The results are in for the Rookie Awards 2019, and we’re excited to reveal all of the talented Unreal Engine students and devs who earned the titles “Rookie of the Year” and “Game of the Year.” Game of the Year – Console & PC: Winner 2019
Spire | University of Hertfordshire | United Kingdom
Spire is a second-year university game project produced over the course of a semester at the University of Hertfordshire. The game, which is built entirely in Unreal Engine, follows the path of a knight on his journey through a cold and harsh forest.
Project: Star Bounty started as an idea set in a science fiction world and gradually progressed into concepts inspired by many games to showcase the potential of a new world, as well as paying homage to ones that already exist.
Thank you for your interest. There is no age limit, the older the better.
Also if it helps, we also offer a full time and part time MA in Games Art and Design or Animation. It's 1 year full time or two years part time. For mature students its sometimes a better option.
If you're interested in the MA feel free to talk to the programmer leader Ian Willcock <i.willcock@herts.ac.uk>

UH Alumni Ben Webster, Josiah Ward and Aaron Coker has made this game Filament. It is in the Steam Game Festival until Monday and people can play the demo until then. Full game releases April 23rd
Thank you Epic Games for making this amazing Project Spotlight about the University of Hertfordshire.
We are very proud of all our students hard work, they just keep on getting better every year and we are really looking forward to seeing there final major projects this year.
They said to me "So after graduating in 2017 myself, Ben and Aaron decided that instead of getting industry jobs we'd make our own. Initially we continued development of our third year project but it wasn't really compelling enough to us as a game to continue working on it so we made Filament instead.
Filament is a laid back, story rich and fully narrated puzzle game centred around solving sets of cable-based puzzles whilst exploring a seemingly abandoned spaceship.
Filament began as a game jam entry to the week-long Epic Megajam, where it placed as one of the winners. Since then, it has entered full development with the number of puzzles continuing to grow and new mechanics being implemented. On top of this, a full original soundtrack is in the works, as well as extensive narration."
An RPG experience set in a world inhabited by Frogs! From friendly frog folk to dangerous beasts, the Anura RPG Game project being developed by a team of Hertfordshire University students looks to offer an expansive RPG world with an amphibian theme.
Patty Pan is a 3D animated short film rendered in Unreal Engine 4.
The Story
Set in a world of vegetables, Patty Pan focuses on an unsuspecting Radish Man who suddenly has the responsibility of parenthood thrust upon him when he finds a baby Patty Pan on his doorstep. Though first sweet, things soon descend into chaos. Desperately trying to console patty, he soon realises that appeasing her won't be so simple.
Dichotomy is a VR rhythm-like game set within a celestial depiction of the mind. With levels themed around the five main types of OCD, you must avoid negative thoughts and compulsive behaviour to break through to a clear mind.
To all my students and Alumni at the University of Hertfordshire, I just wanted to say a big congratulations for entering the worldwide Rookies competition. Fingers crossed for this year 😊
