Nice start, but I think you need to nail down the insect look in the body if you're goin for some humanoid insect, because right now he has the body of a gorilla. ...maybe you want that, but I'd recommend some exo-skeleton action!
I really like the head of this character, but the body I'm not a huge fan of. Like ebagg mentioned, very gorilla like. Almost reminds me of a Saiyan in gorilla form with fly head.
Great start all the same, just keep nutting at it.
i think the fly head would look sick on a muscular body but think more body builder and not so much hulking ape. Keep the muscle lean, maybe skewing the anatomy here and there(i invision him with a shorter torso, and longer arms/legs. Drop the large bulky hands and feet. just IMO
I like
first of all, sit back and watch David Cronenberg's "The Fly" for inspiration. after it's over and you get done puking, i think you'll realize where you need to go if you really want to do an interesting anthropomorphic insect character.
notice how in The Fly, while he become progressively more fly-like, his head never suddenly turns into a giant fly's head. granted, that's because he's supposed to be fused 50/50 with a fly, but it's also good design sense.
personally, i think the giant fly head on any body is going to look silly if you don't alter it significantly. a fly has certain proportions because they are best for its scale; if a fly were human sized, there's be no reason to have such enormous (and highly sensitive to damage) eyes covering such a large portion of the head. contrarywise, the mouth is likely to be the opposite: at a larger scale, and particularly as a big mean whatever you're intending him to be in this entry, his mouth would probably get even bigger.
it also happens that smaller eyes, bigger mouth is also generally just good practice if you want to make anything look meaner and more threatening... neat coincidence, isn't it?
and as i've been telling other people--if you give people exactly what they expect to see, their brains turn off. if i said, "draw a guy with a giant fly's head," i guarantee most people would go straight to drawing exactly what you just drew, and that's a common housefly's head. insect species outnumber all other kinds of species by the millions, so why are you going with the one absolutely everyone knows? there are many other flys with heads that are going to look waaaay creepier on a human-sized body, i guarantee you that.
and as per the body, the armor suffers a similar problem (designed by autopilot) and as pointed out, the body shape itself doesn't jibe with the fly head. so sort out a more insectile body, or a more bruteish head.
hope this helps, and keep us all posted on further developments!
as i see an guessed before the mix from head and body is the main problem
so for my personal taste i don´t realy like exoscelettal designs or at least i don´t want to make one for this char.
on the other hand i don´t want to drop the big eyes "baby.. können diese augen lügen?"
but gauss your point isn´t bad.. the head should better fit to the body.. but i realy realy don´t want to make a the-fly like design bc i think the-fly looks stupid.. i´v watched over it more than one times when i start sketching... and on the other hand i realy realy don´t want to make the 1000. lil evil eyes and big mouth dämon.. i could fall in sleep if i see one..
i play today a bit around, it realy should be possible to get the head and body closer together *G*
and for the armor.. the armor should catch a bit of the exoscelettal idear.. the wings are also part of the armor instead of the body ... but this could be pushed a lot more
and thx again.. if we want to win we have to be our toughest enemy *G*
I think you should keep the eyes more evil like the first concept. This recent concept makes the eyes look a little dopey. Keep it up, you've really got a great start.
very cool idea, my favorite silhouette drawing you did is the one in the middle. as far as your bottom concept goes, i think it would look cool with a chameleon style color like you see on cars for the armor, as it stands now, the grey would work, but insects can come in a wide variety of colors, and choosing a vibrant color could add even more style to the peice.
Awsome dude. Big improvement. Id still keep it an actual fly head tho . The proportions and stance, even the armor are definately more fitting now though.
marisa: jap the helmet isn´t final.. but it should not look like "ohhh i´m sooo evil, have fear!"
quaggs: thx.. and the color is not nearly thought of .. i will play with this later on long enough *G*
clint: thx thx .. the head isnt final.. but i love this lil bit stupid helmet idear atm most.. so lets see whats happening
aesir: jap thas maybe true .. but i can´t stand the "oh sci-fi must be smooth and so sci-fi looking". .. we are in a long war and more or less everything was destroyed.. so why not making something more .. primitv.. but jey.. i will push him.. it.. more to a "normal" sci-fi look.. and if it´s only with some funky glowing bits
soooooooo and for this.. don´t ask me what this is.. i´m just making wired stuff atm so i should go to bed *G*
hey thx .. damn.. there are lots lots lots of pics..
but i can´t realy cotton on these asia bug exo spacy spacy armors..
and i´m still not sure if i should make a fleshy face-head or some insect like.. but because you can´t ever see the body naked (wuhaaa) i´m not that bound with my decision, but i think it would be wired to have a exo-insect-guy with cloth on ?!
anyways.. lil playaround with the face.. but i think i will try out some stuff with the fleshy one
I really like the latest iteration on the armour! Massive improvement from the initial concept. The sketch with the head with like a dozen eyes is probably my favourite for some reason.
Keep at it.
Your armour design is great but my eyes are focused on his bright lightning weapon. I think you should make a weapon that looks like the armour. I also would put more of the red in your design.
Maybe a red laserswordthing is a part of the weapon...would cut things much better.
i done told you that the giant housefly head wouldn't fly... wahahahah
ok, puns aside, it's great to see how far you've developed this bugger. very imposing, looks ready for modeling if you ask me. which you didn't. it's ok, i'm used to it by now... sob... keep us posted!
haha.. your cool gauss.. or should i say.. freakayy
and i ask you everytime i post something by default.. i just don´t write it there everytime
and here we go.. the armor is nearly finished.. but no pics yet.. but for excuse i startet to play with the head..
not sure about the amount of the detail you can see on the normalmap.. i don´t want to give the head so much space on the tex.. but the tex is huuuuge.. so i have to test it a bit
I'm leaning more towards 3 and 5 =\ (mostly size related). The huge wings lose his insect qualities and turn him into some kind of [death] angel, the kinds with massive wing spans. How are his wings going to work? If they are to buzz like a fly, I'd think the single-jointed, sturdy ones would work better than the more birdlike wings. I'm not completely sold on any of the designs you have now, though. And I agree with Jackablade on trying on some fly wings.
Awesome looking character so far. You'll figure something out no doubt.
Hard to imagine that one these wings can carry that big and armoured guy. What about some nozzle jet wings with small turbines? Maybe you can also make that chainsaw thing in front of them. Another Idea would be to make fly like wings and a turbine on his back.

so, and now i have to do real work
not very sure what to do.. should sleep over it
Keep on refining

for some really cool bugs and bug armor check out a few japanese stuff, SIC and masked rider, i've done the research for you, here's a link to some of those, i think its like a thread with people posting pics, just scroll through i'm sure u'll find something cool http://robotjapan.proboards12.com/index.cgi?board=BandaiOther&action=print&thread=1104010238

ähhh katze.. : green and orange.. complementär.. ?!?!?
complementär Kontrast
nearly but not realy .. (harhar what a rime )
first idear about the fly-thing-back
and some refining.. not sure about the weapon and effekt.. and the wings are still "under construction" but it´s comming..
but that'S deffinately light not shadow :P
Maybe a red laserswordthing is a part of the weapon...would cut things much better.
and weapon and wings are not fix
Looking good like how this turned out it being an alien insect and all:).
The weapon doesn't seem to fit him much, just for fun a huge flyswatter
the shadow-source are the tube-things on his fore-arms, shoulders and legs
lalalalalaaa

Only thing I'm not totally sold on is the weapon - Guess I'll have to wait and see how that turns out
I'll be watching this one
still so much to do.. but it´s coming
so if you want to choose do it now.. maybe it works
tim.. you will get your details.. i swear
btw.. i´m not sure but i think only the thin/forcefield wings "feel" right..
Awesome looking character so far. You'll figure something out no doubt.
second fit´s best, but i´m not shure about the functionality. I can´t wait to see that wings animated

Rounded off wings seems to soften up his appearence.
but i don´t want bird-like wings.. so i tried out some more fly-like shapes
then took the parts i liked most from the old concepts and now i´m going in this direction
but how should he/it fly?
