You said you brought this over to max to do your normal baking...and I know you are a big pusher of modo... Is there a reason you didnt bake in Modo? Ive been looking into the software lately because of the compareable afordability...also from watching the videos I like how they have a drive to specifically lessen the amount of mouse moves needed specifically, such as the freewheeling and other ergonomic style interface customizations, which really interests me.
anyway is modo not so great for baking normals? I watched a tutorial on the modo version of RTT but they baked a Object space Normal, can modo bake tangents at all?
Well i've never really done anything bake wise in modo, but modo lacks a bunch of other essential tools that any mature baking app has, like ability to set up a cage, or any way besides a material tag to set up smoothing groups/hard edges. Really max's tools are pretty great, as are xnormal's. I just dont view modo's baking tools as anything you would seriously want to use in production. More of "hey we do this too!" slapped on feature(hey mudbox can bake normals too, but i would never want to!).
[edit] Also, the lowpoly is using realtime shaders in max, not renders
Nice model, I thought the concept was sci-fi, looks like a cross between a Desert Eagle and the Magnum Python from Resident Evil 1. Must be pretty painfull to be shot by this bugger, what's the caliber?

It's one of only a handful of automatic pistols. It has 3 or 4 variants. It has a .44 mag, .357, and a .454 Casull model.
Alright, blocking in the materials and colors here, still lots of detailing and such to do.
We've got a badass Max shader here that is being developed by 3ps, but i cant really give any more info than that. Should have some pimps for that sometime soon.
Let's not start sucking each others' c*cks quite yet, gentlemen! This is good, but as you say it has some way to go before it looks like interesting metal. More metallic colour-differences / granularity in the spec might be a good idea!

The metal material looks a little strange to me, it looks ok from the side (though all the dark smudgy paint spots look off and too strong), but from the more first person angle the texture reads as very concrete-esq. Kind of looks like it's "render->clouds + overlay" going on, which gives it a very blotchy weird look. I'm not sure how much stands to change since you said you're just blocking in, but .02 cents regardless.
On that page the texture on the bullet shells seems flat. It might just the spec that needs to be adjusted though. Brass shells are pretty shiny unless they're really old ones that have been re-loaded a lot.
I like the night sights (yeah, they're real to whoever asked), it's ridiculous how much help those or white-dot sights make when shooting, saves so much from eye strain.
Looking forward to see what the detailing pass brings
I don't really understand where you're going with the grip EQ, the wood grain looks really bad to me. Unless it's supposed to look like a poorly made faux wood plastic grip, but that seems like shenanigans.

how many tris in the low?
Would you mind tossing up some wires? I'd love to see how you broke some of it down.
Very slick.
Johny: Just a quick test, will be using the new special shader soon. =D

Sorry to derail, the model looks really amazing.

of course i hate chromed guns in general.
ha ha! have you ever seen the movie "Shooter"?
It's one of only a handful of automatic pistols. It has 3 or 4 variants. It has a .44 mag, .357, and a .454 Casull model.
One of the only weapons in actual existence in the real world that was used in a futuristic anime. Surprising to me haha
HA! Go watch Gunslinger Girl! Tons of real world weapons, used in proper fashion.
and GEoff you lazy bastard! get to work`!!! *cracks whip*
Damn! Nice man.

No no no! Its his cock modeling skills that are unmatched! Them be some detailed cocks...
Great work so far EQ!
A cool effect i got from touching the shader INAPROPRIATELY.

it looks like steatite for some reason
The wood's catastrophic failure at the moment but I'm assuming it's temporary
i dont know if thats just the shadow quality or if its smoothing, but the bottom of holdy thingy part seems blocky
Metal and modeling are perfect.
Did I mention c*ck?
