Hello all, I'm working on a 3d environment base off on the concept art work of Ken Fairclough a Concept artist at BioWare the art work is called "Station" description is: "Battle torn modern train station"
I have been working on it for a couple of weeks and I'm currently picking back up where I left off before the holidays . Here is my ref sheet and my first block out:
Here is the rest of my progress from beginning to current:
Once I'm done texturing the objects I will have to go back in and play with the lighting some more. Feel free to leave some feedback it will be much appreciated.
Hey there, I really like your work so far. I have really enjoyed looking through your workflow so far on this project. I noticed in the concept scene, there is a lot of damage and debris scattered throughout the floors and walls. It appears in the concept image there was some sort of gun fight or battle. One suggestion would be to incorporate some of the damage into the textures for the floor and walls, or even a bit of dirt. It would really add to the story for your scene and would add a really good layer of depth and overall visual interest to it. I noticed your exit sign was pretty roughed up, which is good. It would just seem a little odd with the floors and walls being in perfect condition. I look forward to seeing more of your progress on this project, good work so far!
@Syncopnix Thanks man I'm glad you like my progress so far. For the damage I plan on using decals to place the the bullet holes and dents since it would be a little too hard to create a tillable texture with random bullet holes. Also everything thing that I have textured so far is a first past so I can get a better feel for room when I play with lighting. So since I'm almost done with the first pass of texturing I should be posting some of of the damage decals. I hope it works I have notice some issues with the opacity when using decals so well see. If not then I'll just have to make more textures lol. But thanks for the input, if you see anything else please point it out.
Once again, looks great so far. I'm a student, so i'm kind of in the learning stages for a lot of this stuff. I don't really have any experience with creating decals, but it would be great to see how you are planning on incorporating them into your project. It's something I need to work on still, as I'm still learning a lot about modeling and texturing still. I have found these forums to be very helpful and insightful with learning new tricks and methods for creating 3D art. I look forward to seeing your project progress further!
Hello guys and gals hope all is well. So here is an update on the station project I finished modeling and texturing the train (First pass) and now I'm working on the bullet hole decals. Here are a few shots of the scene below and the bullet decal below:
That looks great! Another thing that I was wondering, is if you planned on having any sort of debris clutter pile type objects? Such as small piles of rubble or even trash spilled on the ground.
Yes I do I was actually working on that now I have some trash some old newspapers I need to make some broken tile hopefully I'll get that done today I had to remake some of my textures.
so far I have some trash balls and some old news paper and a tarp in marvelous designer.
@Yogibear Thanks for the feedback the lighting in my scene is kind of broken right now so I have to fix it but here is what I have so far. @garcellano Thanks for the post yeah it's getting there taking longer than I though it would to get to his point. I still have a few more things to add as well as fix.
I reviewed the decal example in unreal and saw that every decal has to have some type of lighting in front of it in order for it to be seen. So I'm trying to figure out how to excluded the mesh behind the decal so that my scene does not have a bunch of random light spots all over the place. Any how here is some of the trash props that I have made for the scene I have to create a few more item for variation and a trash pile.
You should take a look at DBuffer Decals and the line you need to add to the .ini file to get them to show in baked lighting. (I think it's doable in the preferences now as well) Google should do the trick.
You got some repetition going on at the right wall, under the sign. The cloth on the crates, the folds seems to small/many for me, like it's silk or thin plastic. The subway cart, particularly the glass reads like blue glossy plastic.
As you already know, the lighting needs work, more bluish that what's in the concept, the concept reads like it's warm, dry air with a lot of dust.
@Stromberg90 Thanks that was on of the issues that I have yet to update it's actually all over the place on the walls. I've made a new texture but just have not uploaded it yet. But thanks for pointing that out I'll be sure to update that by the next post. For the cloth your right I need to tune the gloss turn it down a bit. For the tone I plan on using the LUT file to adjust that to get the tinted color. But some thing need to be slightly desaturated.
Right now I'm working on creating more damage to the scene, the broken floor the pile of debris on the ground more cracks in the walls as well as random dirt here and there. I also want to add some more tagging.
So here is the update there was an issue with the normal map on the concrete wall so once I fixed that the wall was looking better. I added some leaks to the wall as well as some new damage decals to the walls as well as some debris on the floor from the damaged walls. I need to fix the normal map from the bullet holes. I need to add more grunge on the walls and the walk way. In general I want to make sure that there is some type of damage or grunge (with in reason) every where. I also need to change the posters the textures got messed up. As always if you have any questions or want to point out some issues feel free to to do so. Thanks to every one that has commented so far!
Hello all it's been a while got a little side tracked with some other projects here is an update I have been playing with the lighting I think it is a little better but I'm still not happy.
Been a while sorry about. I was in the hospital for a blood clot in my chest next to my heart. I'm all good now taking my meds and what not. Any way here is an update. Still working on a few things hope to have them done by Monday. I still need to rework the train and update some of the textures. I added some more trash around the floor let me know if I should add anything else. I was thinking that after this place was attacked some troops set up camp here so adding some sleeping bags and a few tarps maybe a generator.
Starting to look really good man, but maybe play some more with the shadows along the walls and floor? Good thing your bloodclot worked out, dangerous stuff!
@Stavaas Thanks man! Sorry for the late response. I do plan on going back in and playing with the lighting a bit more and getting more interesting shots.
I had some other stuff that needed to be taken care of for the moment but I will be updating this guy some time soon.
Hey, This scene turned out very nice. I would love to see some more screen shots, I have been learning a lot about lighting recently, it really helps make or break a scene. Do you have any tips for lighting scenes?, I don't have nearly enough experience with it, I tend to make things a bit dark.
@Syncopnix Thanks for checking out my post here man I really appreciate that. As far as lighting goes I kind of in the same boat as you. I'm still learning so even now this scene is not as great as it should be. My advice would be to look at lighting reference of scenes that are similar to the mood and feel that you want yours to be. I have not looked at this scene in a while but I know that I have just some basic lights set up nothing fancy yet. When I get back to project I will be glad to do a break down if you are still interested.
@cmc444 Dude! thank's it nice to know people what to see this finished I will try to get back to this soon!
So I realized that I have not been posting my updates here. Part of the reason is that my project got messed up and I had to start over I have also been tied up in a few things but know I have a little more free time to finish this thing. Here are a few materials that I have been working on.
Here is an update on one the props in the scene trying to finish these things and tie it all together I should have bee posting an update on the scene it's self soon. https://imgur.com/a/Ytv9K
