Can we get back on topic of awe about how much work that one artist has done?
I really hope that one artist hasn't had to slave away and hand-craft much at all. Rather focus on creating a vision, without having to worry too much about vertex placement, UV islands baking errors and other useless stuff.
That's the way all game development should be done these days, if you ask me...
I might be wrong though, and they only have 5 trees, 20 rocks, 10 spaceships, and so on, all hand-made, that are then just stretched and their textures recolored a bit to look like variations, but I really do hope they took a smarter approach to it than that.
It's an interesting concept ... if t's going to be exceedingly rare to run into other players then why have other players at all? The interactions, by nature, can't be integral to anything or critical to progression .... so is it just a social avenue?
Artificial scarcity will render the event of players meeting one another monumental to the experience of each player. Whilst it may not have any real impact (or the outcome may have significant impact, we don't know enough), the sheer novelty of the event is what will make it important.

Yes, perfectly put into words exactly what I was thinking!
There has to be more to it than just novelty. It's a huge engineering effort to support online play, other players in the same world, persistence just to put a smile on someone's face if they happen to see another player. :P
It's a gorgeous thing. My too-good-to-be-true senses are tingling, but at this stage I'm going to pretend that it's going to be just as amazing as the trailer indicates.

More games need to be soundtracked by 65DaysofStatic.
Ohhhh is that who it is? Awesome! Thanks man, I was looking for the track.
Update: This story originally included mention that No Man's Sky is confirmed for PC. Hello Games has only confirmed the PlayStation 4 version at this time. We regret the error.
i hope it can stand up to the hype, as of now i know nothing about the GAME. It looks great but the little gameplay it showed looked very bland. I fear this is another Spore coming up, or a new generation of "Molineuxism".
The game has such a huge potential, and i really really hope they do not fail, it sounds just too cool. Reminds me a lot of how cool i thought Black & White is going to be.
I remember thinking when I first saw the trailer that it looked an awful lot like No Man's Sky is going to be the game that Spore really wanted to be, but fell short of the mark. I really hope it is, it's rare that I get excited about games like I did when I was a kid, but I'm excited about No Man's Sky.
man, it's so vast! I think it would be a fun project to get a group together and survey an entire planet, keeping a journal of the progress. I hope it doesn't fall into the sci-fi trope of every planet consisting of a single biome like forest planet, swamp planet, desert planet, etc...
This just sounds like that one game I could just get in love with. I really like the idea that the plants are so vast that the likelihood to even explore every single inch of that one planet is near unlikely or impossible... and than you have many more unlimited planets that are possible to be explored. This is by far an amazing idea. i also hope that the biome of each planet is not generic but combined and diverse as a place like earth or as chaotic as many other plants around.
This game has me in deep awe and appreciation for the game craft. I hope.

Considering that I spent hundreds of hours inside of Spore I think I'm going to win either way with No Man's Sky
It sounds amazing, im even more impressed that its only 4 people developing it.
its nice to see a team with such passion for what they are making, and its a game that looks like it should appeal to the inner explorer in everyone.
Im hoping for a star trek feel, where we can boldly go where no gamer has gone before, discover new frontiers and new life.
Im amazed! how would they even do the animals - I mean if they were modular bit like in spore I could understand it but the promo video shows things like dinosaurs and antelope that look like 1 solid model with no modular pieces so how can they have procedural animals?
oh yeah just watched it, looks great . The clip where they are using their toolbox with the triceratops variations has an alt id on the side which maybe gives some hints as to how this works. Looks like a morphable base body and a selection of heads with various other modular features like horns. Should make for lots of cool variations as they seem to be checking through the variants by hand to some extent to make sure they dont get any rubbish ones.
My real worry is that for a 'gameplay' trailer, there wasn't a whole lot of gameplay going on. We know you can fly between and walk around planets - but there's got to be more to it than that, right?

exactly what i was thinking while watching it. what do you actually do?
Maybe there was some hints as to what you can do in this world. They warped to space where there was a large fleet. Maybe you can interact somehow with them. Then landed on the nearby planet next to what looked like a smoking (damaged? crashed?) spaceship. Perhaps there are rescue missions or salvage missions? Then the portal, not sure the idea behind it, just seems like a fast travel system. But maybe those could be mission type portals, I believe it was marked on the radar which implies it has some importance and you should go there.
All just guesses, they've built a very cool universe and I certainly hope there are some quests. Don't know how important a main story is, but some direction and purpose of what to do would be nice.
I really love what i see so far, it's just a little shame it's not focusing on multiplayer or MMO even, in the style of minecraft, it seems like a type of game you'd love to explore together with friends....
To be honest, I could care less about "gameplay", as it were. I kinda just want to go around, see new things and like... scan them. If you could contribute to a collective encyclopedia of worlds, flora and fauna I would be happy, but unfortunately it's kinda sounding like that's not so much of a plan? Multiplayer expeditions would have been cool, too, but hey.
Looking forward to seeing more of this, probably purchasing it lol
Edit: Realtalk though you clearly have a HUD for things and stuff so there's obviously something. I'm still crossing my fingers for scanning shit to a database. They have who discovered the world, so why not other stuff too?
From the game informer cover story it sounds like there are a lot of stations to dock at, trading and ship upgrades so you can make longer jumps. I am guessing they have to show the game more often than they would have without the Sony deal too.
i am so glad this isnt going to be an early access game though
I'd still probably enjoy the game even if all you could do is fly around and walk around. It'd be nice to see some more activities or something of the sort, but the art is beautiful and it looks like it'd be an interesting experience.
Don't forget the music. 65DaysofStatic are now confirmed to be doing the entire soundtrack. They've guaranteeed my purchase money with that announcement, even if this turns out to be an aimless walking simulator (which might be ok in itself).
to sum up for those who havent read the GI article:
- the goal of the game is apparently to get to the center of the universe
- millions of differnet planets, everyone starts on a different one. first goal is to craft a ship
- the game is exploration + gathering/crafting + arcade space combat ("like halo")
- there are stations in every solar system, selling ships, upgrades, etc. a mini social hub.
- there are upgrades for your suit, your ship, your multitool, etc.
- honestly hell, if you're interested in more, just read this: http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=944662
i'm excited for the game, mainly because it was pretty, it was a space-sim kinda thing, and there was exploration. but the more I learn, the more interested I get. I do think the hype is overblown, with a lot of people projecting what they want the game to be onto it, and we might see some kind of backlash at launch.
However, I think the devs are doing it right by only revealing a little at a time, and not really trying to pump people up and hype them for all kinds of 'features' and shit that might not be in the game. In my opinion it's kind of the opposite way destiny handled it. Destiny promised so so so much, and while in the end it was a fun game, it was so lacking in comparison to what they said it would be. With No Man's Sky, the devs havent really promised anything, but instead simply showed off their world and tech, with gamers themselves doing all the hyping instead of a marketing attack (at least up to this point. I'm sure sony will be throwing money at them towards launch to get it some more visibility), and they keep revealing more facets of the game as we get further. I have no doubt this stuff will be in the game, as opposed to a lot of AAA big publisher titles that are mostly all talk these days
I'm not sure that only revealing a little at a time does much to mitigate the hype. It's quantum game that could be anything or everything until some details are revealed to collapse the waveform.

I don't think it has anything to do with mitigating hype. The idea as far as I can understand it, is to just give players a little at a time so they aren't overwhelmed with the full picture and have time to appreciate each part before showing more

That means morph targets, and a hell of a lot of different types of source assets.
Even in spore all the base animal parts were hand modeled and these guys don't have the programming resources that maxis had.

Phew, that sounds promising.
I think it would be a silly choice to make this a console exclusive given the reception it's gotten.

I bet Sony is pressing hard right now to acquire Hello Games, or at least get NMS as a full blown exclusive.
HOpefully it's timed exclusive at best, it would be a shame to not play this....
