Hey Guys, i was collaborating with Eric Ramberg to organize a Texturing Contest. So Here it is !
To Participate, you just download a Trial Version of the Quixel Suite (which you can get here:
http://quixel.se/ )
To win you simply Texture the provided Model with Quixel Suite and show your Work here in the Forums.
This is the Model you will be Texturing:
Rules:
1. You have to use Quixel Suite to Texture the Model (you can also use ndo)
2. You have to use 3do for the Presentation Render Screenshots
3. You have to provide a Texture Presentation.
4. You may modify the Color Map
5. You may modify the Normal Map
6. You cannot change the UV Layout
7. You cannot change the Model in any way(This is regarding the Final Model you use for texturing and Rendering, you may modify the model to render out color maps or normal maps That are different then the provided ones. As long as the Final Render shots you make of your Texture are made with the Original Low Poly Model that is provided !)
Here is a Demo Entry :
Of Course the Renders can be from different Angles and the Texture Presentation can look better. This is just an example how you would have an eligible entry. The Contest Duration will be 15 Days ! And will end
"28 August - 00:30 CEST"
The Winner/s will be chosen by Me with some input from Eric
Prizes:
1 Place Winner will get Access to the Quixel SUITE 2.0 Beta !
2-3 Place will each get a Quixel Suite Freelance License ! sponsored by the Quixel Team

FAQ:
Q: How many Entries are allowed per Person ?
A: You may only have 1 Entry per Person.
Q: Can we use custom base Textures ?
A: After a brief discussion i decided to allow Custom Base Textures, as long as you use Quixel to make the final complete Texture and Render. You are not however allowed to create a complete Albedo (Diffuse) Texture in a separate Program and use it.
Q: Is there a Resolution limitation ?
A: There is no limitation, the input maps are 4k though!
Q: Does it have to be a Grenade ?
A: As long as you use the Model that is provided to make the Render Screenshots, it can be anything you design the Texture to be.
Q: Can we use Custom Masks ?
A: Yes ! Custom Masks are allowed!
Q: Can we make additional Input Maps (Gradient Map for example) ?
A: Yes ! as long as you do not modify the Model you can do so. (and it is encouraged.)
(This is regarding the Final Model you use for texturing and Rendering, you may modify the model to render out color maps or normal maps That are different than the provided ones. As long as the Final Render shots you make of your Texture are made with the Original Low Poly Model that is provided !)
Q: Can we change the Smoothing Groups ?
A: Yes, although technically this is changing the Model, i am allowing it since it does not modify the shape of the model, and since i know that i am not good with smoothing groups.
Please Read the Thread if something is unclear, and ask if you are unsure !
Happy Texturing !!

2. Is there a resolution limitation?
1. The Texture has to be created with the model provided in the Thread, you can download it at the very bottom.
2. The Texture Size can be as big as you want. The input maps are 4k though.
The Reason for this of course is, that everyone has the same chances. And i only judge the texture not the model (which has nothing to do with quixel)
allthough you can't win ofc, i would really love to see what you can do with 2.0 though ! so why don't ya ?
*EDIT* sorry that i quoted wrong person before.. this is correct now
What's 2.0?
Can we use custom/painted masks/textures?
And also, this only seems to be of interest to people who don't have the suite already, as the prise is a suite license. Any love for people who have the suite already?
2.0 is the new Suite version we are all waiting for.
If you already do have the suite, i suppose you can gift the one you are winning, to a friend ?
(also, what about early access to 2.0 for the winner?)
Here you go i uploaded it to mediafire for you, i also had issues getting the file from dropbox.
https://www.mediafire.com/?cow9kcco6nkp04o
Firstly, 2.0 beta has me interested as a prize. I'm in if I have the time.
Secondly, did I miss something. We're talking about 2.0 Does that mean that 1.9 and some of the features it promised (mainly painting on the object in 3DO) will not be coming?
Eric has confirmed several times that 3D painting is in 3DO for version 2.0.
I have edited the Post with the Prize changes
ps. Thanks Ladygrace for uploading the files to mediafire, i added the links to the main Post
depends on what you mean exactly ?
making textures in substance for example and just using quixel for rendering, definatly not!
Tell me exactly what you mean by your own textures so i can tell you if it is okay or not.
very good question ! i totally forgot about that.
I would say 1 Entry per Person, so think hard which version you want to submit !!
*EDIT*
Custom Base Textures are allowed now.
Read the FAQ on the main Post.
*EDIT*
Custom Base Textures are allowed now.
Read the FAQ on the main Post.
Custom Masks are okay !
uhhh i think you are wrong people are genius with quixel
and do not forget you are encouraged to use ndo to change the normal, which can basicly make the whole thing into something entirely different basicly.
You can also add some other input maps, you made yourself. The high poly model is included to make additional input maps for example.
Custom Base Textures are allowed now.
Read the FAQ on the main Post.
Thanks for the answer, and the contest!
No Problem at all, thanks should go to the Quixel Team and Eric, they sponsored the Prizes, i just made the Model and had the Idea to do this. (it basicly gives us all something to do while we wait for 2.0)
ps. i did not know eric will make the 1 Prize Beta Access !! i hate him for that now, since i can't participate.
You hear that Eric ?!?!?! bad bad Eric !!
YES ! i included it in the FAQ on the first post already, it is actually encouraged to add more input maps. Just do not change the model
Since there is not yet any Entry.. i think its okay to change this rule right now, after the first entry is in.. there will be NO RULE CHANGE !!
I would not have any good way of detecting Custom Textures anyway
In the rules section it states:
Rules:
6. You cannot change the Model in any way
Which model, the Low or the High? or both?
If both, means i cant shoot some edge loops to alter my color id setups?
you can do whatever you want to the model, as long as the final model which you use for the Presentation is unaltered.
So basicly the rule is That you texture the model that is provided, how you create your input maps (color map in this example) is totally up to you.
I will make that more clear on the first page.
Let me know if they work for you or if i need to export to a different Format! (Since i only tested with 3Ds Max)

Yes i'm okay with that. I kinda suck at smoothing groups.
As long as you do not change the Mesh Shape.
Add details that are not included in the Mesh for example is not okay.
For the obvious reason, that this is a Texturing contest not a modeling contest.
When you say 'he has confirmed it many times', if you mean in one of the rambling threads with people moaning about delays and timescales and megascan release, then I gave up reading them a long time ago. 1.9, and its features, were announced, and I would have thought if that had changed, it would have been announced. It would seem this is going to be yet another piece of software that we are going to be expected to pay for an upgrade to get features we expected in the version we own.
please keep this Thread on Topic.
I dont get it you said that we can play with the normals but not the mesh, so can we change the high res mesh just to project normals or do we have to do it using Ndo only ?
For the obvious reason, that this is a Texturing contest not a modeling contest.
But we can add details through Ndo right??
Im not modifying the low poly .. shouldnt that be alright ?
For people who cannot bake normals, there is a normal included, so you do not have to bake the normal map to make a good Texture. Does not stop you from doing so.
The important thing is that you cannot change the final low poly mesh.
So... you can change every input map in any way however you want to. You cannot however change the low polygon model that you use for the Presentation Renders. That has to be the provided low poly model. (with the exception i added, that you can change smoothing groups. Since that does not change the polygons and add more detail)
Basicly just do not add polygons to the low poly model you use for the Final Render presentation.
Hopefully the above answers your question.
hope i explained it good enough
can't wait to see the results of all of you !
