I have to say I'm a bit confused...
"Altering its form before texturing is NOT ALLOWED. Once you are finished with colors and details, you can then pose the head and alter its expression for your final presentation."
So...we cant use any sculpting app? just straight up colormap and crazybump normals?
I took that to mean the provided mesh must be your low poly if you're going to create normal maps from a sculpt.
It's odd how the 3D challenge restricts you to the model provided, whereas the 2D challenge is 'have fun, go wild'. That said, I wish I had the time to join both .
Hey guys!
Haven't posted here for quite some time. Pesti kinda forced me to participate this year Though it's my first dw time.
As far as I got it sculpting (even if you use morph targets in ZBrush) would also "alter" the basemesh so it's just about painting the texture maps and presentation right?
I think you could sculpt a high res version, just don't change the geometry of the low res mesh i guess.
Exactly. Feel free to create a high res in any way you see fit. You get 500 extra tris so if you want gear that is not on the original use those. If what you are sculpting doesn't modify the shape of the sdk or the silhouette then you are good to go.
"team war logo somewhere on the body/clothes, and has the appropriate team colors (gold and black for GA)"
so we have to make black/ green generals?
Last time we just had to have the logo or the color, that was better.
Your entries don't have to be just green and black but they should have some green and black in them. Don't go making the rainbow warrior princess with a greentooth on her necklace but just try to work the logo in and keep some what of a theme going.
yup I was asked to make a base mesh that could be textured or used as a blank for sculpting. I believe the sculpt has to be baked back down on the base mesh for the final though.
Oh and I would imagine that with the extra 500 polygons you are allowed to change the UV's. Without changing the UV's there isn't enough space on the single texture.
So you can't modify the base, but you can pose it after textures are done. Which means you'd have to sculpt/paint the creases for frowns and such while the character is in a neutral position and then pose it and hope the shapes work?
There's actually a lot of people really pissed off over at GA about the fact that you can't modify the base. Anyway, where do we post our entries for this mini-comp here?
If lighting is permitted, how are normalmaps supposed to work?

I was just looking (spying) through other forums to see what we are up against and found it funny that the 3D thread in cgtalk.ru only has work in there that has been posted in our 3D thread.
I can't speak Russian so I don't know if they are just using those as examples or what, just found it funny is all.
3d4all.org are using our Dom War banners, which is also pretty funny.
Polycount is definitely looking to be one of the strongest contenders so far in the war, but isn't that pretty obvious!
okay so i must be blind or just plain retarded cuz the only register button is at the top and its for gameartisans. can u plz post a link to the registration
This is on the first page of this thread, by Rens, and is a pretty straightforward breakdown of the process:
"When it starts, you create a wip thread in the competition part of the forum.
(dont need one for the mini comp, since its not needed to show wip, but its still nice to have one for those)
When its started, you can sign up at the dominancewar website, where you will enter your name, wich forum you stride for, and a link to your wip thread here on the forum. (all those options and info will apear when the war has begon)
When your done, or the war is over, you submit your final piece there. (before the deadline..)"

you can also find the registration info in our contests area under the 2d and 3d minis. Also once at the reg site you can pick what team you are going for. You can only fight for one team this year. No switching until 2010.
i have no intention of switching from polycount team. there are a ton of excellent artist on this forum and i will never change sides. GO POLYCOUNT!!! w00t!!!
edit:^^ totally not about winning. I'm not a character artist and probably never will be, but I figure any time I push myself to compete on this sort of level with a talent pool this strong I'll be improving myself tremendously.
I'm crunching on something at work so I probably won't be able to get to the mini comps but I am totally stoked for the main competition. Hoping we get a sci-fi theme since we had a fantasy theme last year
Apologies everyone but can someone help me with the issue or shed some light on my stupid ass. I'm unbelievably lost
Any link that leads to the 2d mini challenge in order to select a forum team will not work. The only option that will work is the area to join the GA team for this competition. I've been posting wip on polycount since the first day of the mini comp but nothing will allow me to select the final submission page as a polycount competitor.
Any one know what I'm doing wrong?? I'm sure it's something simple, just over looking it...

I'm surprised nobody's complained about those yet, actually. What's going on here, did everyone suddenly become positive or something?

You could alpha them out, though. You could also alpha out an entire mesh and build a new one out of 500 tris
Yay, DomWar!

A few things to keep this organized.
- Please post all wips in there and not in here.
- Please ask all questions here regarding Dom War and the challenges.
Thank you and Good Luck.

I overlooked it at first too, but at the beginning of the threads they posted links to view the final entries or submit them
Thank you Funnky Bunnies for showing me the way to the light, everything is just so much clearer now. Forwaaaaard MARCH!
