really, really stoked to see how this turns out katz. i loved working with you on the first DW, and i know this one is going to represent a big step forward for your work. keep us posted
Was there a definitive answer on whether you're allowed to use existing base meshes? The general consensus was 'no' but I don't think that came through any official channels.

I only use the basemesh as a start for the concept
The final high and low won't contain any part of the basemesh ..
even though, not allowing basemeshes would be dumb.
Katz, this war is suppossed to push and show exactly what you can do as an artist. Not allowing you to use other basemeshes is a good thing, and helps level out the playing field. Believe me I would love to use any number of other people's concepts/basemeshes/textures/rigs/lighting scenes to make my piece look better, but then it wouldn't be my piece. You can do it without, as I have seen your work..good luck in the war!
Its just his concept, he's no 2d artist so why not use arshs basemesh as the groundlevel base, build up the concept around it and do the real work from scratch. I don't see a problem with using this basemesh for concept sketching there is nothing artistic in building simple basemeshes for prototyping, it's just a waste of time and doesn't show any skills but patience.

How much is painted and how much is modeled in the concept? Its quite hard to tell exactly what your looking at

about 40% modeled, 60% painted

As neox said, it's just a concept and just for time reasons. I did about a few basemeshes in my job and imho it's not artistic
Just saved me about 30 minutes placing vertexes above an anatomy reference.
started modeling, polycount alpha brushes are your friends!
Great start!I love the attetnion to detail.
That chainmail part could become a pain in the ass when you're doing the lowpoly, are you going to alpha it?

Oh come on we're talking here about a basemesh to do a concept, of course arsh has put quite some work into his basemesh, but it's not necessary do a new basemesh just for a concept. He doesn't have to prove that he can model, he has done it several times. This shortcut is just a timesaver nothing he couldn't do on his own, and nothing he should be forced to do for every concept he does.
But however i still think that there is no artistic point in doing a >>simple<< basemesh, all quad, here some loops more, there some loops more, for details, thats it. As you are resculpting and retopologizing it anyways there shouldn't be so much afford in the inital basemesh for conceptional work, otherwise you would miss the point of conceptsculpting.
rollin, yeah it is ... plus it has some cool tools that mudbox doesn't
Manuel: This looks really cool ... although it seems like you're just jumping straight in with this concept... I guess you already decided it's definitely what you wanted to make?

i like it! how long did it take?
thx!

don't know
quite fast, because I wanted to make a cat-knight for domwar3 before the war even started...
used ashs basemesh btw.
This is awesome.
i´m watching you *G*

But controversial I hope you didn't shoot yourself in the foot.

SEKNeox, I was talking about using bases for the model itself, I'm sure there is no problem using it for the concept.

human proportions for a exegerated lion in an armor?
However, I agree, that using ashs basemesh for example a generic male would be an enourmous help...
