A lot of you guys are huge inspiration to me, I have been browsing here for 1 1/2 years now. 95% of what I know about art, I've learned here or at Conceptart.org. It is now time to stop being selfish and to start taking the time of posting stuff. Hopefully, I can give back some of the inspiration I have taken from this awesome online community. Sorry if most of these dont have step-by-steps but from now on, Ill be doing a lot more of those.
On the first one, I much prefer the couple of steps before the final, as the final introduces a lot of seemingly random 'detailing' and texture along with some really garish colours, and it just doesn't work for me. What were you trying to do with those last steps?
I really like your last few environments, though. Very nice
hobodactyl : Thanks, I really want to push my color variation further tho.
MightyPea: I like it when there are some grainy details to a piece, but maybe that balance between crispiness and abstract isnt quite there yet. I am a big fan of Kekai's work and I a still doing some tests to figure this out. So that definitely something I need to work on. Maybe thi piece is missing a detailing pass that will sharpened out those details.
Don't take this wrong, but I do feel like each piece is ......eeeeeeeeALMOST "there" (and I mean that as a point of enthusiasm and encouragement!) I really like your black and whites, but your colors are losing definition. Use color similarly to value. Yeah, you can get nice gradations, but just like a dark gray separates from it's inverse on the scale, the same with hue or saturation is true. Try flattening out your colors a little more at the edges so that there is a distinction between forms. Of course, this depends on where you are trying to lead the eye, but in the first image: his right hand/forearm, sword, and armor seem like they need more prominence. I think as you reference Kekai, in terms of grunge/details, he uses the separation of crisp edges and details from less-important areas that have only implied details.
Hey Eric, I really dont mind that kind of advice , its helping me out. I usually tend to have that spilling effect because I overlay a blur image to give it some color variation but I should definately add Color pass in my workflow to clean out the image. Ill try that out in my next sketches.
I don't come bearing crits of the quality of Eric's, but I wanted to say it's a very interesting thread you've got The vigour and energy is coming through clearly, and a real breadth of ideas (three distinct archetypes in your domwar concepts, I'm happy to do variations on a theme).
I'm surprised how well the bird pic comes together. The head seems more finely rendered then the rest, but ties in fine. The smooth curving shapes at the tail area are the only real distraction for me. They're close to centre and make for some bold lines.
Kary : Thanks! I glad you like my stuff, im still struggling to find my own style but I definately try to make digital painting more paintery and dynamic. I agree on your crit, that area was bothering me aswell but I only saw it after I posted the image.
M3anBONE_sj_:Thx
Vig: heh thank you, I didnt have any intention on the subject, I guess that helped
Heres a mini tutorial on the brush I use and how I use it.
Jesterbox, thanks, I have been sticking with this funky brush for a while, I like also the effect it gives, I use that and dodge on my black and whites to set down the values.
Hey jouste! im glad you liked it.... you know I like what you mentioned about the subject because thats exactly what I want to improve on. I really want my art to communicate something more than just a nice image, I want it to be more storytelling. Its pretty much the impression I get when I look at your work, its very dynamic and looks like there is some action involved .. After analyzing most of my stuff, I think my paintings can be kinda static...
A character swap would be the perfect to give me some insight on dynamic poses. If you still agree to do one, Id love to make the ninja and cat, they are my favorites
Hey really cool stuff man, something i notice is that there is really interesting things in each of these, regardless of the level of polish. Cool stuff.
ahh Jouste, im very happy you liked it...! Just ask whenever you wanna do this again, id love to do another one some time. Drawing your character was a lot of fun, it made me realise how much subtilities go into your character designs. Like those fingers that hanging from a ring XD, that was awesome.
....ok so I just came back from this christmas party and I started drawing swirls in a very drunk/clueless state until I progressively sobered up and ended up with this frazetta warrior guy.
jouste - I really wanna start doing more character concepts but unfortunately work is sucking up a lot of juice, so all I have time for is painting rocks and stuff... I ll stop slacking some time, I promise .
ooohh gez...
I havnt posted anything in months, *slaps self*
if its any excuse I was participating in dominance war.... making 3d ...yeh. so heres my entry:
but Hey I found some time to sketch on my lunch hour again, yay, I was getting a bit too sucked in to 3d work. I am seriously wishing to land a 2d job on my next project. Ill try drawing more this summer so I can make that happen,
Very inspired by the awesome and dynamic nature of his illustrations.
Its the bust for Jouste's BrainShot : Ive tried putting in more detail and posture, character etc...And something many of my illustrations lacked' facial expression.
So thanks Jouste for the inspiration this one's for you, hope you like it as much I like La-senzian!
hey wizo! wow you really crammed expression into your version of brain shot! i really like his face a lot. it seems like you've been doing a different approach with your character pieces, i can't exactly put my finger on it but somehting is definitley different about them.
keep up the great work pal. always good seeing new stuff from you.
Alec3d: thanks! I would recommend checking out JF. Targete's DVD volume 1-2 those are the first concept art DVDs I ever watched, they really inspired me alot.
Jouste: heya! thanks for noticing the style or process change, I think its mostly do to being more patient, trying to draw the lineart more than pushing values and painting as fast as I can.
Heres a quickie for tonight, kind of inspired by the sandwhich form of castle crashers.

Probably because your wolfman is also green.
Very nice wolfman.
And everything else as well.
I was going to say I particularly like your environments but I particularly like everything here. Brilliant style.
