Hi everyone, new to polycount here Here's a few examples of my work, as well as what I'm working on the moment.
and here is what I'm working on the moment for the Artstation challenge 'Beneath the Waves'. I want to go for a sci-fi feel but still communicate that it is underwater. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, I've been struggling a bit with it and need some fresh eyes to take a look. Thank you!
So I did a very quick paint over I really like the lighting and the perspective. I would push the scale of the creature. I would also make the ship going the away on the side didn't seem right unless it was barrelling left quickly which you can show tilting the ship and the streamline. You have put a great perspective but unless it is like cubes like oblivion spaceship you need to busy it up. I just made simple lines but as you can see just breaking the smooth of the wall gives it more interest and also help with scale. you could add more photo reference search industrial photos or just create unique shapes of our own. I added a simple element on the bottom left where you have right next to the camera, here I would add some detail of what this area is. If it is a civilisation or ruins, Just detailing something in front and then repeat this further back will create scale and story of where this place is. To get it more underwater feel, there is always barnacles and plant life everywhere in the see. SO you can put that on the bottom left or on the floor and on the pipes. Look at the reference to see how they organise themselves. I would add some fish above and below and even something recognisable like a hammerhead shark. Will also give the feeling of scale.
Hope this helps. cant wait to see what you make up.

Thank you so much Haybie, really appreciate all the feedback and overpaint! I'll try my best to take into account everything you've said and post again soon The only thing that's confused me slightly about your explanation is about the ship tilting. But either way I feel like I've learnt a lot and can take the piece a lot further now
some nice pieces you have! I enjoy your brush work. I especially like the rusty looking slum. Keep the good work coming
Thank you! . . Here's an update on the Artstation challenge painting, still got some bits to work on but hopefully the overall composition looks better now. Any other crit is appreciated, and thanks again to @Haybie for the overpaint and advice
Unfortunately I didn't get round to finishing off the Artstation challenge but here's what I've done for the third keyframe. I've been feeling slightly stuck with the underwater elements such as plants and fish, and incorporating a focal point into it.
#15 Mase Masatoki Definitely want to get into doing more vehicles, had fun playing around with the lighting a bit. First personal piece of 2018, hope everyone's new year is going well!
Been doing some sketchy virtual plein air studies recently, been very helpful to work out foliage more which I want to improve on and super refreshing painting stuff with lots of sunlight!
