i dont know if this will be well received by most of you, i know hawken might like this though.
im study my final year in graphic design and although i do love doing 3d, tbh i stink and i dont have time to improve at the moment, so it would be nice to enter a challenge like this and perhaps do some vector based work in illustrator.
kinda whatever challenge your doing, enter a 2d illustration instead of 3d.
i know it strictly isnt going to gel with the 3d work your all doing, but it adds some variety
I agree with you PeteJ but it would sink like a stone on a 3d graphics forum.
There are some other forums out there that have weekly illustration challenges, I used to partake in the challenges over at eatpoo.com and it really helped fill my portfolio with vector art that I otherwise would not have done. Although that forum is a shit hole and I was actually banned from there, you may find similar challenges on cgchat, cgtalk and conceptart.org
Hawken it depends what sort of numbers you are after..ie: a character for a platform game would obviously differ from a fighting game etc....let me know what you had in mind and I'll ask one of the coders at work. Our current title is going to be released on the wii..

Yes would be helpful if you could get a polygon count and texture count / texture size for one single character. Please PM me the details if you can, of course I'm not interested in breaking anyones NDA but maybe you could get it out of him over some beers??
I like the idea of a Christmas-themed environmental scene with mid-range (Wii) technical limitations. I'm not exactly sure about the permutations on the theme. Doing a "Christmas-gone-bad" theme would definitely be entertaining. (I keep seeing an image of Santa caught in the engine of a 747) But it would also be somewhat limiting. But I suppose that's kind of the point of these challenges. Placing them inside a clearly defined framework is half the challenge.
I fully support a Christmas-gone-bad challenge. (maybe someone could do an environment of a Christmas-themed console launch, complete with line-waiting and violent muggings)
christmas in space is getting my vote currently, keeping it very open.
christmas gone bad implies a scene or a story, I don't think anyone has time to do something like that, turn out would be low.
Christmas in space could be virtually anything. A little asteroid with christmas trees, or santa with a space helmet. Ok well they are the only two ideas I have right now...
Xmas in Space, and Robot Xmas could easily fit into Xmas Gone Bad with a little bit of creativity...and a better title. Xmas Amiss, or Twisted Xmas. Something like that, less limiting. Either way, it's perfectly fine to put a space helmet on Santa, or throw him into a jet engine...if you want to. I'd try for something more creative.
So, I vote we speed things up since Xmas comes but once a year. And some of us go on vacation.
What is after the piggys? SpaceMarine Primarch? (Pre or Post Heresy) Ive got no chance to win such a thing, but i would love to see the end results of it.
How about Star wars Fauna? using the various star wars books and other online resources as refference... only one catch! Can't be an animal that was in any of the 6 movies.
It's a little shindig where we ("We are the champions" background music.)point and laugh from the deep end of the pool while the folks at cgchat wear floaties and dog paddle.
naah I dont think thats how it works man. Polycount needs YOU!
edit: btw if you kick out more rockin concepts like your guitar heroes ones you're sorted, and you'll get plenty of good advice if you run into any modelling trouble
I was going to suggest some sort of environment/fixture challenge and then I had an idea that should please everyone. Model your interpretation of a chess piece, you could model them as the character they represent or make it look like a castle or whatever the heck you want.

There's a lot of room for variety here...
then do whatever the hell you like, within xbox360/ps3/wii spec
i think sticking with: xmas themed scene.

Xmas Amiss or Twisted Xmas. As they rhyme and allow for lots of creativity.

dont wanna lower any "team scores" by accident

I plan on doing this anyway, I call dibs on Johnny Depp as Dream from Sandman and Ben Kingsly as Herr Starr from Preacher.
here's the bigger version.
Its also in the dom war returns thread.
I'm psyched for this one. So much so I put it on the "Things to do this year" list.. ahead of college.
and environments get low turn outs. (except for polycount village)
I got a PM about a decent challenge.
kinda...
