It's rather amusing to see the various and contradicting views of the xB's new style. Personally, I think it's a pretty big dupe of GM's HHR (much like the Honda Ridgeline is a dupe of the Avalanche)... and in both cases, the original American designed car was called ugly by some... but has sold decently enough that I see *plenty* of them on the roads. And as such, the sales of the Asian counterparts will do equally well, and possibility better due to the assumption that imported Asian-made vehicles are better (hahaha, bet I just started a flame-war with *that* comment ). That aside, it's a good style that will find an even bigger market than its predecessor, though I still like its predecessor for the even more simple design (which lends itself strongly to the mod community).
btw, the offset speedometer is for better visibility. They did it on the Saturn Ion too. It seems odd just because we are used to seeing it through the steering wheel... but that's the problem, you usually have to look around the steering wheel. I can't drive my wife's Montana without ducking my head when I check the speed.
Seriously, I own an xA. Don't get a Scion they are litteraly Toyota Tercels with a different body. Same frame, same engine, trans etc. It's a garbage car. I hate every fucking payment I make on the damned thing.
Yah, the reactions are mainly why I made the post in the first place. I love the xB's, always have.
I'm curious though - do most people in here just not like SUV type vehicles as a whole? Cause there's a lot on the market out there that are just as boxy as the 2008 (not the later version though). Hummers, Ford's, etc. all have hard angles and not a lot of roundness to them. I'm wondering if the later xB's just left a bad taste in everyones mouth e
I'm also aware of xB's relation to Toyota vehicles. I drive a Civic now so is it any wonder I don't mind that fact? The xB is one of the most comfortable rides I've had being 6'4 and upwards of 300lbs and it doesn't come with the price tag all other SUV/mini-SUV type vehicles have.
I don't car for SUVs. I like Hummers, but only the original (not H2, H3). The baby Hummers make me sick/angry. I'm a 4x4'r at heart and most SUVs are just playing to people needs to feel bigger/powerful. IMO they end up looking like tools.
Now I realize that the Hummer is the boxiest of boxes, but that's not it's appeal to me. It's the utility part of it that I like. I'd love to take one of those beasts offroading.
While I agree that the new look of the xB is an improvement, it's still looks like an attempt to throw flash onto an ugly vehicle. But get it if you like it. We aren't the ones making the payment, you are

i know the beauty is the in eye of the beholder.. but that is some of the crappiest interior design/material quality i've seen in a while .. almost crossing over into the Korean/American Brands.
The look of the switchgear isnt bad but the mold shape of the dashboard and the quality of the plastic is just repulsive ..

and whats the deal with the offset speedometer panel... how does that help?

I would imagine its just to throw you off and make it feel different. It means less pieces in the conversion kit for cars sold in the US (wheel and gages on the other side). It also might be in a more natural spot to look than thru the wheel?
Yup, it's in the perfect place. The visibility in the xB is great. They seem to have more room inside than most SUVs as well, those chumps that buy a SUV with no intention of driving off road should buy an xB instead.
whats the point in getting a flashy, maybe fast car, if it's an automatic?
[/ QUOTE ]
i dont think it was ever an intention for it to be a fast car, it's supposed to be an edgy, urban lifestyle car that is practical, economic and cheap.
Besides there are plenty of sports cars cars that are automatic only.
What confuses me more is the placement of the instrumental cluster in the middle. Obviously ripping a page out of the Mini book but doing a rather louzy job at it .. it feels very much an afterthought.

Actually Toyota did the middle instrument cluster with the Yaris/Vitz/Echo which came out the same time as the New Mini

Erm, the xB's were in production before the Mini and they've had the offset panel the entire time.

I'm biased, though, I really never liked the new trend towards boxy cars... the scions being the poster children of that movement
I think Scions are a social experiment to determine the psychological & sociological causes of bad taste.
Fuck all the haters.

Exactly the vernacular I expect from someone who actually likes these boxes of ugly .
I think everyone should get to own a vehicle they lust after at least once in their life
Don't like them myself.
They look like a 5 year old kid's crayon drawing of a generic car. :P
Still, it takes all kinds and everyone has their own taste!
Like stated above, not a personal fan of the design of these cars, but to each their own.
Color is sweet.
Just saw that, you can get one for a buck on second life. Funny way of promoting it, good on them
r.
Just not my cup of tea. I think I would rather have kidney stones again then be caught driving this thing...
But then again I have a 95 eclipse that I have poured countless dollars and hours into just to go a little bit faster.
"ugly" barely covers the exterior, but the interior is also inadequately described by the term "shit"
unless of course it's marketed specifically towards people with a fetish for cheap plastic
it's horrible, take it away and bring back the pictures of dead cats

Yes, they offset because of the steering wheel. It creates a better view for the driver.
whats the point in getting a flashy, maybe fast car, if it's an automatic?
I drive a manual car and it feels great!
