If you just want to copy work files on another disk then https://www.freefilesync.org/ It does more then copy, it sees what is new and updates it on the target drive. No muss no fuss.
Always use an offsite backup as well. You could compress it, or only copy over completed projects without the project files, and use free space on Google Drive or Dropbox.
These are all really cool ideas. I managed to untick an option in Google Drive that stops Drive images (like references and normal maps) showing up on my phone. Since then, I put my live projects on a 100Gb Google Drive which is super cheap, keeping hard copies of older projects on an external.
How do you manage to sync the same folder on 2 different PCs with the new google drive ? I chose to sync my project folders that are on my external hard drive, did this at my workplace, when I installed it at home and set it up to sync the same folder it uploads the same stuff twice.

Don't know if I make myself clear.
I don't know specifically about google drive, but it probably sees the folder you are trying to sync as new files. So you should have 1 computer sync with google drive first, and then sync an empty folder on the other computer by downloading stuff from google drive and then it should be in sync with any changes.

they don't cost too much and are easy to set up (at least synology ones)
the cheaper ones start at a reasonable price
