It goes beyond doubt that there`s a lot of "talent" and skill showcased on Art Station. Just...mindblowing.
But honestly...the whole "invite" thing...I don`t know. A great marketing startegy that makes people feel "special" when they join. On the other hand, I`m getting a strong "You are just not good enough for us to invite you" vibe as well. Feels very "elite" to me.
Yo, Pxel (and pretty much anyone else wanting an invite).
It's basically an open beta; near anyone who "applies" gets an invite (I suggest trying to send an application in before asking someone for an invite code). I think it's just so the owners CAN turn off applications in the event of a sudden influx. Y'know, just so the option is there. This is a common thing to have for art sites in beta mode, or art sites that are young and run by a small amount of people who might have trouble moderating if things got out of hand.
By no means is it a judge of your character and/or quality of your art.
Side note, I highly suggest swapping the home page tab to "Latest" every once in a while, rather than "Picks" or "Trending", too. There's a random sweep of art, some that's awesome and goes entirely unnoticed, some slightly less awesome but with awesome amounts of potential. Both equal amounts of inspiration and people you might want to connect with.
Trending is new uploads that people are currently in the process of gaining views and likes.
It's to keep the front page from becoming stagnant, I believe. Still, the average on trending is more like 50 likes. Maybe try Picks? But I'm surprised there isn't just a plain old "popular" tab.
Trending comes and go. I think it's something along the line of 'more than 20+ Views per hour = trending'. When its view drops to say, 18 per hr, then it's not being trended anymore. (number and formula are examples.)
My Trended submission got like 20 likes and 800+views for like a day or two before it was no longer being trended.

To add to this, once you have a good amount of artists followed, the feed becomes a great way to find new artists whose works haven't made trending/front page yet or who you may not know about.
Plus 80% of the trending page isn't boobs in bikini armour
QFT.
Seriously, I agree with you. While I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with boobs and bikini armor (well, maybe I do from a practicality standpoint), it was just about all there was on that site. More of the same, the status quo, and anything that was a deviation from that or an attempt to be something different or original was either largely ignored or buried by the sheer volume of boobs.
If that's your thing, of course, it's still there, that stuff is never going away. But at least now we have more variety. And it seems consistent too.

I think they all moved over to drawcrowd. Sometimes it's cool to see that style but man, some days I feel like I have to wade through 50 porcelain doll bikini girls to see cool art. Don't get me wrong, the execution is usually done well, but sometimes I get really tired of having to filter through all that...

Haha I said exactly that the other day. Plus their UI is terrible. I hate having to look through folios on there.
Question. How do you add multiple pictures in a page? When I uploaded my images, it does one image per thumbnail. But, I've seen a bunch in one page per thumbnail.
edit: Figured it out. This is for artwork that's already posted. For those who're trying to figure it out go here:
Dashboard > Portfolio (rollout) > Artwork > select an artwork and hit edit.
Hey has anyone noticed they can't view their 'Followers/Following'? It's been broken for a while for me, I can still view my 'Liked' and gallery ofc tho.
No difference on Firefox/Chrome either.

Eh...It`s probably all in my head. Silly Pxel.

However, the highest "trending" images only have like 300-400 views and 5 likes. That kinda blows.

That way the fans of that don't have to wade through boring non doll art, and vice versa. WIN WIN
