Hey guys! I'm doing a little livestream at 12:00 PM CST. I'll be painting a scene in the theme of the competition. Feel free to jump in, chat and ask questions!
I love seeing everyone's progress so far, can't wait for all the final submissions! Update on my entry. Almost done - need to add interior shadows and some lighting, since I have a little animation planned!
Feel like I might be going off the deep end a bit but it's still moving forward. Will finish up my hunter, work on some coloring and lighting a bit, and then move on to some animations......
@Joebewon Man, that thing is looking nice! Really like all the characters. I think it would be kind of cool to have some glow on the neon sign and have it flicker
@9thKnight Thanks man! Yeah, I've got some nice lighting planned and animation in the works! And I haven't played a lot of Destiny, but really looking forward to seeing your next update! :pleased:
@9thKnight thanks. really hard to like my own pictures as i always regret not doing more or seeing flaws. with regards to making videos. most of the video is made days after I've finished. i will save multiple .hxl files (backups incase i have a crash) as i progress. mostly I'm just zooming out of a layer or revealing layers using quicktime on mac. i cannot record all the time on my ancient mac with onboard mobile graphics. it'd blow up or slow to a crawl. I only record 720p at a maximum of ten minutes and throw away a lot of files because my hard drive is permanently on its last 50GB. give it a try revealing your layers one at a time
@GrimWillows Nice, that's a good idea.... I understand exactly where you're coming from. I'm never satisfied with anything I do. A friend of mine told me once "being an artist is constantly being between narcissism and crippling self doubt."
Woo, almost done with Child of Light. Gonna clean up a few places and get the animation in there. Thought of making a companion for her, but I felt that the other characters were taking focus away from Aurora.
With this almost done I can focus on the entry I really wanted to do - Bioshock! I have been doing the block-in in Maya while I figure out Hexels. But I think I'm almost happy with the composition. And mostly I want to do this one is Hexels since it'll be much more "cubey" than my COL piece. Dont worry, there will be a Little Sister and a Big Daddy in here!
@DavidAguero Looking nice! Really like your lighting. And with the angle and style it actually feels like the original fall out. Looking forward to seeing more of this.
@gael Good start, I think your glows are giving a nice feel to the piece. What game are you referencing?
Adding some more details and tweaking some shadows. Flipped the entire scene! I think it works better this way. Also works better with how the set up of the Tower Hangar actually is. May try some animations this evening. Thoughts? Critiques?
@9thKnight Hey looking good! I think flipping was a good move. The only problem I'm seeing right now is that the object in the character's hand (sorry, haven't played this game) looks as though it's in the BG with the hangar and ships, probably because of lighting and placement. Maybe scoot the character over to the right more so there's less confusing overlap? Really love how you've handled some of the rendering tho.
@LenasTeapot Thanks! It's called a ghost, it's a little companion robot . But I think I agree with you. It's overlapping the one space ship behind it and kind of getting a bit in the way.... I'll play with that, thanks!
@9thKnight tbh the ghost made sense straight away to me. maybe it helps if you know the source material. i can understand that it's hard to aim at an audience that might not know the source material. a fine line that really needs and independent opinion. Spheres are really dificult - the traveler looks fantastic imo.
@refraction Looking really nice! Plan on animating that water? It'd look nice . I might add in some lower ground foliage in there maybe....
Thanks! *Edit* - Had to try animating, updated my submission
Love the variety of entries! I liked the style of the broforce entry, I thought about revamping mine to be blockier like that but decided to commit to what I had.
@GhostDetector Really like where you're going with the pokemon design. Are you going to add a couple in the scene? Have like a Lapras on the water or something?
@refraction, that Ori piece is looking so lovely! The animation looks really nice.
@9thKnight: I can definitely tell you're working with Destiny, and I like the flipped version. The main thing I see is that it's a little hard to tell the difference between the foreground and background, maybe there is some way to bring the character forward and separate them from the background a little more?
@bcarter Thanks, I completely agree. I'm not sure what that best way is. I brought a shadow gradient from the one side to darken where he is but they are still blending. I'll try to separate those better if I can.
Here's a character I am working on. I'd like to know whether or not it is accepted as a Hexel art. the character's main form has been done through iterations of parts (head, tail, legs, body, etc.) in Hexel. Then I used illustrator to puzzle my way through a decent form of the character. Finally, I add details, light, etc. in illustratror (the crest for exemple). I have been working on several iterations in Hexel for characters and this is a solution that could be done entirely in Hexel with one tool : a pen tool that constrain itself to the border of the current grid. Right now, I jungle between Hexel and Illustrator to do so, is that okay ?
thanks for giving this opportunity to do more Hexel art, can't wait to show you the completed piece (time is kinda running out ahah)
@gael I'm pretty sure that qualifies! As far as using Illustrator, they said in the rules that other software is acceptable, but hexels must "play a predominant role in the final visual design". Which is a little subjective, but seeing your character, I think you're probably on track.
@GhostDetector really diggin the pokemon scene! you could throw in some people and some pokemon in the water and I feel it would really give it a lot of charm! also, how did you go about getting those nice gradients on the trees? lookin forward to seeing your next update! :pleased:
Hi,Hope it is not too late, was pretty busy so couldn't start earlier and I wish I have enough time to complete this.
I will be doing Trigon's Prison from DCUO, treat it in a isometric view.
Had some practice with the software.
I will be glad if someone would tell me the move tool(photoshop) equivalent here?
@namo Hey! Looking good so far. The move tool will work when you create a selection (in any of the given ways) then click and drag within the selection. Took me a while to find that one too....

Yep, that's correct! We're working on making this a little more intuitive and PhotoShop like for the next update.
@Joebewon Trees are a separate asset that I shopped into the scene. First I used the noise fill from hexels and filled in the tree with a darker color, then I used a radial gradient from the top and adjusted the opacity. Then tweaked the colors with a gradient map (outside hexels)
Hey @EarthQuake or @MrsNomingtons I was wondering when it comes to submissions if you have something animated, can final submissions have a final image and an animation?
Sadly my animation has a bit of gif compression, so I was wondering if it's cool to submit both.

Yes, feel free to post both a gif, and a still png/jpeg.
Some progress on Bioshock. Gonna take a while to get everything looking as dirty and degenerate as I want..... Getting close to the deadline! Do the stairs look too weird? Having a hard time with them.
Replies
1. make your selection
2. create a new layer
3. apply the gradient in the new layer
so far it works for me, tell me if it does for you as well

Looking great, really love this! I can't wait to see animations!
But, seeing everyone else's rad progress I figured I should post mine.
And I haven't played a lot of Destiny, but really looking forward to seeing your next update!

Here is a quick tease around the entry I'm working on
The shot is going quite smoothly, I can't wait to show you the full picture.
@gael Good start, I think your glows are giving a nice feel to the piece. What game are you referencing?
Thank you, I use Final Fantasy 7 for reference with slight differences to better fit my composition/aim.
Really love how you've handled some of the rendering tho.

Good luck to everyone!
I reached a dead end with the podracer, so I'm switching to Pokemon.
@refraction Nice touch with the glowing mushrooms

Yes I plan on adding bit more props (as long as I can figure out what to put)
New WIP
Edit: @9thKnight
If you can, play around with the position of the character. Like what bcarter said, the character is in a weird spot.

Just had to say.

I'm currently experimenting on adding pokemon.
