He was using the stencil painting tools in Mudbox for that. They're pretty powerful and simple to use, but Zbrush has Mudbox beat in basically every other area.

R2-D2 wasn't a robot, he was a guy in a suit (Kenny Baker). In the newer films they may have done some practical stuff, but he was mostly CGI.
BB-8 is kind of neat though. I do like what I've seen from the latest trailer, it does seem like they're getting the look and feel down right and in line with the original trilogy, though naturally a little more modern. I just hope they don't go overboard with the action scenes and that the writing is en-point.

There's some speculation that there might be a remote control BB-8 toy in the works. There's a "Star Wars themed toy" in development at a robotics studio that was recently mentored by Disney. I know which robot I'd throw some money down for.

My guess is it is magnetically locked to a counter weight balanced inner robot in the ball, and the head is on bearings.
