Hello
I started school for animation. I'm an extreme newbie. I have mild experience with digital art in general.
The school I'm going to is providing the equipment and software for the degree. The degree is pretty fast paced where it's a class a month. I just finished the first class which was just about like starting to network. The software they will include is Maya, ZBrush, Adobe products, Unity, Unreal, etc.
Honestly, I'm just trying to find a place where I can mingle with people who have more experience with these softwares. After checking out CGSociety, I saw someone suggesting that here will be a better place.
ArtStation: jessicansalinas
CGSociety: jsalinas
My profiles are bare for now until I seriously start working on projects. I only very casually did art here and there.
I made a Twitter for art related stuff where I linked to my Facebook page that has some old artwork I found if interested: jessicansalinas
But seriously...
What advice would you give a new animation student?

Do not rely solely on school curricular and pace if you want to be any good at the end
A little list of things that you at least check if not learn by heart
= read animation and wiki section of forum
= gesture drawing
= rigging [dl any and all few rigs and learn how they work ]
= learn how to do cycle animation
=learn how to analyse and break a shot [dl bunch of refs videos]
= animator survival kit [there are vids accompany the book ] + any of old disney animation book
= check any other online materials and schools like animation mentor
= master graph editor !
= advance -> biomechanics and acting
You should be able to do this in your sleep !
Was about too recommend The Animator's Survival Kit and Animation Mentor but was beaten to the punch : )
So I'd seriously suggest taking note of @carvuliero's post plus as an aside, four weeks just spent on learning how to network?!
when one could basically dive into these for free - https://polycount.com/discussion/181999/game-industry-career-resources#latest
work your butt off, regenerate a new butt, then work that one off too, then get kinda burnt out because the pay is not great, and become a crypto bro.
oh yea don't send the wikipedia article link of Blizzard controversies to the Blizzard recruiter during your interview when they want to hire you if you want to make the bigger bux
Thank you so much.
I do know the textbook they will provide is The Illusion of Life. Just looked into the other one you suggested too.
I think I will definitely look more into your suggestions before they actually start teaching about animation (in a couple of months).
body movement study, and alot of network
