Just to show I'm still on this fellah; here's a shitty render from Rhino of the Tripod. Not finished by any means, lots of bolts and stuff to add. The legs are linear actuators, driven by a battery stored in the hemisphere.
nicely done, i've been following this thread for a while. as Daz stated, you've really got a knack for renders and materials. that tripod has had more thought put into it than ol' krang-y might deserve, but i'm really looking forward to seeing the whole thing finished
Yes, the quest for good goo can be a long one... as many 'Poser' artists have strived to achieve with their many attempted tentacle-porn images. Strived and failed. :P
great materials, but the face,
well i don't know.. here's a few images of krang.
as you can see frm the images, he always got those 6 teeth i the lower law, and on a rare occasion shows the 6 in his upper jaw as well.
the eyes are closer to the mouth, and also closer together.
The teeth will be reworked. I mainly modelled him from memory, so stuff like the space between eyes and mouth are not true to the original design... call it a homage, aye?
I might try to tweak it in to shape like that though, it adds some character.
I tried tweaking the shape a little. The eyes are causing problems though, I might have to FFD the whole thing.
We'll see. I dropped the amount of teeth.
Here's a clay with the tripod and the latest Krang.
I'll most likely lower the tripod a bit to even out the proportions.
I think if they were to make another Turtle movie, and include Krang, I think he'd have more teeth like sevenfinger's model. Cartoons are the best reference since they are meant to be drawn quickly. I think this model is an improvement upon the original cartoon
Edit: D'oh, you posted an update when I replied... nice work. Seems like his base should be a little wider though.
Naw, no more changes to the model. It's locked due to UV-maps and textures and so. I might try narrowing them down a bit, we'll see. I'm quite fed up making changes to the actual model
As for rigging, I'm a complete retard when it comes to that... I can manage the tentacles, but even that is stretching it a bit.
Second of all; a huge thanks for all comments and crits!
Third;
I've been getting loads of complaints that the eyes lets the piece down as a whole; so I spent the past 4 days doing research in medical books on what the hell eyes consists of.
I managed to simplify the eye a little bit; but it's not a coarse representation as most of the tutorials on the web shows.
The model has all the major components of the eye, except the Conjunctiva, which is a mucous membrane that covers the front of the globe. I wasn't able to retrieve an IOR-value for that, so in the end I skipped it.
I'll have to krangify the eye now, and add it to the model.
When I'm finished with Krang I'll write a tutorial how I went about making the eye. Should be fun.
cool improvement! they look less like marbles and much more deep and convincing. Although the old ones were still cool . Actually with these eyes something clicked and I heard his voice in my head cursing the turtles and waving his tentacles about.. I definately like the whites white rather than yellow. The old eyes make him kind of randomly psychotic, but the new ones feel a bit more intelligent and malicious.
i think its coming along nicely, can't wait to see the tutorial on the eyes. I really wanna see the tutorials you have been reading, they have obviously been working for you.
when i saw this thread when it started i was not impressed, but now, i am mad impressed, the model is ace but the sure winner is the material, beautiful, i completely love the new eyes, i think the human eyes make him look even more creepy, i'd leave them as is
the eye looks cool, but i would throw some noise in the bump chanel in the area that isnt the lens. this disrupts the surface and makes the reflection more realistic. check this pic for an example.. http://www.this-wonderful-life.com/close-ups03.htm
the lens is the only part that really has a flat surface the rest is just vieny surface of the eye covered in liquid.
Woah, Amazesness! Gotta love when people in my generation have grown up and from nostalgia make cool things like this, hehe.
Great one, sevenfingers ^^
Tried the orange eyes, couldn´t get them to look good, so I dropped it.
Lip syncing is out of the question with this fella unfortunately, but some day I might redo him with a better basemesh and some mudboxing, time will tell

Or you could knock out a quick, lip-sync friendly mesh with the topogun beta and transfer the details
Hehe, not trying to harass you. It's awesome. Are you planning on making the full body thing, where Krang sits in the belly?
hey looks nice man, i was woundering what you used to render that with, the lighting is really nice to, im really intersted in high poly stuff and i know lighting and rendering is the key. Any info helps thnx : )

I had to cut out the fancy materials to render this in a decent time... hehe.
Arshlevon: That sounds like work... I'm sooo lazy.
I'll try to whip something up after I'm finished though

Thanks!
I decided I wanted to see him in colour with the tripod. No textures on the tripod yet, just some basic shaders. I have to uv-map it first (eeek).
Here's the latest update; a tad overexposed, but I'm not waiting another 16 hours to render again
(I still think the base needs to be wider though :P)
Gotta love the silly oldschool tripod.
Are you planning to give him the more funtional tenticle-ends? like:
Also, you definately gotta rig the face and get that krang devilish grin goin on!
As for rigging, I'm a complete retard when it comes to that... I can manage the tentacles, but even that is stretching it a bit.
I'm defenitely gonna need some help with that.
Front page indeed! I think he deserves a little glory
Lovely materials and lighting especially. The whole piece is great

Didn't have time to redo the texture maps; I wanted to see him with new eyes

C&C appreciated of course, I don´t think I´ll change it if there´s no major error though.
Thanks guys for the help!
The only thing I'd change is that it needs tits.
