Modelling from primitives
Hi, everyone. So recently i've started learning 3ds Max from zero. I've learned a bit about primitives and decided to model something by using primitives. I jumped into pinterest and looked for some ideas, and found a picture of a water tower. I took that as a reference and started modelling. So, what do you think of this model? Let me know your opinions

I'm not a rigger nor animator for chars however fwiw I've limited experience with hard surface mechanical stuff so just a few options that may be helpful:
1 - Mesh bends or deforms in unexpected ways when you move the bone
Use Weight Paint Mode: Use the weight paint mode to adjust bone influence on specific vertices
Avoid "Bendy Bones": If you're using bendy bones, be aware that they can cause unwanted deformation
2 - Character doesn't move smoothly or as expected when you pose it
Ensure Proper Parenting: Make sure the mesh is properly parented to the armature
Use Constraints: Use constraints to control bone movements and create more complex animations
3 - Props/Clothing Not Moving Correctly
Parent to a Bone: Parent the prop/clothing to the appropriate bone in pose mode, using "Bone" instead of "Automatic Weights"
4 - Resetting Pose
Enter Pose Mode: Select the armature and enter pose mode Select Bones: Select all bones (press 'A')
Reset Transformations: Press 'Alt' + 'G' (reset location), 'Alt' + 'R' (reset rotation), and 'Alt' + 'S' (reset scale)
5 - Techniques
Rigify: useful for creating rigs in Blender
Data transfer modifier to copy data (like shape keys or animation data) between objects

Hmm, Having seen the back and forwards i think i know what everyone's trying to point out, but not quite getting across. When i mentioned the pinch like tools i'm really talking about long uniform form breaks.
Organic forms should have form breaks that are incredibly elastic and organic.
I made a quick paint-over to show just how much of a difference this really makes.

Looking closer, here are some points that stood out to me:
- Most notably, I think the tiling of surfaces is a bit too large, other sizes/proportions might benefit from some dialing in as well. What is the dimension of a wall tile currently? I would double check against some real-life references. Would be also cool if you included reference images/ specific location info, to have an idea what you are going for.
- Another aspect to improve, would be more wear/ dirt marking where people frequently go. Currently the wood planks look pretty clean, so does the ground. Perhaps puddles, mud and footprints.
- Makeshift walkways are too loose/ messy and would pose a danger, in my opinion.
- With some surfaces, some subtle variation/ breakup would be nice, also in the roughness to get some more variance in the reflections.
Well that's my, perhaps somewhat nitpicky, thoughts :-B

Thanks for the feedback! That's a great point, I think I could've pushed
that colour variety further for sure - definitely something I'll be
keeping in mind going forward.

@Dabou Master Hey man come on, don't call yourself a failed artist! You need to know that you inspired and guided me a lot on my path so far with your advice and words, and I love to know that to this day you still check this thread, tbh you're the person I expect the most to comment what you think of what I'm doing because you've been coming here for a while, we don't talk much but when we do it's always a good thing, so yes your advice is as valid as any other artists.
But I know your feeling, I think almost everyone (at least the ones that wants to take this seriously) have that dreadful feeling of being a failure, heck I had that feeling a couple hours ago thinking that maybe this is not what I'm supposed to do and I will not get any better.
It's so so hard and complex to create amazing characters, environments.. anything! Specially when we constantly compare ourselves with another artists on Instagram for example. I see so many amazing things there that I'm just gonna say it, it actually makes me sad more than inspired knowing how far behind I am from them.
But even with that constant feeling, we do keep grinding, because we know deep down that we want to achieve that level one day as well.. And I believe we will, it may take longer, but we can get there just like they did.
That orc was rendered in toolbag 5, and I chose a concept that's not that more complex from what I already did, so I think it gets closer to the 10%, when I have something more solid I will post here.
You too stay strong on your path, and remember, you're not alone with those feelings. See you next time!

Hm, when I dropped the lowpoly mesh into Blender to inspect the UVs unfortunately look broken:
Looking at the lowpoly, I suggest:
Attached you find a modified lowpoly, illustrating above points as well as a 1k normal map (OpenGl).
Edit: If you wanted to optimize polycount more, could simplify the top cap, removing the insets from the low poly, having that detail purely in the normal map.
Looking at the lowpoly, I suggest:
- Reduce amount of support loops, use as much as needed to get a good mesh shading. Put the saved geometry into the curvature of rounded/ cylindrical parts. The impact on the assets silhouette is greater.
- To keep an even density and closer match the highpoly, you can fan edges going toward wider curves.
- Straighten UV islands where it make sense, for example strips from tube-like shapes. With a subject like this, UVs shell could be split up into strips and caps. When baking unique normal maps, split UVs at hard edges to avoid artifacts. The issue in your second screenshot could stem from the UVs not being split along hard edges.

Welcome back ! 
Your former skull looked great, the new one looks even better somehow. Probably better point of view from the camera (and greater focal length maybe ?), it's also beautifully lit in my opinion.
Good looking orc too (though I just think the skin texture is a bit oversaturated on some places but I fear it's because of subsurface scattering since you've rendered it on Toolbag ? (which one 3 - 4 - 5 ? Out of curiosity).
I think the best is to be able to maintain a consistent progression, so when not feeling great, staying on little studies, and when feeling like it, going for the bigger project (let's say "medium" project ^^). The best advice I've heard about it is to never go above 10% of unknown technique. (For instance, let's say you make that orc head as your medium project, the 10% bonus would be make better jewelry as those ones are pretty bland for not being the focus of your study. Not a really good analogy but I'm struggling with my english ^^, hope you understand what I meant).
Why am I saying that ? Because depending on your skills and techniques, it's really difficult to give you any advice about that. If you really lack a lot of knowledge about a lot of things in the process of creating a character from start to finish, you probably shouldn't aim for the finish line (yet).
Therefore, you should practice little projects that focus on things you're not used to (unwrapping, retopology, whatever is the thing that's difficult for you) and then try to apply them to a bigger project (so a full character for you). Rinse and repeat I guess, until you get a full fledged character. Or go for the finish line right away, it just depends on how confident you feel about it.
In my experience (of my insufferable amount of life mistakes), the key is to never stay away from one of the steps of creation for too long. Hence you should, at least for a while, stay with medium projects that you can finish quickly enough so that you will have to exploit all of your skills and not just part of it (it erodes pretty quickly) and remembering to add that 10% difficulty on top of it to sharpen them a bit.
Hope that wasn't too unclear (I tend to be incomprehensible), and that's not stupid, as I don't have any legitimacy to give such advice, as a failed artist.
I'm not even able to apply this to myself when I should, I always go for the 50% difficulty at least, so I suck at everything big time ... *sigh*

Game ready 60's office chair
I wanted a chance to practice some leather sculpting and texturing so I created an office chair! It's optimized to be game ready and was modeled/sculpted in Blender, baked in Marmoset and textured using Substance.
