thanks for the encouragement guys . I'm having trouble deciding.. so I figure last thing I'll try is doing a little bit of work up on the concept of each to see what jumps out, then its final decision time . I'm dying to get into the nitty gritty details of something..
heres the first workup:
I dunno why but I really love the idea of having all this evil shit and spikes everywhere, and then this cute perfect anime eye smack bang in the middle of it all, in a sort of Arseface from Preacher fashion. kinda creepy
DUUUUUDE- do that one for SURE. I seems like his feet could be a little more mean lookin, but right now the uper body is the sheeeit-. I love that arm.
herm, ok it turned out more steampunky than I was intending (I blame that partly on the brass hue I gave it) but anyway:
edit: I just came across a link I was trying to remember for ages, keith thompson- this design was reminding me a bit of some stuff I'd seen ages ago. if I did this one, I'd steer it in his direction, because his robots are so freakin cool: http://www.keiththompsonart.com/robots.html
I like this concept a lot, though I am wondering how you might make the big bubble more interesting since that would be the primary focus. The segmented shapes you had before broke it up so your eye could move on to the next interesting bit. Maybe employ a similar design? Or room for a head/creature inside? Good stuff!
I am not a huge fan of the tiny head on the first one, and I think the undead guy is a bit all over the place design-wise. The last one has some cool things about it, but no real focal point without a face, or even a head.
Overall I think the undead guy has the most character. I like how his back armor has the look of a shanty town. I kind of think those design cues could be expanded to other parts tying it together. Mismatched wood and cardboard armor would also fit with the undead theme I think, although maybe it is just my fixation on bum characters that makes me think that would be cool
Hey Rooster! I like your work.
The last yellow sphere body is nice.
By the way, sorry to bother you with strange questions but,
What do you use for your sketches?
I like it because it seems to vibe.
Please tell me your secret
garanga: do you mean the 3d? that's all done in maya, there's a rough description of how it works in this PDF: http://www.redprodukt.com/post/3dconcept.pdf
otherwise, it's just photoshop- I use the pencil tool most, with a flat wide brush
ninjas: some very good points man thanks for the crit- agreed about undead blokie not feeling cohesive- he would need another pass just to bring it all home I think, as konstruct says the feet/legs arent too interesting as is, and the shanty, rough and ready feel would be extended out. For the robot, imo if the 'pod' has cool enough material and wear, and maybe a stencil on the front, it will be enough. But, I was also toying with the idea of having the pod removable and some interesting gubbins underneath, like machinery or a cyborg head/brain
Awesome work Rooster! Hahah I like them all, and the last guy even though he has a steampunk feel, I think it works:) I will look forward to what you intend to do this year, and suprised a chicken isnt involved!
Thank you for the document Rooster.
I didn't know nothing about this workflow.
Your character design mixing steel and cloth is really cool.
I like the shapes and colors.
Will there be a stance with the helmet opened?
May be the fact that we can't see what is inside
make it more mysterious and attractive.
explorin' some ideas.. I suspect the head will change one way or another. the theme I'm going for is contrast/contradiction. I'm thinking quite sumptuous, flowing flesh and fabric, against mouldering rusted iron, perfectly formed open eye in a rotting skull..
I havent even read the rules yet of course, I'll need to see how I can spin it into a category
I've always loved your penmanship sir rooster. I frigin love this latest one. The lower half of the body reminds me of some kind of bird. It would be rad if you had an undead bird wearing a human skull as a mask.
408- hehe I was actually thinking about giving him short fat stumpy digits I'll try both
dur23: awesome idea about the mask, cheers! that'll be one of the variations for sure
I really like the colours and gesture on the last concept, they work really nicely. The base mesh is coming along nicely too, Gougespire sounds good to me ;P
I havent even read the rules yet of course, I'll need to see how I can spin it into a category
Looking good matey!... Looking at this I would say he's typically looking like a Demon Prince. But you could continue you're contrast/contradiction theme and try and get him into the other races/classes. He could quite easily be a cyborg. What would really be a contradiction would be to try and get him to be a Norm's. As he looks anything but a Norm at the moment. I will say that having one perfect eye would have me lean toward some kind of Sniper class if he's using weapons. Anyway. Just some food for thought.
C&C on the drawing it self. You say your after sumptuous skin, but having the spots there just makes me think of leopard fur/skin. Is that what you're after? If so, I'm not sure it works for me, then again its another contradiction having a skull type face and furry body, so i best shut it eh...
Anyway. Keep it coming
BTW, wheres the lizard dude gone? You dropped him then?
sorry ricky lizard dudes out the windae . yeah when I say skin, what I really mean is like rabbit fur, short and soft- I don't know yet if the black spots will be colouration, or hard material poking through the skin..
thanks for all the responses guys
davidskiwan: I like gougespire too hehe. what about Fleshpock? hmm not the same ring to it
here's a bit more, I really want to go for something more memorable than a skull head. bit more Guillermo del Toro. here's the newest revision:
Great start on the sculpt Rich, I like how you're already getting a nice different feel for the harder and softer surfaces.
I think this could be a really cool way to continue if he has a fair amount of bony stuff next to fleshy stuff - near the end, really sharpen up the hard bits, and have nice gestural curves to the flesh... will look awesome and contrasted in surface definition
cheers!
MoP: yeah, thats along my lines of thinking- the black spots will definately be protruding bone/chitin, nestled amongs this fatty flesh. Might give him some open sores too for good measure . heres and update: looking pretty sinewy at the moment, but thats just part of the process:
edit: also kinda vortigaunty too, but that should vanish shortly >:-)
i think the ass cheeks might be a little small (not that im demanding a large ass be crafted), not sure, just looks odd in comparison to the size of the thighs.
situation update: my graphics card appears to be buggered. can only run in safe mode with lines on the screen- So, I bought a new one (geforce GTX 260) and the fecking thing won't fit in the fecking case.
so, I'm a bit stumped at the moment. cant do much, and got a 200 quid card on my desk that wont fit in my pc
Sorry to hear that Rooster, the model was coming along nicely. Can you not return the card and get something smaller, like a 9800 GT? Most places will let you return stuff for up to 30 days. Or, if there's a problem with it being open, some stores will take back open-box items for a small charge, like 10 or 15% of the original purchase. So maybe you'd lose out on 20 or 30 quid but that's better than 200.
OK! I'm back in the race!
i do not know how he did it, and I suspect I would have cringed if I had watched him, but our tech guy Steve managed to crowbar the card into my case! oh yeah..
But.... I don't like the render....Take the card back out...it's poo.... I say card...it looked more like a Aircraft black box flight recorder, but twice the size
man, im totally at a wall atm, I need to model his armour but I'm just not having fun with it . I just spent tonight making lit spheres from google photos :P
do you still have your heart set on the armor groups you have been working on thus far?- o and i hate it when the wind falls out of your sails so to speak.
i like all the things stuck in his flesh!
and those pants look like a good start... he's like an alien sportsman of some sort!
keep it up, but don't beat yourself up if you're not feeling it, you could always just try and get one of your 3d sketches polished up and optimised to fit into the 10,000 triangle and 2048x2048 texture budget and just submit that, i bet you'd get a lot of votes just for the style

maybe his other eye should be gouged out
Im not a fan of the head though.
head has some wierd feel, but i like it!

My suggestion is to develop some more gnarly hands and fingers, give him some killer claws!
Perhaps this composition could also benefit from some very muscular calves / bulky ankles.
I like the one-eyed look too, you should make him leering
dur23: awesome idea about the mask, cheers! that'll be one of the variations for sure
got some tris in there, but don't know if i care enough to try get rid they're not in major places.. still, wish I'd planned ahead
edit: I think I'm going to call him something like : Gougespire, or Mouldflay, or Fleshspike. lord of corruption!
You can surely pull out something cool looking.
I think the sphere guy was a really good concept, but better for more of a minion character

agree with MoP about the contrast between hard and soft areas
cant wait to see it progress

anyway heres an update:
basically I kinda want the skin to look like latex foam
and those pants look like a good start... he's like an alien sportsman of some sort!
