I've watched a lot of Gnomon tutorials on different topics (modeling, texturing etc.) but the understanding you get from books is simply irreplaceable. I read this book not long ago "The Pushing Points" By William C. Vaughan and I was stunned with the clarity of the information and how easy it was to absorb everything mentioned in the book. I'd recommend reading it btw, it explains how to deal with every possible topology problem that may exist. So do you guys have any recommendations on books related to UV Unwrapping? Thanks in advance!

In addition to link posted, I recommend using one of the freebie meshes in content browser which are already mapped, then make some textures for it. Apply the textures back in maya, and then play around with the uvs. Things will start clicking quickly.
Also, watch a few hair card tuts and then make your own. That helps too.
