I started a Kelthuzad... then saw the new WoW cinematic, so was getting orc vibes (hence those orc sketches), worked into one of them during my lunch and ended up with this... I now want to do a full orc character They're to cool
Hey Optinium I just wanted to leave you a message letting you know your work is truly amazing. I was originally blown away by your huge demon guy when I spotted it in the "what are you working on" thread and your alien and Illidan sculpts are absolutely incredible!
As an aspiring artist I hope to produce work of this caliber in the future.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's watched your work with interest an a little bit of awe. Keep it up mate!
Thanks people. After some busy months at work and dabbling with some freelance, I'm gonna get back into the swing of things.
Some head sculpting practice... I need a lie down, might do more later
The Venom 'render' is actually a screengrab of the realtime viewport in Keyshot 5 after letting it sit for about 30 secs. I use a translucent material but adjust the properties, surface to grey and sub-surface to black and pretty much 0 translucency, sounds pretty odd but that material just renders slightly differently to the basic plastics and I personally prefer the look of it. I also enable Global Illumination to.
The venom sculpt is unreal
not too much a fan of the helmet tho, especially the eye lenses. I dont think human eyes could see through that properly but im not sure. Remember form follows function, if you want sci-fi gear that is truly great and convincing, of which only very few achieve, then try thinking like an industrial designer and build your parts with function, constraints and usability in mind, do not just add shapes so they look kinda cool Also simplicity is key , real objects are as simple as they can be, they only have what they need.
Decided to take my venom sculpt in a different direction, still early days but thinking of a darksiders vibe, might even splice him with some armor, unsure...
A KS screengrab from a freelance piece I'm working atm that I have permission to show. Still very much a WIP, still got some design choices to tackle such as parts of the lower legs and the hands/forearms. Cleaned up some shapes, still got to break them up and detail them which will come once I'm happy with everything in general.
Its not representative of the final colour break up that I have in mind, although it gives a good idea; Ill be wanting to break up a lot of the white with some small details/accents and black panelling but keep the overall read like it is now.
Hands are placeholder and need love along with the calf/heel zones
After months of graft on freelance projects and contracts, I've adjusted to the lifestyle and have started to get in a good routine which is leaving me with some free time, I've had a bit of fun playing some games recently bit I think it's time for me to do some more guff
Thanks Jacob, I need to get some solid renders of the Venom sculpt, I kinda fell out of love with it towards the end, was getting a bit burnt out at work whilst forcing myself to do that. >.<
Recently sparked up the art urge again so will hopefully posting a lot more!
Been dormant for awhile on the forums, plenty of great stuff going on I see After moving house and setting up a new office I'll hopefully have time to spend on more art soon In the meantime I spent my lunch hour bashing out some Orc proportions for fun

P.s happy new year all
Awesome work dude!
It indeed is, started out as a random head, then decided to try and emulate his likeness somewhat, the fact you notice who it is fills me with joy :P
Or make someone like Arthas, with armor etc. Like you did with Illidan.
Anyway great job Optinum, good to see you still postin' here.
Too much male-ness going on. We need some womenly charms up in here.
Nice to see you posting things again. Looks a bit haggard for Hugh, then again I haven't seen much TV stuff with him recently.
Anyway, continue the stuff that you are making, Optinum. Good luck!
No critique from me, he's looking great, loving the detail in that skin with those wrinkles and pores.
Started a Venom sculpt to keep fresh... still very much a WIP
How do you render your highpoly sculpt? Because it is great.

Did some more on this tonight, need to design some armor for him next.
