Well, I haven't been here in a loooong time. Anyway, no sketches yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll be making a demon.

*EDIT*

Well, guess I'm done. There are a lot of changes I wish I could make- even with an extra week I still couldn't do everything I wanted to. I learned a few things along the way and probably should've started over several times, but... Anyway, thanks to everyone for the feedback, the advice, the support- I know with so many entrants it's hard to give anyone much time.

Wow, tons of people seem to be competing here. Crazy. Okay, here's my first idea. Sorry, I made a few thumb silhouettes in my sketchbook, but this was the only one worth moving forward on. I have a few other ideas, but I figured I'd scribble this up today and see if it'd get any response.

    demonrider01.jpg

Is that a Demon Princess maybe? I'm wanting to do more with the legs- peeling flesh, sinewy muscle, maybe some bony armor growths with some illumination beneath. Any thoughts?
  • machuca
woah, this feels creepy! not sure about her helmet and definitely not sure about the weapon.
maybe give her a shield to compensate for her almost naked armor, which i think you should keep.

Yeah, the weapon really is just a placeholder. Not sure what to do with it. The helmet... maybe I'll go more satanic with the horns, less reindeer. Thanks for looking!

Definitely like the woodchipper. Nice concept.
  • TheSplash
This looks great!, would be good to see the girl fused with the beast more, atm it kinda looks like she has no legs and is sitting on it. Perhaps a weapon made of bone could be cool, like they have in monster hunter.

Looks great so far...I'd push the difference between the front and back legs, especially their joint setup.
  • indian_boy
    oh daymn yea
    this is gonna be good

but i agree with gavku about pushing the distance
atm it seems kind of unnatural - despite the obvious unrealness.

Cool, great feedback! Thanks for all the advice- I'll take it. I like the idea of a bone weapon (the Splash) and agree that the female torso needs to blend better with the body below it. Gavku, the legs... absolutely. Will do.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking about armor and lack thereof (hurray!). This pic shows two options- also, I've included some runic drawings on the gal's skin- maybe these are glowing green cuts. Maybe it's too much. One big fear of mine is going overboard on details, but then it seems that's not possible in this competition.

personally prefer left side (post#11). You should try some variations on the legs!

Two votes for the armored bra. See, I was thinking the straps were a little less common, more demonic... less princess Leia. More Jabba the Hutt's obese dancer. But I digress. Here's a leg study.

really liking your concept, for the spine couldn't you make i come out of her back and go into the spine of the skull on the back.
and maybe for the creatures head something more headish would be nice imo some kind of hellhound or something like that

Very original concept, and yes, yes I remember you from a long while back mr Joolz! Welcome back to the jolly green giant :)

Only thing right now that I wonder about concept wise is, wether you should move the torso forward, like the classic centaur, or leave it in the middle like this...
Maybe even more backwards, so it would be her legs form the backlegs? (without changing the backlegs as they are now.)

Thanks for the advice- I took it!

I decided I needed to start modelling. This is still concept phase- nothing final. I'm feeling pretty good about the overall design here, though part of me still feels like the woman is a bit too high, and maybe too far forward now. Could just be the T-pose throwing me off. I'm taking it in a more crab/insect direction, but I'm not wanting to diminish the 'corrupted humanoid' factor. Some of that will come across in the textures.

There's so much cool stuff being done here by everyone- part of me wants to just chuck this idea and go for something crazier. Anyone think I'm playing it too safe? Is this a competitive design? All feedback is welcome.

Here's a little update. I scaled up the female figure, and pushed her down and back. I'm a lot happier with this arrangement. Also tweaked the legs a bit- thought all those spikes were getting redundant. I think I'll scribble up some different helmet ideas- kinda struggling there.

PLEASE, keep the feedback coming! I know it's hard with so many people competing, but some of us really need advice! :D

    busy, busy indeed :D

This is turnign out nice, I think the placement of everythign is good. The only thing concerning me is the rear leg. It's very thin at the hip, while such legs tend to be quite thick at that point. Just ook at a horse's leg. Thr way it is now, there wouldn't be any muscles connected to move the leg.

If it's supposed to be an arm/leg, the the upper part is too thick, and it should be as you sketched it, but with a nice shoulder joint and pecs and such.

    joolz8000.jpg

Added crappy paintover to clarify my idea :)

konstruct- I see what you're saying....

pestibug- thanks for the paintup. I'm thinking about a combination of those two- some sketches are coming soon.

Here are a few different helmet ideas. I'm pretty happy with the one I've got, though. Not sure. One thing I'm wanting to do is make the head hollow; the eye holes will allow for peeks inside- there'll be glowing magic occult diagrams in there. I'm thinking about having a greenish glow permeating the whole creature, spilling out from beneath joints and muscles...

Here's what I'm talking about, glow-wise. This is pretty rough... don't think I care for the orange tones in the legs. Those feet need some serious work. Still thinking about armor and weapons.

    two swords?
    sword and shield?
    bow and arrows?
    staff?

-I'm leaning towards the bow. I like the idea of incorporating bones...

Just getting sicker every day. Haven't brought in the armor yet, but it'll likely be dark like the helmet. For the weapon I'm going with a 'skull bow'; don't think that'll get done for a while. I'll have a backstory up soon.

I dig alot of the interesting anatomy on this one so far, though the spine from the woman to the creature to a head bothers me. The sculpting is definetely nice, just think the head is pushing it to far, would in my opinion be cool to see it go into a anus or something that is part of the creature, and have the head as a tropy on a rope or such. Or that you took the skull to a full head from your concept, which looking at that again I like it more that way...but I am partial to skulls. Just some crits that you don't have to take to mind, great work so far, and this one is definetely cool.

Thanks guys! Spark, I really struggled with that spine/head region for a while. Hopefully the backstory and the final texture will make more sense, but the idea is that the head and rear section is a living victim of sorts; the rest is a demonic parasite. I'm thinking about making some Norm marine paraphernalia for the head- we'll see.

This is looking awesome. The spine to head deal makes more sense if you look at the top render on the far left of the update before last. It goes into the chest then comes out of the eye socket. Its not as clear in the other renders. Maybe tilt the head back a little more so the spine/tail isn't so bent to get through there. Loving the anatomy so far.

    -begin feed-

    rating: urgent
    target: all personnel
subject: demon sightings /demon abomination /type "Corruption"

Reports from three hellgates; Sirius 5, Regulus 21, and Epsilon B indicate a new form of Demon Abomination, (Stellar Command designation "Corruption").

    Recent activity:
The Human vessel SS Europa II, Hospital class, was destroyed (self destruct) after a platoon of 'infected' troops boarded. (382 dead).
The Cyborg vessel RFS Antioch, Command class, was destroyed (atmospheric entry) when three infected warriors turned. (511 terminated, 201 cortex units contained in quarantine on RFS Albatross)
Likely responsible for destruction of SS Detroit, SS Beijing, RFS Azimuth, and RFS Wintermute, as well as the loss of Outpost M-98.

    Methodology:
The Corruption is summoned by a Demon Lord, often in the form of a chant. Those near the Demon (20m) become 'infected' with the Corruption 'seed'. The seed lays dormant for roughly 24 hours; then the Corruption hatches.

(Quote from an unknown souce aboard the Europa)
"...the transformation is quick and hideous. The victim begins with uncontrollable screaming, they arch their back, the bone deforms and the flesh rips open, first at the hands and feet, then up the limbs. The groin region splits apart, the hips stretching it wide, then horrid teeth tear through, revealing a gaping maw. By now the victim has passed out, but they don't die. Inside, the victim's heart and lungs have trippled, and gills emerge around the lower back. Finally, the rib cage bursts apart and the rider emerges. Usually female in form, the rider's head is hollow, carrying only the magical instructions originally coded in the seed..."

The victim, once awake, is aware of their condition. They are helpless passengers, their bodies mere vessells. There have been no cases of survival or reversal.

Offense: Generally bow and arrow, claws and teeth. Arrows materialize on the bow when the string is drawn- arrows exist in multiple dimensions and penetrate most armor (see below). Teeth infect victims if not immediately lethal. With the bow the creature is an incredibly good shot, rarely missing the head (footage). Least effective versus Machines, fairly effective versus Cyborgs (see below).

Defense: Unharmed by energy, chemical, or bio weapons. Some effectiveness with higher magic has been reported. Projectile weapons have demonstrated to be effective, though tissue regenerates rapidly (footage). Beheading via blade, such as Samurai-class droids, as well as airlock expulsion, proven most effective thus far (footage).

History: Terran Archives Division reports that this creature was summoned by humans in the ancient Americas.

    -INTEL UPDATE-

    BRG.GEN. Rico, SS Vagabond

The Corruption is an excellent shot. She almost always aims for the head, is almost always successful, and 99% of observed shots have been fatal. Several Denebian troops have survived attacks, briefly- within hours they'd gone completely insane, and by the second (Terran) Cycle their bodies had erupted in dozens of tumors, both internally and externally. These tumors appear to be of demonic energies and do not respond to any treatment as of yet. Death follows on the third Cycle.

Cyborgs don't fare much better. The Corruption seeks targets in this order: norm brain, cyborg brain, living flesh, machine CPU. Machines fare best against Corruptions. Machine armor tends to be more advanced, though quantum electronic components have been known to go offline in close proximity to the multi-dimensional energy; this makes several Machine (and Cyborg) units more vulnerable. Given a choice, Corruptions target Norms.

    **Advanced Armor**
Recent advances in phase-shifting plate armor have proven somewhat effective, but help to highlight the Corruption's accuracy. In this footage a Corruption can be seen killing three outfitted marines, finding weak spots smaller than four cm.

Mages on Capricorn Four have been developing an armor enchantment, but a functional prototype seems months away.

    **additional footage**

summary 1; Corruption is surrounded and contained by four Machine Gladiator-class units for four minutes, then dematerializes. Victim's remains are left behind, death follows shortly thereafter.

summary 2; Corruption is blown out airlock on RFS Pong, dematerializes after 30 seconds. Victim not recovered.

summary 3; Corruption transformation; human victim.

summary 4; Corruption transformation; denebian victim.

summary 5; Corruption transformation; Rigelian victim.

summary 6; Corruption transformation; cyborg victim.

summary 7; Corruption transformation; cyborg victim(2).

summary 8; Demon Lord casting Corruption spell against troops on Sparta 4.

While I am hardly a Zbrush expert I think it's something like this

Set your document size (it's in one of the drop down categories on the top left)
    Render -> Best
    Document -> Export

I don't even have Zbrush installed on my machine so I can't check to be sure....

Okay- figured out the rendering issue, thanks! Thanks for the feedback, it really keeps me going.

Muzz- do you mean the overall shape of the front legs, or the recent details? I wanted the details (scale bits) to kinda bring together the Aztec theme I have going on the armor, but I'd agree it doesn't quite go with the body. I might try carrying that style up to the torso from the legs.

Here's the latest- lots of work on the armor. Next up, the bow.

that vertebrae coming out is creepy weird stuff.

Really well sculpted, my problems with this overall come from the proportions and execution on the legs. The styling is a little too different from everything else (and everything else is sickkkk). Their general shape doesn't work entirely either. I think if you can, you should build some armor pieces not unlike the arms, and wrap that stuff around the legs, and add a couple pieces here and there on the back end, and it'll all come together.

Killer piece of work here either way ;)

I hear what you're saying. It's been troubling me, too- actually, this is the second version of the legs, the first was even worse. At this point I'm feeling pressed for time, though. My hope is that I can tie it all together with the textures, but I have my doubts about that. If I have time I'll try something else- armor is a good idea. Thanks for the advice and the compliment.

Javier, Stinger, Scrumpy- THANK YOU! ya know, at this point I don't have many delusions about winning this thing, but I'm determined to finish- and every tiny scrap of feedback I get helps me along the way.

So I'm working on the lowpoly version now, but there's one thing about the highpoly model that I kinda feel I should address. See, um... there's this section, and... it's kinda VULGAR. It hasn't really been prominent in previous renders, but I think I'd better show it and ask the question: does this go too far? Is this going to be really offensive to some people? It's not too late to tone it down. Of course, I'm talking about this massive labial pouch between the creature's gaping maw and the woman's navel.

Here's what I mean. I also threw in a detail shot of the armor, just for kicks.

    blightrider12.jpg

-a simple Yes (too naughty) or No (don't worry about it) will do. See, feedback here really matters, cuz if only two people respond... I'm going for it. :D
