It occurs to me, that I should've put a firm time limit. It's not like I'm in a hurry, but there are other things I want to try sometime in this lifetime.
With this in mind, I'm wrapping up "blockout" stage. I thought about adding armour, but I'll leave it for later. There enough new things here to learn as it is.

Baking basic lighting information is a fine technique used by many. If you feel it will help then do it.
Bobo used to have a texturing tutorial where he did just that.
Best suggestion would be to look up tutorials on how to paint metals, not swords in particular, then apply the knowledge here. You're off to an acceptable start, though I highly suggest ditching the green runes till you get the metal further along. the contrast in color and saturation pulls the eye, but also dominates and flattens the piece. Perhaps start with the runes inlaid or etched out of the blade, and if you REALLY think it needs it later, then make them glow again.

It's also important to know that Nanite does use Fallback meshes, depending on the platform the original mesh topology and workflow is required. Your tech artists will thank you for maintaining baked workflow. Like others have said, baked workflow is generally always still required because texturing workflow will also likely benefit from them, that said - tri count, as of the last 15 years is nearly always less of a worry.
When nanite isn't used, HLOD, baked workflow, and original principles still apply. Best to account for both.

Lately I've spent not as much time as i would like to on this project. Currently I'm struggling with a tree. I did identify it, and I think I've done it correctly, to my understanding the main tree on the ref is Prunus Salicina (Chinese Plum).
So I've jumped into SpeedTree with no previous experience with the software. And though the software itself isn't seem hard, actually creating a realistic tree takes time. And since I aim to build this environment being game-ready, I struggle even more.
But what brings me back some peace regarding this tough task is looking at references and finding more of them, because this way I can understand the structure more and without it I feel like I'm lost on this track of creating a good-looking tree.
I will attach some of my current attempts including some drawings and atlas placeholder, though they look bad as hell, I think it will be nice to document them there.

I am currently thinking of cutting the scope to just this tree and make it as good as I can, because with the vegetation I don't want to move too fast and thus skip essential and important fundament. My drawing skills are very poor, I actually never draw in my life except for the child paintings like all the kids do, but having a tablet, doing constant Ctrl+Z, utilizing smooth stroke and moving slow really helps.
Currently I'm gathering more references to understand how to incorporate fronds (large branches being replaced with the texture-cluster map) into my tree structure.
Even though you didn't ask for that, I decided that I will make a post. Thanks to you! Otherwise I probably would delay it even more until there would be more to show.

Huh, haven't updated this in a WHILE. I only published one project last year so it seems time to share it again. I spent some time playing about with Unreal's hair strand physics and will continue playing with it this year.
