Yay for working sticks! Sucks about the postage stuff though, for the price it cost you to get the happ stuff, could have just stuck with an already working X-Arcade stick
I got slack this weekend and played way too much GTA IV multiplayer didn't get started on my stick. I fail.
Still the faceplate art to do! But the most annoying steps are behind now. The epoxy putty fixing and sanding was ugly as hell, I really thought I spoiled it haha but after wood chipping and painting everything is well again. FUN! Sanwa stick mounted in too!
Looks Beastastic! It looks like you have a plexiglass sheet on top there, is it removable? If so it would be really cool if you could swap out graphics whenever you wanted. Like have a template, and just throw designs on it and run over to kinkos or something.

Unfortunately, it looks like he is making the buttons flush with the plexiglass. That means that the buttons will actually be holding the plexiglass down when things are completely assembled. There's nothing wrong with doing it this way. In fact most people do it this way, it is the best method for making sure that the plexiglass remains stable. But it also means that you will have to unscrew and disconnect the buttons in order to swap out graphics that are kept underneath the plexiglass. Entirely possible, but not very convenient.
Yeah Cody it's just like Richard said - the buttons do hold the Lexan sheet in place. However it's not much of a big deal to unplug stuff out and back in - I don't plan to change the art every week! But it's true that I want to make some art before rewiring the whole thing. Atm the stick is in empty shell mode :P
Lexan is much better than plaxiglass btw, you can work it with powertools, sand it aso without any whatsoever. Very flexible!
Sounds good, pior. And it definitely looks like its coming along nicely! I'm going to have to remember what you said about Lexan. I was thinking about gutting my old arcade console and assembling a new, more convenient controller with the parts. It's just been gathering dust in my garage, and with some of the fighting games coming out this year, I could actually get some use out of it. (also, some of the retro games available would also benefit)
Tell me, how is your button layout feeling? The last one I built I thought the button layout was not optimal. Also, I had a little too much of an angle to it, and it tended to cramp your wrists when you played for too long. Your button layout is looking pretty comfortable, how does it feel? And what angle are you going for?
Yeah, button layout is a tricky beast to get right! If you check that pic http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/piorstick_02-dimensions.jpg
you'll see that originally I had the buttons set up in a 'spread' layout- with the punches slightly more spaced than the kicks. I thought it would be optimal but it turned out to be a bit uncomfortable. I got used to it eventually but decided to fix that anyway. On the last pic I posted you'll notice the jab button hole expanding to the left. (this is underneath the lexan hence will go unnoticed once the art is put up). I ended up drilling all the holes that way - instead of going for a perfect circle I extended them all left and right, capsule shape. That way I can position the pushbuttons to the best layout and adjust things if needed (but that would require making a new Laxan plate if the late adjust goes too far. That's why it's always better to check things before the finishing stage hehe).
Angle is similar to an X-arcade ; I use the controller flat on my desk, while sitting on a chair. But that's because I have a jap stick mounted in. With the happ I had before I'd rather stood up, but in that case I found the angle annoying (but maybe that's because I'm on the tall side)...
That is looking HOT! (in more ways than one, love the illustration) I'm thinking for my future efforts attempting button layouts first on cardboard or some other disposable medium might be a good idea. It's a lot more important than some people might think, especially if you intend to get some solid use out of your stick. Personal comfort for a personal stick is important.
I hear you on the angle issue. My previous cade was a full stand-up, and that definitely affected the comfort level with the angling. If you're using this sitting down, the angle will probably be a lot more comfortable. Another item to take into consideration for the initial design.
Seriously, that stick is really coming together well. Very slick. You're going to be ready for Street Fighter IV to arrive.
Hate to say this, but i was completly uninterested in this project up untill mid point. Thats when you turned on the gnarjuice and made awsome. This is the best stick ive seen....possibly ever....
Heya all, illustration's done ... kinda. It really has a Christmas tree look to it atm, but I think I'll leave it as is since it somehow fits the harsh 90's arcade graphics look. Plus it will be heavily cropped anyway!
And a closeup. That way I feel like that time spent rendering the chrome was not wasted haha
Not sure about the text tho, I might go for a LED display look (DaftPunk...) instead of scanlines.
Anyone knows a good online place to print 2ft wide graphics on glossy paper? Don't really want to go for Kinkos.
I'm a big 2d fighter fan myself, I've ordered a couple custom sticks with sanwa parts(arcade parts they use in japanese arcades). Check out the forum of www.shoryuken.com, a couple of really talented custom stick makers. But be warned they are pretty expensive running anywhere from $100-$300.
Hey it's realy nice to hear you guys are liking it. I have been in a 2D mood lately but I still have to break lots of game texture rendering habits. Like, rendering *everything*. However I think it fits this piece anyways.
On a side note I did a test print before getting it done on super nice expensive paper... and really didn't like it once put on the stick! I think I like the controller to remain abstract, black and mean without too much christmas tree extras. Maybe that's because the print was of bad quality? But I think I'll skip, lesson learned haha.
Yeah CheapA It was fun to put the old school Insert Coin text but in the end I went for something more simple. I liked the nerdy feel of the Capcom text, but its color realy were breaking the hue unity of the image I think.

Sometimes i don't think he's a real person.
My only critique is the way the back muscle connects to the arm more like a pectoral muscle rather than a deltoid would.
And the "Infraspinatus" :P
