well, i think you should count yourself extremely lucky to have Snowfly to collaborate with--he's one of my favorite fellow artists on polycount, and not just because he's so demure and cocquettish in person. get that lazy bastard to get some thumbnails all up in this thread!
lazy bastard enters the thread!!! here's something to kick things off.. just a couple of exploratory sketches. still gotta work on making him more lanky and still retain his heaviness.
These are Freaking Awesome Snowfly, it's like you can read my mind.
I know its a pretty generic idea, but when we were coming up with the idea I wanted it to be an original concept but look familiar at the same time. With Snowfly's talent, I think we can take this kind of soldier to the next level.
Snowfly - My favorite sketch so far is the one on the right in your first post. That's dead on what I was imagining. Can we move forward on that one?
I agree with Struve on this one, that first concept is bad friggen ass! I can't wait to see this one fleshed out more, I love the insane bulkiness to the character.
alrighty here's an update. i was supposed to get started with the detail shots but ran out of gas mid way. so here's the concept art equivalent of a base mesh. these kinds of production drawings are what our CEO places squarely in the "homoerotic" category.
What do you guys think, double barrel or single barrel shotgun? Or maybe even a flamethrower? A flamethrower could make since of the equipment on his back.
I saw it as a bigass iron rod useful for jamming into/through the enemy and their stuff...and that was actually pretty cool. I like his world weary expression, too.
You know, a sad naked guy with a brutal metal arm would be a hell of an entry.
done laying down the large shapes, except for the gas tanks and hose for the flamethrower. pretty happy with how it reads, although it could be pushed a little more. also it's falling into "gears of war wannabe" territory.. must steer clear of that!
Thanks for the Update Snowfly. Looking Great! I think so long as you keep pushing the tribal aspect it will not look like a GoW character.
I figured I could get a jump on the modeling by starting on the obvious areas of the model. So I started on the head. He's suppose to be and older guy, rugged, like the old Marlboro man, but more muscular.
Awesome start! Can't wait to see where this will go. Really nice expression there too, gives him a whole lot of character. And I also appreciate the fact that he actually has teeth behind that evil snarl.
The first time i loaded the page the grim reaper one didn't load, Dang, that's awesome! I'll leave it up to you; you can take the concept either way. I like both, so it's up to you.
OH SHIT!!! Struve that is fucking awesome! Great timing too, I was tightening up the head painting, but you nailed the exact same look I was going for.
Actually I'm leaning toward the death one too. We oughta go for that...space marines and mythological figures is not a combination seen often.
Now then, onto some critical stuff. The original armor you had was cool but didn't really jump out as much as your early concepts did. I like the idea of the cloak over it, and that could leave room for some cool designs, but I think the current design you have now might too greatly obscured the nice armor you already have. The hood of the reaper is an awesome touch though... and I have a special place in my skeletal heart for reapers.
I'd also like to note I like his skin so far - I see some SSS, but is all the work shader work or did you do any texture painting? I like how the recesses have the soft, blue hue.
...thats a pretty fuckin cool head, put some finer wrinkles in there and some poc marks, this guy could be grizzled.
And for the concept, something about how the bicep rolls into the delt is wierd, looks more swollen than ripped.
I'd like to add in more details, but i don't think it would show up in the normal map, other then just noise.
It's so hard to find a super muscular arm that isn't bent or has the wrist twisted, for reference. So, I'm not sure if the anatomy is correct. I just keep messing with it until i think it's starting to look cool.
NICE anatomy on that arm/hand and the face is cool too. I dig the idea conveyed in the concept, so I'm looking forward to seeing this thing fleshed out.
Oh, now look at what I done gone and did. I screwed up the awesome concept work. Help Snowfly, HELP!
Ok, so for the Flamethrower. The back part, I was thinking: 3 tanks, with some straps holding it onto the body with some technical stuff all over it, and rib bones for protection. Obvious I guess hehe. Three tubes feed the body with gas, as if he has it running throw his blood.
And this is the arm part. The tubes come back out of his arm to supply the torch end with fuel.
Snowfly- Now make it look good, my concept and painting skills suck compared to yours.
If you're competing for polycount, that gun/arm design violates our rules (though it's awesome).
We can't have any kind of cyborg-ish stuff, like flesh, melding/twining with metal. A gun mounted on the arm is one thing, but it can't be melded to it.

trying out a tribal/african look..

Thanks!!
I'm liking this design!
Keep it up!
struve and others, feel free to nitpick away.
i'm looking up reference images right now, and i have to admit the idea of a working flamethrower that's embedded in a guy's stump intrigues me.
-oh and struve, i'm about to begin blocking in the armor shapes. i'll send you the PSD when it's done so you can scribble in details on your side too.
-A .jpg would work, if the .psd file gets too big.

A grim reaper variation? yeah why not.it still fits the idea struve and i are working from - armor decorated with skulls and bones.

Some fun gif action...

Cool, let's go with the Death soldier idea, I Love it!!

Thanks for the complements guys. That would have been stinky and messy Quickel,
That's all Shader and lighting, no color map has been added.
The weapon and backpack have me stumped though...
Maybe when you can free up some more time, you can hammer out that flamethrower. For now, this is plenty to get started on.
You Rock Snowfly!

looks fuckin rad, keep it comin

Turnaround...
