WhiteEagle, I hope to finish the modelling on the second guy as well, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the texture done in time. Gauss's critter takes top billing in this contest.
Well, I think he's just about done. Got all the details I wanted down, and I'm only at 4856 triangles. Some of those will be used for alpha-plane stubble, but if anyone sees something that needs some poly-lovin, I'll apply it liberally.
ahahah... grosssss. i know i designed it, but i can't help but think "bundt cake anus" when i look at the excretory launcher, and you've got some great (disgusting) folds going on in that area. I'm sure you'll be able to attenuate the colors to your liking, I already dig where you're going with the face/underbelly. Keep going, this one is on track!
Gauss, I changed the yellow simply because painting on a really saturated yellow was defeating me, so I threw a fit and desaturated it a lot and sort of liked it. I might go back and make it yellow after I get the rest done.
Not sure about the orangy/brown sacs, but i didn't want them to be just blue.
personally i think the new yellow looks great--my main inspiration was exotic varieties of frogs and other ampibians, but with some very bullfrog like textures in places (like those toughened front leg bits). some texture overlays might be in order to really set off the final texture, but then again maybe not, it's been a pleasure to see you work up the texture
With no normal or bump map, it won't shine properly at all unless you put the wrinkles in the spec map, too... which would make them look even MORE fake than painting them on the diffuse. At least, that's what my experience has been with many of the high-poly models I've done.
Ugh. painting has slooooowed down. Here's another shot. I'm really going to have to go in and play with the levels once I finish. Saturate and darken it a lot to match the concept. Pale yellow parts will be changed to match the face.
Thanks for all the comments! No normal map, no spec, no bump. All this baby is getting is diffuse.
The top looks like some type of weird squeeky bath toy. Can't wait to see this finished. Though I wish you could give it a real specular level versus a texture simulation.
haha! very nicely done Sectaurs, it's really been a pleasure to watch this come alive. Some overlays and "post processing" will tie the skin together, right now the color areas are looking maybe just a little too disparate... but the detailing is really juicy. yes, that's the word. Juicy. love what a creepy looking mug he's got going on... and I'm also quite keen on seeing what you do for a victory pose/base. keep it up!
Cool work, always interesting to see that what people can do with "just" a color map. Will you do a reflection map and a specular too? There are quite a lot of suble simulated reflections and eyecatching metal-like highlights in the concept. I think that you would get an even more solid entry if you include all the different skin properties that the concept contains either by additional maps, or as by overlays as gauss suggested.
Yeah! That's absolutely terrific, Sectaurs! Even with just the diffuse map, you've created several gross and believable surfaces. Old school texturing at its finest!
One thing that's kinda buggin me about it is that there isn't much color variation in each section. You've got some sweet detail going, but each section is primarily one color. Mixing some of the other colors into different sections could add some interest as well as help tie it all together.
Great tip from Soccerman there. I'd recommend adding more saturation and shifting the colours in the highlights, especially on the greenish sections, the highlight is looking a little washed out and powdery, which doesn't seem very natural to me. Throwing some more saturations and shifting the colours in the shadows would also help too - using the Image -> Adjust -> Color Balance menu is great for this, since you can tell it to affect highlight or shadow ranges, and just tweak until you get a nice base shift, then paint more into that, rather than painting lots over again.
I think some more of those little sharp bright highlights around the mouth and teeth would work very well too.

Shimmer, we all know you love the design!
update with his walk-abouts
Next up: Texture!
that's one good lookin' alien beastie alright!
nothing but good old diffuse map
Really sharp work man, cant wait to see more on the face :]

Today's update:

Love the surface texture it's getting on those green bits... very nice.
Heh - I slay me...
I toned down the green immediately after taking these, but was too lazy to get new shots.
All renders are with texture at 100% self illumination.
Keep your comments coming, I really appreciate them all!
Juicy anus for the win! \o/
Maybe a bit more contrast, but man, I think you are there.
I think some more of those little sharp bright highlights around the mouth and teeth would work very well too.
Shaping up very nicely though, keep it up
If you're going for the disgusting look, why not have some ooze dripping from his mouth? His face looks a bit clean.
