My real worry is that for a 'gameplay' trailer, there wasn't a whole lot of gameplay going on. We know you can fly between and walk around planets - but there's got to be more to it than that, right?
Maybe just because it is the first one. The potential to 'free up' small teams so they can concentrate on the game and not be tethered to content creation is what the developer talks about as being the biggest advantage of the system. I think this is a really exciting tool, I would just play the game on principle.
After playing bloodborne chalice dungeons I worry this game will be crap. If Fromsoft could mess up that when you have stuff like Dungeon crawl stone soup, nethack, brogue and even DoomRL. Yet it turned into a boring grind.
I have no idea what you're responding to, but quite easily? Overhyping something prior to release can be disastrous, and the hype train for this was running pretty hard late last year...
Hello Games has expressed many times that they don't want to overhype, and players being disappointed is actually something they're worried about. They didn't set out to make a game for the masses. It's the gaming community/press that's guilty of overhyping it.
yeah but thats basically because they never said something like "this is all there will be, nothing more" so far most things i have seen leave almost anything actual gameplay related open.

Not sure what you're saying. From Software messed it up when other, smaller teams __________ ? succeeded, failed, existed?
Honestly, I'll only ever believe this is actually a game when it's in my hands and can play it. When it was first revealed, it was the most overly ambitious thing I'd ever heard of. There's no way it can deliver on even half the things stated about it.
Really didn't seem that overly ambitious to me, you can explore a proceduraly generated galaxy, full stop. They seem pretty restrained in what they promised.
Exception being that the idea is you can do this with other players, who might be on other planets entirely different from you. How the hell that's gonna work with the idea of seamless travel they presented in the video, got me!
In general, by the time the game comes out, the market's gonna be so saturated with these types of games, nobody will care. we're already at a point where everyone and their dog is making half-baked "explore and survive" style games that SOMEHOW get on Steam.
Are we at that point? I sure hadn't noticed. I see a lot of "survival" games, but not much like this. And very few are implementing this kind of interesting procedural tech. And very few are space-sized.
I'm not really interested in hyping this up, I've got a very low bar I want it to hit and I haven't been keeping up with the announced features, but based on what little we do know about this, aren't you being a bit unnecessarily negative? Condemning the game at this point based on the amount of coverage its getting and what you think its genre is seems unfair.

reading that interview it sounds like quite a relaxing game to play like maybe they expect gamers would play uncharted or something like that for crazy thrills and then just chill for a bit after that playing no mans sky for 30 minutes and just messing about exploring and upgrading stuff. Like a casual game for hardcore gamers or something haha.
Can't wait to play it. My main worry is that every planet we have seen so far looks exactly the same. Yellow grass, red trees...etc. I'd hope to see a very diverse range of planet types and an near infinite variety of flora and fauna.... but I don't think we are going to get it.
I have literally not met anyone who hasn't been very reserved about their excitement for this game.
Maybe I just hang out with a chill crowd, I've missed any and all semblance of hype (this article is baffling to me, honestly-- the "meditative" line struck with what I thought this was more than anything else). I just want to explore space and collect minerals and scan some fish/animals. Please deliver on wide variety of fish to scan, Hello Games.
also, hundreds of thousands of variations to a ship? i wonder how much that really is. variationcount can be ramped up pretty quickly and easily. it sounds like a big number, but is like
10 guns, 10 thrusters, 10 cockpits, 10 wings, 10 engines and 10 versions of landing gear. bam 100k variations, only one asset more with 10 variations and the variationcount is at a million. This could really mean no real variations or a lot
I hope they don't wind up awkwardly duct-taping linear goal-oriented game mechanics onto it as happened with Spore. It does look like it could maybe use a few more general mechanics to keep things amusing for a bit longer.
I think expanding on the exploration and cataloguing elements would help. Something like the rewards for photographing different species based on rarity of the specimen as was seen in Beyond Good and Evil could work. That could even work into a kind of tourism - Come see this weird thing I discovered at coordinates X,Y,Z.
Actually that could work into the trading too - For example, you have NPC traders looking for specific resources. If a player finds a particular resource on a planet, they can flag flag it and perhaps receive a finders fee if other players come to collect it.
Essentially they need to do all they can to incentivise exploration and travel. Bumming around the universe and looking at stuff is only likely to keep most people amused for a little while before they need a little bit more to keep things fresh.
This game is reminding me so much of Starbound. Everyone knows how hyped that game was before release, and all the talk of procedural content turned out to make a very shallow, boring experience. I hope the same isn't true for this.
Good. I actually really enjoyed spore a lot. I have a fair idea I will love to play this game.
Yup, I put hundreds of hours into Spore. I love Proteus and put about 37 hours into Starbound. I'm pretty sure I'm the demographic this game was made for.
I still loved Spore, only thing I wished it had was the ability to beam down to the procedural planets as the captain from Galactic Adventures and do some interacting with the local wildlife and civilizations versus only the missions (which still Imo was pretty cool, minus a few omissions like being able to use vehicles in them or having A or B conditional branches versus the forced linear objectives)
I'm super curious to find out about the other space ships in the game though, it looks like in the trailer the ship actually takes off from a carrier Battlestar Galactica style. Possible factions/having your own private armada? I'm going to take a guess and say probably not to the extent I hope for/ Haven't seen the player pilot anything besides the tiny little fighter yet.
I need some Star Trek style exploration of planets, Borg destruction, and my own personal Capital ship dammit!
Hey I just saw what I think is a new trailer is it just me or has the art style gone quite a lot more realistic? a bit desaturated and lots of normal detail mapping perhaps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AVmI73va4g
Oh man- that trailer has me even more hyped than I was before! I LOVE games where I can just exploreat my own pace- my old-man reflexes can't keep up with most games these days!
Definitely the game that'll convince to to get a PS4
yeah I really dont mind a more stress free game to play! Lately I couldnt even handle the last of us(which I know is an awesome game), so much tension and stress.
I'm not sure how stress free it's going to be, one of their inspirations is The Long Dark. I highly recommend it, it's a great game, especially if you have to ask "what do you do!?". Another great one I've been addicted to is Subnautica, you're stranded in an ocean on an alien planet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzxD7VFVrCw
yeah Ive been playing Rust with some friends on and off for the last year or so, its definitely not stress free but thats mostly because of the lack of security in your progress. For example servers get wiped, or other players just destroy ALL your stuff, hopefully no mans sky doesnt follow that brutal survival game style. Im not interested in playing the long dark, it just looks too depressing for me.
Huge props to the team working on this. A lot of people will really love playing it It's simply not my cup of tea. I have had a lot of people ask me if I was going to buy & play it and I always have to say "no". I like the idea of space exploration and battles, but that's it. I'm not terribly interested in procedurally generated worlds and crafting. Never really have been. I'd rather experience a single solar system that is beautifully designed.
The soundtrack album is up for streaming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AWX54C49pw I assume it'll stop being up for streaming some time in the not too distant future, so check it out while you can. It's rather good.
Im not hyped. I like the idea of the universe but for me its only a very good basement for a game. Like a epic Journey aka Homeworld. I think i have the Skyrim illness. 100 different caves but after a few you know the "system" behind and nothing generated can suprise you anymore.
I'm in the same boat... I especially don't like how little we really know about this game, and their attempt to squash anyone displaying game footage, because they don't want anything 'spoiled'. It feels like more like a company that doesn't have confidence in their game. All I've seen are clips of ships landing/launching, scanning planets, and showing some of the wildlife. Nothing explaining where the 'fun' is.
Don't get me wrong, I really hope it's a fun, and new experience. Maybe once it's released, people will share something to excite me, but at this moment, I have almost no interest in this game. The tech behind this game, is the only reason I have any interest

Well to be fair... I dont think its that odd to suppress leaked prelease footage, especially a copy breaking street date that early. I dont think I've met too many devs in general that like leaks.
It's a survival game, they've shown the fun, all they are withholding is the story. It's funny that there's so much backlash about it being overhyped, a game that has simply just shown gameplay footage, no vague teasers or unrealistic cg movies, just straight up gameplay.

Stop Thinking Of No Mans Sky As A Multiplayer Game
As far as big space games we've got Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen, not as crowded as FPS or 3rd person action games.
Good news is NMS is coming out on PC and PS4 at the same time.
Bad news is what they showed this year is sadly the exact same stuff as every other time. If you're skeptical of the gameplay this definitely won't help.
