Make sure there are no n-gons in your mesh. If you're using 3ds Max, apply a Turn to Poly modifier to your mesh with Limit Polygon Size set to 4, collapse and re-export.
If the FBX exporter finds n-gons in a mesh it will automatically triangulate the mesh (might behave the same in other 3D applications).

2048 or 4069 are texture resolutions, texel density is pixels per world unit.
The average high end game will support texture resolutions of 4096 or higher, but which resolution makes most sense depends on the asset and use case.
Edit: Of course 2048 or 4096 are ultimately just numbers, so maybe I was the one making a wrong assumption, here. If you meant 2048 or 4096 pixels per e.g. meter, then that once more depends, but seems both fairly high for generic assets.

Looking a lot better to me; maybe the blacks are falling a bit too black in some of the renders, but overall it feels a lot more believable to my eye~

condolences to his family and those who knew him in person.
I noticed original images are no longer hosted, so sharing them as memory. Saved these way back in 2010-2011 when I started learning UDK and switched to game art.

working more on my lioness model. will have to sort the paws out at some point, but am just pleased about being able to paint the textures with polypaint

I like it overall , but I think some of the bevels/gaps need work. lots of really hard edges, which seem little thin. For example the panel gaps look a bit off to me
The lighting will not catch vey well here and might make the render look a little flat. the panel gaps are essential to get right
the gap distance has to be consistent too. Oviously I am being nit picky here, but I think it was worth pointing out
