He is not techno enough yet, but this is the overallness.
Hidden in his coat is a red right hand...
We went to see Nick Cave again last week, and I got a few things from "Red Right Hand" that seemed to fit:
On a gathering storm comes
a tall handsome man
They're whispering his name
through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
is a red right hand
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
He's a ghost, he's a god,
he's a man, he's a guru
You're one microscopic cog
in his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by
his red right hand
So there we go. The Bad Seed horned god, re-incarnated. I'll take plenty of Scottish and Irish celtic culture, and once I get the technological angle sorted, I'll continue.
Anywhere he goes he has already knocked down 3 of the 4 walls before he enters. Of course his evil lair is customized for his horns, and I'm pretty sure he could take off his helmet if he felt like being polite? But I really like how big they are and its not like the requirements are "must fit thru normal sized doors".
Rottweilers are scary, and bulky. Not really fitting with the character though.
Wolves are overrated
An Irish Wolfhound would fit, but its not very scary.
A mutant crossbreed?
I'm still working on bringing the god closer to the technosphere.
How about a dog with a gatling gun for a mouth and bullets chained up from his guts?
Or how about dog as sword holder with a forrest of blades standing out of his back?
Or how about just decking it out in simular armor to it's master and say maybe cutting away it's lips?
omfg those dogs are THE most fucking annoying things on the planet. my aunt has one, she is desperately trying to sell it because all it does is crap and pee everywhere.. bark non stop and jump up and down anytime someone comes in the house. a three headed one would be the ultimate incarnation of evil. absolutely.
I've been getting to grips with the material editor in Silo - hopeful 2.0 will have a major overhaul.
Plenty of tweaks, the hands have had a rework. I've also dropped a few polys in places, this'll be the base for the zbrush version, then I'll modify it and rework it around the high poly and knock the polys to 5,000
And some details - reworked the mask a little, and I'll show how it lifts up.
The shoulder guard has added connections to the Pauldrons.
It still looks too medievil, but hopefully I'll get this fixed over the next few days.
in the face, have you thought about maybe getting rid of that bar in the front and putting more teeth? the bar thing looks kind of out of place and unexpected. other than that though, very nice.
Looking good Rick. The face feels quite young, but Im not sure what you were going for. I guess at this resolution a lot of that comes through in the texture. The bottom lip feels like it protrudes out further than the top is my only other minor nitpick!
Mishra - that's a staple of celtic design, and I'll be texturing the back with a comms system,
Good call on the lips Daz - I had just built a generic head to get a starting point, and completely forgot to go back to it. The head shape will be altered depending on the high poly version - I'll shape the LP more afterwards.
Looking good Rick. Overall he seems a tad squashed vertically, it's possible that his legs are a tad small for really getting an imperious, commanding presence.
His horns with those danglies are giving me the impression of a christmas tree, although i'm sure that'll change when it's textured up.
Seems to me that the boar head emblem on the belt could stand to lose a lot of polys, it's way more dense than other areas and most of those polys aren't describing silhouette anyway.
What's the polycount at the moment? I guess it's still very WIP but you should definitely get some more polys into those shoulderpads.
And seriously... brown with green highlights? You're hurting my eyes!
Shaping up nicely though, any idea of how far through this is? Without a polycount and since you just post images with no text, I can't figure out how close you are to finishing...
To be honest, I'm still not sure myself. I know that it's almost there, and when I "get" it, I'll know it.
The polycount is hard to tell, there are 3700 polies in total, most as quads. At a rough calculation I have 5909 triangles - I can certainly cut a few from the head -the eyes for a start:
But I've already cut a fair few from the boar:
I think I can create the ribs from the highpoly, which will knock out about 100 polygons. The center section down the breastplate was for adding the animal heads, but again that will come from the highpoly
As to where I'm going. I dont know. I'm losing the hose - its pointless, and I need to build him a weapon. I was morried about him not looking future enough, but a lot of that will come from the texturing.
Good call on the legs - those have been biggified.
So, I'm pushing him back towards the mad max bikeresque reincarnation of the horned god. I'll thicken those arms up.
Looking good Rick. I'd perhaps make the shoulders slightly broader, and perhaps run the cog design throughout some of the other pieces of armour. Nice edge loops around the face. His right shoulder armour is a large part of him so probably deserves a little more polys, see of you can't transfer some from elsewhere into it. I wouldn't worry about losing too many polys at this stage, why not get stuck into the high poly model and do some normal maps then tweak the count after that. I like the design, looking forward to seeing how the maps look, should make a world of difference.
Mr. Stirling had asked me to have a go at this one; I apologize in advance for my not having incorporated any of the gear motif business; didn't feel right and it's already close enough to established WH40k/Quake-y territory.
i know it's a boring pose/angle for it, but it's about clarity of presentation than overall mood or impact... or is it? The big thing, other than the proportions, is that I changed the antlers to those of a Caribou--the massiveness of those antlers and their horizontal nature just weren't helping to emphasize stature very well. Caribou antlers have a really majestic vertical look to them, while being still fairly skeletal and creepy. Isn't it funny we derive so much of our demonic/skull imagery from the dead versions of often fairly docile herbivores? goats and the like? oh, i made the boar on his stomach a whole lot bigger, tried to incorporate him into the design more. anyhow, like i said, hope this gives you some ideas.
I'm working on the model at home and at work. here is a work update of the leg:
It's got most of the shape from the new Gauss sketch. The white bits are hard ceramic armour, and the brown is the leather base and the flak padding. I'll update the materials to make that easier to read.
The flak pads are getting 2-3 buckles that keep them in place, that will also break up the outline in a 3/4 view.
At home the helmet has been updated and the new horns added, and the shoulder pads rebuilt, and a new boar is in place. I'm at lifedrawing tonight so there probably won;t be another update for a day or 2.

I guess celtic horned god reincarnated!

Actually, it looks like he's still working on that 'reincarnated' bit
Well, my curiosity is certainly piqued.

Red Right Hand works very well as a backstory too
The horns might be holograms too - otherwise he;d not get through a door.
did you draw a cock on the dog then scribble it out?
At least you have your concept down , more than can be said for me.
Keep it up!
Head, helmet skullcap, visor. The visor rotates by projecting outwards about an inch, then flipping back.
The concept is still a WIP, but it is getting much closer to something I am happy with.

Otherwise, lurvely stuff Rick. Top Notch.

Just crossbred it with something to beef it up a little.
Like this happy camper:
Get his whites showing and his mouth foamin!

Attackdogs, could be something here.
Holy shit!

How about Cerberus?
Jody
That's no yap dog... it's a yapyapyap dog!
Though that hairless dog is creepy as hell. Maybe a three-headed crossbreed of that plus the Pomeranian?
Or how about dog as sword holder with a forrest of blades standing out of his back?
Or how about just decking it out in simular armor to it's master and say maybe cutting away it's lips?
Update. The upperarms will be thicker/bulkier. The big shoulder pad will only be on that side, the other gets something different.
New concept is done, just need to figure out a few details around the things. I can still build the rest of the mesh though.
No idea on polycount yet, that'll be worried about later.
does he need all that cloth to hide his helmet though?
Job done

just wanta know what those alpha planes are on the hornes
Make him a huge menacing dude. Smaller head. Broader chest and shoulders. Longer legs maybe.
Anyways, I'd just suggest some tweakage.

Cheers, that's exactly what I needed. its just pushed it in everyway. Expect to see the updates very quickly (of course, I'm at work now).
Shifting the boars head up works great, the fur around the belt area breaks it up, and the new antlers make the whole thing read better.
Swapping the shoulder pads was a great idea too - it'll protect the correct side.
