may ar/h" from habit because it looks more logical. In my opinion if they wanted Mayans to be pronounced Myans they should of called it Myans Mya is almost unmistakable. Unless you're Japanese, then you'll pronounce it "mi-ya"
Actually after some more thinking, "Ma-ya" works best.
Wut-cum? I don't think so. "KP spam?" you say? Ppff! No such thing! This topic is all good. Everything I post is artistic, digital, and awesome. So sit down and eat your black and greens.
From the Nazi censorship admin stickie:
... "posts of "I ate cookies today" or "My car is blue" or whatever really need to come to an end."
This topic does not fall under 'whatever'. This is of the highest importance to all game artists. FACT.
"please try to keep topics related to video games, digital/traditional art or tech related matters."
What does Wacom do again? OH that's right, they make hardware for digital artists. If you had to associate arguing semantics with a certain group of people, who would you choose? Geeks and nerds. Okay, suck my balls.
What you guys have to realize is that bearkub and the other admins, well, they're old, quite frankly. They still listen to Punk Rock for Christ sakes! You call it "Oldies".
They don't understand you, they came from another time. In reality, they actually understand you more than you do, which is what I'm actually getting at: They don't like you. You see, the Polycount Lords just want you noobs to shut up so they don't have to read your useless emo bull crap.
The one thing old and new can relate with, is what this board is all about. Video game art. Anything that would be discussed within those parameters is what they want discussed here. Otherwise, find a forum that cultivates that other interest you have, such as yourself! Using a blog, or say, facebook or twitter.
If you guys were more interesting, the old dusty admins wouldn't tell you guys to shut the hell up.
... I remember hearing it pronounced whack-'em in the official videos though, so since then I've sort of subconsciously been hearing that, even though I still say way-com. The 'o' makes the 'a' say its name; that's what I learned in first grade, and I'm sticking to it!
That's what I thought, but everyone here says sinteeek. I've bowed to peer pressures and changed my pronunciation. I'm such a disappointment to myself...

Maya is pronounced the same as the ancient civilization.

When I called wacom, they pronounced it walk-um.

Digging a little deeper: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacom
wacom is in fact a Japanese 'Company' and not a Japanese 'Country'.

Wak-om Wak-om Wak-om Wak-om...
Way-com
pronounced in English as /'wɑːkɒm/ or /'w
OK, so when something ends with an A, you Brits add an -AR. I've noticed this. Got it.
And when something ends in -AR (or -ER), you eliminate the -AR/-ER, and add an -AH sound. I've noticed this as well.
So Maya is May-ar
And Butter is Butt-ah
So eliminate the A, add AR, and eliminate the AR/ER, and and AH. That makes a lot of sense.
...Or not?!
Sounds like you are about to "RIP THE LID OFF OF IT"

Then it's
Nu-lee-knucks.
Euler = Oy-Lar != Ew-Ler
Bezier = Beh-zee-yAY != Bez-E-er
Oooooooooh, I see where you're going with that.....
Anyway, I've always said Y-com, because of my poor and lazy english.
Rens I know
Now the next important pronunciation conundrum:
1. Sintik
2. Sinteeek
3. Chintik
Which is it? Huh?
Sinteeeek would prolly be spelled Cintique
How do you pronounce Adobe?
1: Ahdohb
2: Ahdohbee
But I still say "Way-com"
