I saw the speed modeling thread above.I liked that idea. It made me think about how this process, of getting the meat & potatoes of your work down as fast as possible, could also benefit those of us that animate. My curiosity got ahold of me...
So, during lunches this week.. I set a timer on my ipod for 20mins and had at it. Best i could do in 20mins
Editing: [To any other animators: feel free to jack into this thread and post your speed animations! ]
These are so neat, where are you getting the rigs to animate on from?
trying to wrap my logically thinking brain around biped still..
have to get used to it for a dream job coming up..
tons of stuff to fix in that animation, especially thowards the end.. but if I spend any more time with the curves I will go postal and kill everyone in my apartment..
Regarding your edit..
Can't say I've ever used the Anchor left/right leg buttons before.(Under Keyframing tools)
Instead.. I'd suggest going under (Key Info) and setting a "planted or sliding key" on each leg for them to lock into position. Then use the "free key" to allow them to rotate with the root. ( I regularly use these as hotkeys, similarily to how you press 's' in maya to set a key.)
Hi, polycount, this is my first official post, so forgive me if its poorly formatted
i did this a few days ago. It took longer than 20 min- i cut it off at about 90 min.
Nice job everyone. thatanimator, your attack animation is looking pretty nice. ParksMarks, Looks like you have a good start there, it looks like the left hand is cutting through her leg a little bit, might just be the angle though. its a pretty nice looking rig, did you make it yourself?
I did another one- hopefully more polish than last time, and only 40 minutes:O
I DID end up ripping off Richard williams a bunch to save time though...
While animating, professionally in Maya and tvPaint, I learn so much from these wonderful little exercises. Like traditional animation, stop-motion forces you to understand timing and spacing in a way that is extremely helpful in CG.
These are probably around 30 minutes to 2 hours. Of course, depending on the shot and circumstances surrounding the execution. I animated straight ahead with minimal blocking to work out an idea. For the most part, I like animating straight ahead with stop motion because it's fun to be flexible with the process and make it up as you go. Something I find hard to do with CG.
I used a Canon EOS 7d and Dragonframe for the Stopmotion anims and tvPaint for the traditional anims.
I'll be throwing my hat in with CG related material soon but for now...

I realize both of these critiques are a little overboard for the forum but I'm procrastinating on an animation I need to finish, a drawing with watercolors is drying and I thought, "What the hell. Let's see if I can offer some help for your test."
You have some nice animations on your reel. Good luck with the test.
The videos may take a couple of seconds to load.
Part one focuses mainly on the run up to the climb.

Thanks for such extensive feedback, many of the problems you mentioned I didnt noticed up until now, because I worked on it alone and was in the tunnel vision. I had 3 days to do it and unfortunately I did not get the job.
Regarding the reference I used I suppose there are a number of ways to climb up a wall, I specifically used this reference, the guy explained a lot about whats going on during the climb, but now I see that my result was not as good as it should
It served the needs of the test as the character needed to jump over a 3 meter wall whilst running, the rest I acted out myself and that is how I decided to approach some of the motion decisions. Oh and his butt looks like sticking out a lot as he is climbing because it is sticking out naturally like that, even when standing, that is the shape of his body.
I like to polish things over and over so I will try to correct whats wrong with it based on your critique, thanks for taking the time to do it!
You're welcome. Like I said, I had some time to kill when you posted so I was drawn to giving an in depth critique. It's easy to get sucked into the tunnel. It's like walking into a store where they have the Otis Spunkmeyer fragrance dancing through the air ducts. It's terribly inviting and cruel. :-)
Sexy stuff.. I would really like to do some fps animations, but no idea where to get a suitable rig.
You can basically use any rig of a human-esque character, plus a weapon, and hide the head and then put a camera there instead. Tweak the FOV until you have what you want .
Looking good MiAlx! The only feedback I have is to double check her high kick. She currently kicks with the side of her foot, which is asking for injury. Use the ball of the foot in the kick, like you do in the sweep.
Hello guys I'm completely new to animation but I am really enjoying it, so far I am following what Slipsius said on page 2. So here's my first go at a bouncing ball.
hey guys, awesome speed animations on this thread, something that bothers me though is how on earth do you guys manage to flip the characters around on foot or hand ? I have very few experience on foot work animation and really wonder if it comes from technical aspects of the rig?
Anyway, awesome thread!

I adore everything going on in this thread:D
nooo, I used Proletariats' Zombination rig, available here. I'll definitely go back and fix the arms
I DID end up ripping off Richard williams a bunch to save time though...
Here is what ive done, pretty slow and lazy, need to learn to work fast on these.
Arms need some more work to work nicely with the belly

both were animated in blender
I painted the effects in photoshop after
Thought I'd post a couple of anims just because why not .
Random wolf walk cycle animation I made for quadroped practice, worked on it for an hour or two. Playing around with wolf/dog mechanics overall.
Reload animation from Wolfenstein The New Order.

Also... That green guy is USELESS. haha
Stephen, you're killing it man. Awesome!
Here's what a clip of a small combat move. But it's not a speed animation.
