Welcome to our 9th monthly unofficial Dota 2 workshop friendly competition
This month we are keeping the single item style and this month of October the theme will be
"Mounts and Summons"
---
The competition
the idea of the competition is to create items in a friendly environment and with the feedback of the other participants to get the best result possible.
The single item style is good for the guys that are not used to make items, sometimes they just need a little pull with references and deadlines to get an item done
From this month and the next ones, its mandatory to post the work in progress, or else the submition will not be accepted!
Each month we are sponsored by
HANDPLANE, which give us 2 licenses to be handled to the 2 best items
Handplane is a tool for creating normal maps that are synced to specific game engines. Much like encoding and decoding an mp3, the math used to calculate tangent space must match between the normal map and the game engine. When the code does not match, you will often see gradients on your models. For workshop artists, this means you can eliminate the need for hard edges and supporting geometry that you would have otherwise used to control shading behavior. A video comparing different normal maps in the source engine:

handplane is free for non-commercial use and we explicitly allow commercial steam workshop development under the free license.http://www.handplane3d.com"
*** update, now its 4 licenses!, thanks Alec!

Inspiring quotes
"It is absolutely insane the amount of top quality content that is being produced every single time here on Polycount. It's great to see so many cosmetics deliver not just on the technical end but also make for such great fittings in every other branch. You guys are doing an exceptional job and contests like this are only helping boost that exponentially. Brilliant stuff."
Wykrhm Reddy"It was bloody hard picking from this list, I honestly enjoyed all of the entries. Keep up the good work guys!"
Cyborgmatt
Wow, that's really awesome. Please keep us at Valve informed so we can help draw attention to the winners, progress threads, etc.
Some advice:
Try to give some attention to heroes that are under-served so far (in terms of amount of content).
The success of sets tracks well with the popularity of the hero. (Although popularity can vary between updates and as Icefrog changes balance.)
Look for heroes that the community seems to have trouble creating content for. Good work can really open up the design landscape and help people think about the dynamic range of potential designs.
Don't forget about single items (instead of full sets). Many of the most popular items in the game are single items. Mounts and weapons make good candidates for this, but it varies by hero.
Mix up these approaches. So maybe one month you do a popular hero and another month you do a hero that has few items.
-Brandon Reinhart (Valve)
I love you guys for doing this! Dota2 is my favorite game at the moment and Polycount is my favorite community! I'm very proud to be apart of such dedicated artists and I smile every time I see some Polycount work in game

Presentation
the presentation is a really important part on the workshop, save some time before the deadline for that. the first impression means a lot on the workshop.
If you want to fancy your presentation here is a the polycount logo over the aegis, there is no need of it to be used

Is this month's competition for Radiant only?
EDIT:
Here's a list of heroes that has mounts/summons. Not sure if things like Tuskar's sigil or Jugg's healing ward are considered summons, I can change the image if they aren't.
Also, for some reason, Jugg's ward isn't in his tech requirements page, but there are some custom healing wards in-game.
Who am I kidding? I AM SO IN!
I don't think it's Radiant/Dire this month? I think that's just leftover from a copy/paste of August's rules.
You can add Invoker to that list
Will be doing the batray for this one.
Here are some sites that may be helpful:
The art of animal drawing> http://drwbook02.narod.ru/cover.html
Animal anatomy> http://www.pinterest.com/mdanuz/animal-anatomy/
Stuff like this that make the monthly competition meaningful. Really appreciate it.
Update: I have a cool idea for a Disruptor mount. Hopefully I can rough sketch something out today.
thanks, i always forget something from the previous month!
hmm, couriers are kind of summons to me =]
for me i think it could be in, but let wait to see what the other guys think
there is 2 possibilities, using the ingame bones or not.
if you are going to use the default bones that a lot of care with the anatomy, it NEED to work with that structure, so its really important to have the bones as a reference
If you are not using the default bones, take in consideration that you need to make the bones again, with all the information like hitboxes and attachement, and you need to make ALL the animations of the character (example: new mirana mount need to also make animations for mirana, and not just for the mount because its a single skeleton)
For now there few examples that does that, as far as i remember, the two treents and the lone druid's spirit bear (spirit of calm)
Edit:
I'm almost ashamed to post this, but in the spirit of trying new things I decided to grab a pen and try to draw some concepts before modeling.
Do you think that an Okapi of Death would be too silly for Abaddon/Chaos Knight?
so my new plan is to do a mechanical bat for batrider instead, a kind of steam-punk bat, and yeah I know, either you like or you hate steam-punk stuffs and I am one of the fans as you probably already figured out :P .. so here is a really early early WIP for the bat instead
I've been working on a batrider set l8ly and haven't started the bat yet...Perfect timing! I'm in!
should we add ultimates too or is going to be too much options?
@Tvidotto: I think an Ultimate would also count as a summon, so it would fit the contest!
I don't have a great concept artwork, but also started on working on a furion summon. The idea is to have a tree like monster, here's what i got so far:
Ultimate is transformation, you aren't "summoning" something.
So what is Warlock doing with his ultimate?
I think transforming should be allowed as it's different from the base model. Syllabear, Panda and Dragon Knight should be added.
No I mean stuff like DK's dragon form and Lone druid's bear form. maybe ultimate wasn't the right word.
@Stefco Pumpkin minion is probably the most awesome thing ever.
Did a boar for beastmaster, so thought why not make a process shot for concepts too.
I was allso waiting for an excuse to do a mount .
I made a couple o few weapons and shields for chaos knight ,so I decided to make a shoulder and mount allso ( have helmet) to complete the set , and add the other weapons as alternatives .
The sketch is obviously someting done in 20 min , but I'm gonna go for a clasical knight with long red cape and cloth all over the horse ( someting like the ones in Lotr ) with only some metal armor to accent the heavy'ness.
cheers
I'm gonna have a go at something simple to get the ball rolling for my first dota 2 item. I'll be having a go at Tusk's Sigil.
Here's a mini moodboard I've done while googling stuff from his skills and lore.
I'll have a go at playing with the silhouette of Tusk's base sigil and see what I can make from it.
I could test it in-game just fine by replacing the current files in the test client, but that wouldn't fix the problem of not being able to upload it to the workshop (it's a 2000-3000 poly limit, can't upload it as anything else).
Any advice? Should I go ahead and make it and just have the workshop entry be screenshots/video? Or wait until it's officially supported by the importer?
That looks amazing great work i can already picture it
hey sir!
nop, both are considered a single courier, you cannot change just the donkey because its on the same file
cheers
