We don't know what happened. Paul has been a pillar of the game art community for more than a decade, and I can't even comprehend the industry without him.
Holy shit I was not expecting things to get this real on a tuesday night. I remember first seeing Paul's work in the old photography thread on here when he was shooting in Seattle and my jaw was on the floor - an ongoing trend with every time I would see some new artwork he'd made. He's been a huge inspiration for so many people here (myself included) and I feel like the world is a lesser place not having such an inspirational individual around.
Peace and Love to his family and friends. Paul was such an inspiration for me. Far and away one of my favourite 3d artists.
His twitter account has been closed so I suspect his family might be wanting to take down some of his social media presence. With respect of that in mind I'd like to link to some of his work here:
I heard the news just now on Facebook, and decided to log in here to pay my respects. Great artist and all around great guy - Polycount is the lesser for his absence.
I haven't been active at Polycount for a long time now, but I just saw the news on Twitter and I'm completely shocked and deeply saddened, and wanted to post something.
Many years ago, I remember having Paul's portfolio site bookmarked on my bookmarks bar. When I was teaching myself hard-surface modeling, I'd look at his work whenever I was discouraged and it just awed me.
My deepest condolences to those who knew Paul. I wish I'd had the chance to tell him what an impact his work had on me.
Aw man. He was one of the first 3D artists that got my attention and the first one that showed me how far can you really push the composition for hard surface. It's a really weird sensation hearing the sad news.
Gob Smacked. I didn't know Paul but I've followed his work for god knows how long. Such inspirational work.
I've had this as a desktop for as long as I can remember. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/qNR . I always looked at his work back then and my mind just could comprehend the amount of work that goes into pieces like this. Then he started using marvelous designer and I was like "wtf!......." *Mind blown!
A true pioneer of hard surface. Will be missed greatly.
Wow. That's really a shame. He was a fantastic artist, and seemed like an awesome person as well. He'll be missed, and his work will surely continue to be an inspiration for many, for years and years to come.
About 4 years ago, Paul was one of the first people to reply to me on Polycount. He gave me some critique and advice on a Tank I had made for a Uni assignment.
I went through his posts and threads, and onto his site. The hard surface stuff I found there caused me to choose my Uni modules around environment and hard surface art. I did my final year project heavily influenced and inspired by his Scifi door experiments. I found what I wanted to do in the industry becuase of a simple comment left on a thread years ago, and now I'm working full time doing a job I love as a result.
Deeply saddened by this. I'd look at his work and always get inspired and rejuvenated when I felt unmovitated. It wasn't even to long ago I was at work and was looking at his work with a few friends saying how we weren't worthy.
A few months back a friend had a medical emergency and didn't come back to work, thankfully he's recovering now, but it hits you hard when you sit next to someone almost all day and something tragic happens to them. I didn't know Paul personally, but it feels the same way, we're all artists who want to make the things we love, and even if it's posting your own work on artstation, or helping with critiques here on polycount, someone will find value in it and feel inspired.
Had to say that to lift the weight off my chest, I guess my point is that everything is unknown and anything is sudden, I appreciate all of you and all of your work. RIP Paul!
Worked with Paul only briefly at 343 Industries and didn't know him well, but he was a gigantic, rare talent and an inspiration. So sorry for his family. Man what a blow.
Terrible news, was such a shock to read about this. Condolences to his friends and family. Most people would be thrilled to make even a fraction of the impact that Paul made on the industry.
I vote that we somehow manage to bring his memory to NASA.
Imagine how it would be a little homage to Paul by them, a facebook post, anything, to get his work and legacy closer to anyone as fascinated with the deep space exploration as he was? I think he would be happy...
i can't really process it, i only met him a few times when he was working here, he was a great guy and so amazingly talented. I hope Paul's family and friends and the team at system era are bearing up and taking care of one another
Damn his work was my inspiration to start and chose 3d as my career choice... May he live on our memories as the great artist he was. My condolences to his family.

When it comes to hard surface you can't get much better than this.

I think he started this for a Polycount vehicle comp. Giving Tor a run for his money.

Some of his polycount links are broken, but I found his lunar lander by google image search.
Goodbye from a kindred Paul.
Best wishes to his friends and family !

So this hit me pretty hard.
Goodbye Paul and thank you for everything.
My condolences to his friends and family.
My thoughts go out to the team at System Era as well.
As a member of a small indie team myself I can't imagine losing one of your own.
RIP Paul.
