File management

Hey guys, I was wondering how people manage their assets whether its models, brushes etc. For instance do I put this banana in a food folder.... or a weapon folder. I`d love to know any sort of hierarchy or extra programs you use to store assets.

I have a folder called "work"

Inside that folder are individual project folders: "Potato" "Gun" "Trex with hat" "Bottles"

Inside those folders are more folders. "Meshes" "textures" "baking" etc. And I tend to put my Maya scenes in here as well. If I need to have backups or whatever, usually I'll just tack on _01 to the end of the scene name. So, "Mime_In_Florida_01.mb"

Works fine for me.

Don't forget to put that in the proper subfolder: \TESTjuneAlternateRIg\

@pompomstu Try to stick with a standard hierarchy, relying on software to do that for you is nice but doesn't really help you in the long run, especially if for some reason it fails or you can't use it anymore.

I work in Blender, and I really hate Blender's file load/save dialog, so my filenames start out with something like

NewShapes.blend

and just to get the dialog to pass faster I just type gibbersih because I can't read the damn thin little editbox for the filename and I don't want a conflict with an existing earlier file and I don't want to unclick the confirmation box in a rush since it's so easy to do, so eventually the filename after 10 Save Asses becomes:

NewkhhhShhakygjfpggejs.blend

This only started happening from 2.5 on. Earlier Blenders I had used progressive numbers for filenames because the interface was brighter, bigger and readable

call all you files like 'final version' then yuo will have final version 01, 02 etc

I call some of my files rude names like shitcracker 01,02 etc , as that model was turing out really bad.

generally though i keep my naming stuff simple. hate traversing multiple folders
