hah i still remember the discussions back then. there were more then enough people who believed it. only at further inspection they saw its prerendered
i kinda doubt its an official screenshot. doesnt really show anything special or unique and the edgy shadow on the wall looks a bit unfortunate
The funny thing is, it probably wouldn't look *that* bad if it were not following *that* trailer. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
I really don't know what happened to people (including professional game devs) at the time of the PS3s announcement. They somehow momentarily forgot that games are made out of polygons and believed that procedural hair and fully subdivsion surface, realtime radiosity lit worlds were perfectly feasible.
I still fondly remember the passionate arguments from both sides, aah good times.

hehe i guess we all wanted it to be true

So, hahah, what's funny is, if you have a quick browse through the buzz on the intramaweb (kotaku for example) people *still* desperately cling to the original hope. The newest 'theory' based on some poor fanboy photoshopping is that this shot is actually a poster on a wall in game. Haha, awesome.
Well, I have an old friend who works at Guerilla so i want to be careful. I try use a bit of discretion in general when making comments about games anyway.
Granted the whole e3 presentation was silly, killzone for the ps2 looked like a real impressive game visually. From what little i played of it, it looked pretty damn nice in motion.
so given that, i still want to see a realtime presentation of the game in motion. Some random screenshot probably supplied by a clueless and impatient PR person isnt enough to start another heated debate.
Totally. I mean, like I said above, I don't even think that shot above looks *that* bad, until you put it up against a pre-rendered trailer.
Actually I think Killzone suffered from fairly major technical issues in motion. The framerate was crappy, and the frame dropping LOD animation system was heinous, which gave me little hope for its sequel. But in stills it looked good. I never said Killzone 2 was going to be a pile of poo, all I ever had an issue with was blatantly presenting a pre-rendered movie as in game footage.

We got all that Daz... PS3 can do anything..
haha, not quite, but.. i am surprised at what it can do when in the hands of people who know what they are doing. I cant think of anyone who hated the ps3 more than me until i actually got to make stuff for it, and without saying too much, i am amazed at some of the stuff i have been seeing coming down the pipe at work lately.. given also that we are the only dev that has attempted to release a second generation title in the first year of the console launch, i think we have learned a lot about the hardware by doing this.. yes the ps3 is a bitch to develop for, but what i think this will ensure is that every year the games on the ps3 will look better and better, very similar to the ps2..

no, there's a wall to the left of that guy, and no wall to the left of the player.
it does look sloppy, but this is the first ingame image, give it some time. But I agree with Daz about them really making it harder for themselves with their whole fiasco way back when.
Obviously, this shot is taken of a small widescreen video communication monitor built into a small hand held unit carried by the actual soldiers in game, which allows them to strategically observe the view from another player's perspective. They decided to keep it low res for added realism.
I'll be the first to say, after viewing this screenshot, the gameplay looks awesome! We've only begun to lick our way to the chewy center of the PS3's immeasurable capabilites.
They should of made the first screenshot look waybetter but what are you gonna do looks like its and early build of the game though, imma reserve my judgement until there an actual press release from guerrilla themselves.
looks like someone fell victim to some bad PR/marketing guy deciding to release a shot... obviously if it were the devs themselves, they would have picked a better shot... right?
i think its some really clever marketing the more i think about it.
yes, there is no way killzone can live up to the hype it has created for itself..
but, if they purposely release a shitty shot, and every forum in world goes apeshit cause it looks like crap, then they really only have to make the game appear better than the shitty screenshot, not live up to prerendered movies..
Well you make a good point Arsh and it could very well play into the fickle nature of gamers these days but on the flipside first impressions mean a lot as well and this could backfire and blow up in Sonys face just the same. Sonys not having much luck these days and for a flagship title they should have played it strait and given us something to drool over. At the end of the day its only one screen shot and some cool new screens with in game video could dispel the noise being made on gaming forums so well have to wait and see.
but only the most hardcore sit around bitching and overanalyzing a single screenshot--a much larger portion of players will only see what filters through, say, the next big upcoming magazine article, in which they'll be sure to assemble some better looking shots for. this is far from a potential PR disaster, and even with the hardcore like us, all will be forgiven with a "proper" release.
well, not with "us," since we'll sit around and pick apart every screenshot that gets in front of us.
i think it goes along the same lines as what everyone in the P'n'P section should know: if you have to makes excuses for why you image looks the way it does something is wrong.
true, but you can get horrible screenshots out of the very best looking games. with a big team and a big project, you're dealing with a lot of variable and screenshot control can become a problem. someone dropped the ball with this one, no doubt, but i'm just saying that it's obviously not straight from someone in the dev team. they would know this looks like a steaming loaf of asspudding.
No doubt some marketing/PR push to get some new screens out. We just finished up working on the new installment to Spyro (seeings as it has been announced I can finally talk about it). Yet when it was announced with some screens, whoever was given the task of collecting screens must have been using an old alpha build and every shot they took couldn't have been worse!
So I'm not going to make any real judgement until I actually see moving "realtime in-game" footage, or until I actually play the game itself.

Either way, uhh, the eyes on that guy look pretty cool...
to this
Atleast it looks better than Killzone 1.

there was some kind of a tech demo either at gdc or e3 last year .. but it was behind closed doors...

this seems like a much more obtainable goal

i will now go to my friends and scream and dance the "i told you so" song and dance.
sorry to poop on parties of those who were anticipating this game, and i don't wanna say "i knew it", but i [for some weird reason] had a feeling.
