Unearthly Challenge's start date has been delayed to Wednesday, September 3rd 2008. (A whopping 5 days! :poly124:.)
The goal is for this to be the best environment art competition ever so we're still gathering the final sponsors, prizes, and additional
ya right, Fred would kill me if I spilled the beans
and will need the extra days to make sure we achieve that goal.
While we can't give away the specs or rules for this contest yet what we can do is talk about an underlying theme with this challenge. Just as the original Dominance War was, the very first Unearthly Challenge is going to be 'Good vs. Evil', GameArtisans vs. Polycount.

So was that it? Was that the 'big reveal'? No way! We'll have to wait until September 3rd, 2008 for that.
Suits me, I fuckin love the evil shit, now all we need is some kinda topic/forum where people without a team can group up with others. Still just me and my lonesome so far ;P
Damn that sucks! This is labor day weekend here in the US and we would've had an extra full day of work time available for this...that is for the people who have jobs and can only do these in spare time. Oh well. Shouldn't be a surprise that this was delayed I guess given the track record.

so yeah delays suck, well they do for sure when you get all pumped but I know that fred has a good reason do do so, and face it, given the length of that contest, an extra day at the begining of the contest won't change anything, same with the track record, organizing that stuff isn't easy for him, he's almost alone on that, and does his best to find sponsors to get us prizes and all and if you knew there would be a delay, then there's nor reason to stress about that just relax and enjoy your day off going outside I'm sure you'll be really happy to start on the contest, only a few extra days !

Seriously that has nothing to do with it at all. Just was bummed....free time is never easy to get. I guess it will even out when everybody's rushing to finish on time to find out the end is put off as well for a good week or more.
i'd love to enter.......but we all know how that will turn out....i will get all excited for about a week and then i will get to the point where i'm supposed to texture something and i will crap my pants, roll up in the fetal postion and suck my thumb.
Yikes, pushed right back to my birthday... great to see it back in the good vs evil, it's always an easier and more open approach on the competition. With Austin GDC and the crunch pushing towards it I sure hope I get some time to work on this one.

honestly though, i wanted to take part in this for so long, but now i'm going to be bogged down with school starting, and a few little projects im on.
will see if i can try doing this solo. wouldn't wanna damage anybody else's chances.

And I'd hope there was a way for you (and others) to stick with polycount. Your stuff is great, and it'd be a shame to have to send you away because you're a butterfly-loving treehugging pussy.
Seriously though, is there no way to interpret 'evil' that'd work for you? On the other hand, I understand wanting to do something else without wasting your shot at winning by being disqualified.
I'm applying at lots of places, so chances are I'll get an art test right in the middle of this contest, which is stopping me from entering and that's fucking annoying. I'd have hoped to be in a steady job now, so I could really give it all my free time
Good points Xeno, but I can't help but feel that when you picture evil its lava spewing geysers or purple lighting :P It shouldn't be an issue to fight for the black & green, do something evil, and maintain yours hopes/expectations with the contest.
I'm super excited to see all the info this wednesday. I might be entering with one of my co workers, depending on what the rules/restrictions are.
I tried doing the dom war each year and never really got past the concept stage, important stuff kept popping up in my life then, but now I have a job and not much else to do after work so I don't really have any excuses anymore.
Im down to collab unless they do the collab where its all split up between concept and finals and shit. I want to straight COLLAB. Not work with a concept artist...
